Southeast Missouri State volleyball team extends winning streak before suffering first loss of season
The Southeast Missouri State volleyball team saw its impressive start to the season stopped, but not before extending its set victory streak to 15.
After sweeping Louisiana Monroe in the afternoon, the Redhawks (5-1) finally tasted defeat in 2018, falling to Radford 25-23, 25-17 and 25-11.
Still, the program matched its best start to a campaign since 1986.
The Redhawks continued their winning streak with an afternoon sweep of Louisiana-Monroe, 25-18, 25-23 and 25-18.
SEMO led the whole way in the opening game, but then had to fight off the Warhawks (2-2) in set No. 2, tied as late as 18-all before Southeast held on.
Southeast then finished ULM off by taking 10 out of a possible 12 points during a mid-set swing in the third game to take the lead for good and secure its 18th consecutive set victory.
SEMO hit at a .340 clip in the match with 52 kills, paced by Laney Malloy's 16 kills and Madara Bajare's 15. Claire Ochs had 40 assists and eight digs.
Against Radford, the Redhawks rallied from an early deficit to knot the first game at 20-20, but couldn't maintain momentum and dropped a set for the first time this year.
Southeast was never able to push Radford the rest of the way.
Bajare led all players with 12 kills in the match and Ochs added 23 assists and nine digs.
SEMO hit at only a .170 clip and had 17 attacking errors.
The Redhawks are back on the court Saturday, capping off the Redhawk Invitational against Northwestern State at 2 p.m. at Houck Field House.
