Southeast Missouri State volleyball's Malloy named OVC Newcomer of the Week
Southeast Missouri State volleyball's Laney Malloy was named Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Monday.
A sophomore outside hitter, Malloy tallied 63 kills, 39 digs and five blocks in four games this past week and produced a team-high 68.5 points. She's the first Redhawk to win an OVC weekly award since Jade Mortimer was Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 7, 2016.
"This is a well-deserved honor for Laney," SEMO coach Julie Yankus said in a news release. "She came through for us in all aspects of the game this past week. She is passing half of the court in serve receive. She is playing some great defense, and she is terminating efficiently in the front row. We played back-to-back matches on Saturday and after a tough five-set loss against Providence, she responded immediately with an amazing performance against [University of Missouri-Kansas City]. I'm very proud of her mental and physical toughness this weekend."
This weekend at the Kangaroo Classic in Kansas City, Missouri, Malloy averaged 19.3 kills per match over three games and made the all-tournament team.
The Illinois-Chicago transfer had a double-double in back-to-back games. She had 17 kills and 16 digs against Arkansas State in Friday's tournament opener and then a career-high 22 kills plus 11 digs against Providence on Saturday. In the final tournament game, she produced 19 kills on a .405 hitting percentage against UMKC.
Malloy is sixth in the conference with 3.18 kills per set for a total of 124.
Southeast returns to the court at 7 p.m. Tuesday against host Western Illinois as SEMO looks to snap a three-game losing streak. The Redhawks conclude their non-conference slate the next day with a road match versus Northern Illinois.
