Kennett's Jack McHaney (pictured) earned medalist honors Monday at the Class 2, District 1 golf tournament at Kennett Country Club.

Kennett took home the top prize in Class 2, District 1 with a team score of 346. The first-place score the Indians posted was 48 strokes better than second-place finisher Saxony Lutheran who shot 394 on a windy day.

“Our course is a tough course regardless and the wind didn’t do anybody any favors today,” Kennett coach Jim Vaughan said. “But we shot a good number today. A 346 is close to what we have averaged this season. I think our kids had a good mental grind throughout the round today."

It is the second straight season the Indians have walked away with a district title.

“It feels great to come out and win another district championship,” Kennett golfer Jonathan Jain said. “It is unbelievable to win one at home. We had our family and fans here. It’s great to win in front of your supporters.”

Juniors Jack McHaney and Jain are the returning starters off last season’s Kennett squad that walked away with the Class 3, District 1 title.

“We have a lot of guys that go out daily and work hard,” McHaney said. “I try to lead them as much as I can. I think the more we work together as a team the better our scores will be.”

All five Kennett golfers finished in the Top 5 Monday.

“Our kids put in a ton of time the past week preparing themselves to play this course,” Vaughan said. “I think that was a big reason why we posted good individual scores and a respectable team score today.”

McHaney earned medalist honors with a round of 82 on the par-72 course.

“I knew it was going to be rough today,” McHaney said. “I just tried to avoid making a double or triple bogey.”

Kennett sophomore Joe Wilson earned silver medalist honors. Wilson finished four shots behind McHaney with an 86.

“I feel like I left some shots out there today,” Wilson said. “I didn’t strike the ball well but made up for it with my putting. My putting helped me keep things together.”

Jain finished third with an 87.

“I shot a 39 on the front nine this morning,” Jain said. “But the wind really killed me on the back nine. But we found a way to play good enough to win.”

Kennett junior Hayden Faulkner finished fourth with a 91.

“I played decent overall,” Faulkner said. “I should have played better but it was still a pretty good day.”

Kennett sophomore Will Johnson tied for fifth with Saxony Lutheran’s Matt Babcock. Johnson and Babcock shot 92.

“Conditions were tough,” Johnson said. “My short game could have been a little better but overall I’m happy because we are moving on as a team to the next round.”

The teams finishing first and second in the district qualify for team sectionals. Kennett and Saxony Lutheran will compete in sectional action at Cape Girardeau Country Club Monday.

“It’s an awesome feeling,” Wilson said. “We are really close as a team and it’s awesome to get to move forward with these guys.”

Kennett and Saxony Lutheran will square off against the Top 2 finishers in District 2. Sectional qualifiers from District 2 had yet to be announced at press deadline Monday night.

“We aren’t completely certain about all of the teams in District 2,” Vaughan said. “I do know Willow Springs has had a very solid year. I’m not trying to slight anyone else. We just haven’t had an opportunity to see all of the schools in District 2. I’m not completely sure what we will run across but our goal remains to advance to state as a team. We need to finish in the Top 2 at the sectional to qualify for state so that’s our goal next week.”
