Poplar Bluff's Deaton wins race

Poplar Bluff's Jaden Deaton won his race Saturday in the season-opening cross country meet while Alexis Richardson finished in the top 10.
Deaton covered the 2.35-mile course at Jackson City Park in 12 minutes 27 seconds to win the junior race at the Jackson Invitational, which features races for each grade and a shorter distance than a normal 5,000-meter meet.
Richardson finished ninth in the girls junior race in 18:17 while sophomore Salah McCormack had the fastest time among her teammates at 17:31 to finish 23rd. Ava Smith ran 18:56 for 19th in the junior race while Paige Bradley finished 29th in the senior race at 18:57.
Poplar Bluff's freshmen boys were 10th out of 24 teams led by Nathan Mays, who ran the 1.95-mile course in 13:15. Jace Littles finished 44th at 13:51. Owen Sutton (16:18) was 74th, Jack Scott (16:37) was 76th and Kyler Deaton (22:43) was 86th.

Tristan Gilliahn (15:03) finished 27th in the sophomore race for the Mules. Brent Worley (15:15) was 34th among juniors. Aaron Taylor (15:19) finished 43rd in the senior race while Ashten Hayman (16:02) was 52nd and Ross Dare (16:31) was 61st.
The Rockwood Summit tournament featuring Poplar Bluff was postponed by rain Friday and then cancelled Saturday before the Mules took the field.
Poplar Bluff will now open the season Wednesday at North County before traveling Thursday to Sikeston.
