In a small home meet, a growing Poplar Bluff boys swim team picked up a pair of wins and 54 total points on Tuesday at the Black River Coliseum.

“We scored a lot more points than we have before, which is super exciting,” Mules coach Julia Dragon said. “This year, we met the goal of being able to have a person in every single event and the only thing we missed this time was the 200 relay just because we were short one swimmer (due to an ear infection.)”

After having five swimmers last year, the Mules have eight this year, though were down a swimmer on Tuesday.

“Overall, I’m pretty elated,” Dragon said of Tuesday’s meet. “It’s cool to see them come back and they’re just super pumped and one of them made a comment of, this year’s a lot different. The workouts are a lot tougher. I just wasn’t expecting that. Our program is growing.”

West Plains was the only other school at Tuesday’s meet, and won with 84 points.

Elijah McAtee won the 200-yard individual medley for the Mules in 2 minutes, 43.76 seconds and Christian Todd won the 100 breaststroke in 1:24.51.

John-Paul Godwin and Jack Fortner were both swimming new events for the first time. Godwin swam the 200-freestyle and Fortner swam the 100-backstroke. Godwin took second in 2:35.91 while Fortner finished fourth in 1:27.08.

“(Godwin) was fantastic. And (Fortner) did really good, too,” Dragon said. “Both of them were super nervous about it and they both did really well.”
