Holcomb baseball team edged Naylor 5-4
NAYLOR , Mo. - The Holcomb Hornets baseball team moved one step closer to the .500 mark with its fifth straight victory Monday afternoon.
Holcomb improved to 7-8 as it outlasted Naylor 5-4.
Holcomb jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Naylor cut the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the first inning before Holcomb padded its lead back to three with two additional runs in the top of the third inning. Naylor added its final two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning but never caught Holcomb.
Elie Morgan finished 2-for-3 with a team-high two RBIs for Holcomb. Ben Maynard also drove home a run for the Hornets.
Seth Jones and Chance Smith each plated a run for Naylor.
Nate Rhew pitched the first 6 1/3 innings for Holcomb. He allowed four unearned runs, five hits, struck out nine, and walked one.
Austin Wallace got the final two outs for the Hornets. He retired both hitters he faced for a two-out save.
Eli Roark pitched the first inning and Chance Smith pitched the final six innings for Naylor (4-10).
No. 6 seeded Holcomb plays No. 3 seeded Campbell in a Class 2, District 1 quarterfinal Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bernie.
