MISSOURIAN ROUNDUP: Advance boys basketball pushes past Bloomfield to the SCAA semifinals

The Advance boys basketball team pulled away late in the fourth quarter to secure a tightly contested 66-59 victory over host Bloomfield on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the SCAA Conference Tournament.

Third-seeded Advance (8-9) had a balanced attack plan, as four Hornets scored in double digits.

Seth Whittley (19) and Wes Shelby (18) led the way, while Jack Below contributed 12 points and Hunter Curtis netted 10 points of his own. Zach Simms only scored two points before fouling out.

Sixth-seeded Bloomfield had a strong effort by Travis McCullough, who paced the Wildcats (4-13) with a game-high 26 points. Malik Williams helped out with 14 points in the loss.

Both teams found success at the free-throw line as Bloomfield went 10-of-12 and Advance went 11-of-13 from the charity stripe.

Advance moves into the semifinals where they will face second-seeded Bernie at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

On the top half of the bracket, top-seeded Dexter easily disposed of eighth-seeded Bell City 86-29.

Jack Duenne paced the winless Cubs (0-16) with 12 points as the Bearcats maintained a 48-14 lead at halftime before a running clock ensued in the final quarter.

Nate Gargas bucketed a game-high 16 points for Dexter (10-6), who will meet fourth-seeded Richland (Essex) at 7 p.m. Thursday in the other semifinal. The third-place game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Friday with the championship match slated to begin at 8:30 p.m.

Cape Central 70, Perryville 30

Doreante' Tucker led Cape Girardeau Central to a dominant victory over the Pirates by sinking 21 points for the Tigers.

The Tigers hit 29 field goals in the win as four players scored in double digits. Kinyon Hodges (12), Chauncey Hughes (11) and Tyrus Reddin (10) aided Tucker in the effort.

Perryville (10-8) was paced by Chase Brown, who netted 12 points in the loss. No other Pirate scored in double digits.

The Tigers outscored the Pirates in every quarter and went into halftime with a 41-15 lead.

Cape Central (12-2) will host SEMO Conference nemesis Poplar Bluff on Friday.

Thomas Crippen supplied plenty of assistance to the Bulldogs as he chipped in 22 points in Notre Dame's victory over the Rebels.

Notre Dame (7-9) hit 32 field goals to ensure the lopsided victory.

Kam Dohogne aided Crippen in the effort by chipping in 13 points. The duo led the way for Notre Dame as 11 Bulldogs scored.

Central (8-9) had an unbalanced scoring effort as Breven McMullen netted 14 of the team's 30 points.

The Rebels did have a bright spot, as the team hit 90 percent of its shots from the charity stripe.

Notre Dame had less success, going 2 of 6 from the free-throw line.

Gavin Jansen poured in a game-high 18 points to help lead the Hawks to the win at home over the Crusaders.

Jay Noon contributed 13 points for Kelly (7-9), which flew out to a nine-point lead at halftime. Drew Dirnberger pitched in 12 points as the Hawks outscored the Crusaders by 12 points in the second half en route to victory.

Andrew Schwarting finished with 11 points to pace Saxony Lutheran (2-16) in its eighth-straight loss.

The Eagles had a dominant first quarter and took a 16-2 advantage in the opening period in the blowout road win over the Hawks in the suburban St. Louis area.

Jaci Crank nailed three 3-pointers on her way to scoring a game-high 15 points for Eagle Ridge (14-2). Rachel Margrabe netted 11 points and Olivia Lambert tossed in 10 points for the Eagles on their way to victory.

Katie Heckel paced Heritage Classical Christian Academy (2-13) with eight points.

Jackson's hot-shooting second half ultimately put the game out of reach as the second-seeded Indians toppled the seventh-seeded Phoenix in the opening round of the Lindbergh Lady Flyers Invitational Tournament in St. Louis.

The Indians came out of the locker room with a fury and outscored the Phoenix 26-13.

Kalli Mayfield led the way for Jackson (12-2) with 16 points. Jordyn McClellan sank 11 points and Mik Liley chipped in 14 points for the Indians.

Antuanae Garrett finished with a game-high 18 points to sustain Miller Career Academy (10-6) in the loss.

With its win, Jackson advances to the semifinals where they will meet third-seeded Mary Institute & St. Louis Country Day School (MICDS) at 7 p.m. tonight. The Rams (10-7) avoided an upset in their 48-47 quarterfinal squeaker over sixth-seeded Francis Howell.
