HOLCOMB, Mo. - The Holcomb Hornets girls basketball program is trying to keep things simple in Year 2 after relaunching its girls basketball program at the high school level last season.

“This summer we focussed completely on fundamentals,” Holcomb first-year girls basketball coach Alexa Stockton said. “We are going back to the basics and starting from scratch. We recreated everyone’s shot over the summer, which has helped our offense quite a bit. We want to be a fundamental team when we take the court.”

Holcomb has two seniors, three juniors, four sophomores, and four freshmen out for girls basketball. Most of its starters saw playing time on varsity last season.

“We’ve got a lot of girls that played last year,” Stockton said. “We will be able to at least play two quarters of a junior varsity game and a full varsity game this year. Most of our underclassmen will play six quarters a night.”

Holcomb, which competes in the Tri-County Conference in other sports, will once again compete in the Bootheel Conference in girls basketball because no other Tri-County schools offer girls basketball.

“The Bootheel Conference will be tough for us because we are one of the smallest schools in it,” Stockton said. “But hopefully we can compete in it.”

Holcomb opened its season Nov. 22 at Twin Rivers.

Holcomb is also scheduled to compete in the South Pemiscot Tournament Nov. 26-30.

“I get to go back home for our first game,” Stockton, who is a Twin Rivers graduate, said. “It will be a good opportunity for us to get some experience before we go to the South Pemiscot Tournament.”
