Dexter football upsets Ste. Genevieve in triple overtime thriller
STE. GENEVIEVE, Mo. — The Dexter Bearcats avenged a Week 1 loss and kept their season alive, upsetting Ste. Genevieve 25-19 in a triple overtime thriller in a first round Class 3, District 1 playoff game Friday night.
Sixth-seeded Dexter, who won their first district playoff game since 2010, earned the win after stopping third-seeded Ste. Genevieve to open the third overtime. Then senior running back Caleb Hoggard bolted through the Dragon defense on Dexter’s second offensive play for a 24-yard touchdown giving the Bearcats the win.
Ste. Genevieve (7-3) had two chances to win the game, but point after attempts were no good. The first came in the fourth quarter when the Dragons tied the Bearcats at 13-13 with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Logan Gegg to Grant Steffen with 7:30 left to play. The Dragons missed the point after attempt and neither team was able to score to close out regulation.
The two teams held each other scoreless in the first overtime and then after Dexter took the lead in the second overtime with a 2-yard from Corbin Strong, the Bearcats point after attempt was blocked, leaving the door open for the Dragons.
Ste. Genevieve, facing a fourth-and-goal from the nine, tied the game when receiver Devon Bader leaped over a Bearcat defender to catch a touchdown pass from Gegg. The point after attempt sailed wide right and Dexter took advantage by earning the win the third overtime.
Dexter (5-4) started the scoring in the first quarter when quarterback Haden Hillis hit Seth Rodgers for a 4-yard touchdown pass. Strong gave Dexter a 13-0 lead in the third quarter on a 31-yard run.
Ste. Genevieve answered on the next play from scrimmage as Gegg hit Bader for a 65-yard scoring pass, cutting the Dexter lead to 13-7.
Dexter rushed for 319 yards in the game as Stong finished with 176 yards on 29 carries while Hoggard added 121 yards on 20 carries.
The Bearcats will travel to Park Hills Central next week for a district semifinal game. Dexter defeated the Rebels 13-7 in Week 8.
