Jackson boys soccer drops quarterfinal match to De Smet, 1-0

Despite a spirited effort, Jackson boys soccer will have to wait another year to end its quarterfinal drought.

The Indians fell 1-0 to DeSmet in a Class 4 sectional on Tuesday in St. Louis.

A second-half goal from Matt Russo doomed Jackson (18-5-2) to a third consecutive defeat at the sectional round. Logan Payne got the shutout for DeSmet.

The two teams had met weeks earlier in the Indians' regular-season finale. The Spartans (20-3-2) won that game 3-1.

Jackson can take solace in the fact it claimed its third district title this season. The Indians' first quarterfinal berth since 2010 proved just out of their reach.

No further information was provided.
