Southeast Missouri State volleyball captures five-set win in final prep for OVC play
The Southeast Missouri State volleyball team picked up its second five-set victory in two nights in the state of Illinois, nipping Northern Illinois by two points in the deciding set in DeKalb.
The Redhawks won 25-16, 25-22, 21-25, 21-25, 16-14 in its final non-conference match before the start of Ohio Valley Conference play.
After rallying from two sets down, the Huskies had a match point on the Redhawks at 14-13 in the fifth set but squandered the chance with a service error.
Another Northern Illinois miscue then gave Southeast a match point, and sophomore Ally Dion finished off the Huskies with a service ace.
Sophomore Laney Malloy led Southeast both on offense and defense with 16 kills and 19 digs. Madara Bajare recorded 13 kills and Haley Bilbruck had 12.
Claire Ochs and Dion each finished with 17 digs.
Ochs, a freshman, also had a team-high three aces and 48 assists. Krista Berns turned in six blocks, while Maggie Adams and Bilbruck each had five. The Redhawks held a 13-8 edge in blocks in the match.
Meg Wolowicz posted a match-high 22 kills for Northern Illinois.
Southeast had a .204 attack percentage for the match to .118 for the Northern Illinois.
The Redhawks improved to 8-5 on the season, while Northern Illinois fell to 2-10.
Southeast opens OVC play at 6:30 p.m. Friday when it hosts Austin Peay at Houck Field House.
