MISSOURIAN ROUNDUP: Jackson wrestlers go four-for-five at Class 4 state meet

The Jackson wrestling team got off to a great start at the Class 4 state championship, with four of the team's five state qualifiers winning their first-round bouts in Columbia, Missouri.

Riley Wiseman was the first victor, beating David H. Hickman's Ethan Barr 6-1 in the 106-pound match. Alec Bailey (120) earned an 8-2 decision over Ozark's Clayton Moison and Garner Horman (145) picked up a 10-5 win over Nixa's Kolyn Eli for the Indians.

It took Braden Vaugier an extra period, but he did enough to earn the 3-1 sudden victory win against Jefferson City's Sam Rackers in the 152-weight class.

Cole Amelunke was the sole Indian to drop his opening-round bout, falling to Park Hill South's Cameron Gillespie.

Cape Girardeau Central junior Josh Pullen was the only other area wrestler to win a first-round bout, pinning Westminster Christian Academy's Patrick Andrews.

The Class 2, 3 and 4 state championships continue today.

Megan Heisserer netted 20 points as the Bulldogs capitalized on a good first-half performance to pick up the win at home over the Class 2 traditional powerhouse Tigers.

Julia Williams provided 11 points for Notre Dame (17-7), which outscored the Tigers by six points in the first half before the second-half stalemate.

Jentri Worley busted a game-high 24 points to pace Neelyville (15-8) in the loss that ended a six-game winning streak for the Tigers.

Senior Leah Cauble made her last appearance as an athlete on the Oran High School gymnasium floor a memorable one, individually outscoring yet another team with a game-high 44 points to lead the Eagles in the lopsided conference romp of the Rams in both squads' last game of the regular season.

Cauble also recorded five steals, four rebounds and four assists for Oran (19-6, 7-0 Scott-Mississippi Conference), which scored three more points in the first quarter than the entire Rams herd mustered the entire game. Junior Kaylee Payne tallied 13 points, eight assists, six steals and four rebounds for the Eagles. Senior Jessie Long added 10 points and six rebounds.

Freshman Kacie Daigger finished with nine points, all from behind the arc, to sustain Scott City (11-13, 1-6).

Jaci Crank recorded a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Eagles in their first-round win over the Eagles from Bethel, Missouri, at the MCSAA State Tournament in Joplin, Missouri.

Olivia Lambert also obtained a double-double with 15 rebounds and 10 points for Eagle Ridge (21-3), which flew out to a 25-point lead heading into the final quarter.

Keely Breininger finished with 21 points for Heartland Christian Academy & Boarding School.

Eagle Ridge continues its quest for another state title at 7 p.m. today against Providence Classical Christian Academy from St. Louis.

Chauncey Hughes drained a game-high 20 points as the Tigers fended off a second-half comeback scare to escape with a close win over the Panthers on the road in the suburban St. Louis area.

Kinyon Hodges pitched in 17 points for Cape Girardeau Central (21-3), which sat on an 18-point cushion at halftime. Doreante Tucker added 12 points as the Tigers were outscored by 13 points in the second half to ultimately survive by five points.

Lamontay Daughtery sank 18 points to pace Mehlville (19-7) in the loss.

Zach LeGrand busted a game-high 30 points, including six 3-pointers, as the BlueJays scored five more points in the first quarter than the Tigers could compile throughout the whole game in the conference road rout.

Drew Glueck tossed in 16 points for Oak Ridge (18-7, 5-1 Mississippi Valley Conference), which posted a massive 49-point lead at halftime. Tanner Schamburg notched a triple-double with 12 points, 10 assists and 15 steals, breaking the school record of 12 steals that was held collectively by four former players, including David Layton, who did not play in the BlueJays' cakewalk.

Coy Bailey scored 13 points for Marquand-Zion (0-22, 0-6), which wrapped up its regular season winless.

Alex Brickhaus pitched in 17 points, all but two of which came from behind the arc, for St. Vincent (16-7). Garrett Dobbelare tallied 10 points and nine assists for the Indians while Shawn Koishoir notched 10 rebounds and eight points.

Michael Roth led all scorers with 21 points but it was ultimately not enough as the sixth-seeded Eagles fell to the top-seeded Eagles from Garden City, Mo., in the first round of the MCSAA State Tournament in Joplin, Missouri.

Logan Schwieger added seven points for Eagle Ridge (2-21), which will be back in action at 5:30 p.m. today against fourth-seeded Show-Me Christian School from St. Joseph.

Dalton Heman and Kellon Roach netted 20 points apiece to lead Training Center Christian School (16-4).

Class 2 State Championships

Jackson senior Faith Littleton posted a fifth-place time of 5 minutes, 9.68 seconds in the 500 freestyle to advance to today's finals at the Class 2 MSHSAA Girls Swimming State Tournament at the Rec Plex in St. Peters, Missouri.

Littleton also booked her spot in the 200 freestyle finals with a seventh-place time of 1 minute, 58.23 seconds. She was also a member of Jackson's 200 medley relay team, which missed the cut with a 30th-place finish time of 2 minutes, 1.70 seconds. Joining her in the effort were teammates Madelyn Harris, Dawson Tally and Marissa Pemberton. Littleton, Pemberton and Tally were also a part of the 400 freestyle relay, along with Cami Brazel, who failed to advance to today's finals with a 29th-place time of 3 minutes, 59.62 seconds.
