MISSOURIAN ROUNDUP: Scott City softball remains unbeaten

The Scott City softball team continued its perfect season and came away with two wins in the opening round of pool play to reach today's Gold Bracket in the inaugural Old Settlement Frontier Days Invitational Tournament on Friday in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri.

The Rams trounced host Valle Catholic 14-3 in five innings in their first game and then rolled to a 5-1 win over Potosi.

Kaileigh Dirden got the win in the circle during both games for Scott City, which improved to 12-0. She got the complete-game win over the Trojans, surrendering one earned run and recording 11 strikeouts while going three innings against the Warriors giving up no runs on two hits with five strikeouts. She also had a triple, a double and four RBIs for the Rams in their win over Valle.

Rylee Venable had a double, a triple and two RBIs for the Rams in their two wins.

Potosi (8-2) blanked Valle (12-7) 4-0 in the last game of pool play.

Scott City will go up against Park Hills Central at 12:30 p.m. today in the Gold Bracket semifinals. The Rebels (13-3) fell to the Rams 4-1 in the teams' only other encounter thus far this season.

Elsewhere in the tournament, the Oran softball team also picked up a pair of victories in a 6-5 win over host Ste. Genevieve and an 11-0 shutout of Arcadia Valley to also make it to the Gold Bracket.

Alyssa Spane was the winning pitcher for the Eagles in both games, going the distance while giving up three earned runs with two strikeouts and one walk in the slim win over the Dragons and needing one inning to get the win against the Tigers.

Leah Cauble had a home run, a double and two RBIs to lead Oran in its win over Ste. Genevieve and another double in its trouncing of Arcadia Valley. Claire Ramsey also doubled and added three RBIs for the Eagles in Game 2.

Ste. Genevieve (10-7) defeated Arcadia Valley (2-17) 15-0 in three innings in the subsequent pool-play game.

Oran (10-1) will open Gold Bracket action at 11 a.m. today against Malden.

Britni Zajicek smacked a double and drove in three runs but it was not enough as the Cardinals fell to the Bears on the road.

Madison Cover tossed 2 1/3 innings to endure the loss for Woodland (7-8). She allowed five runs (one earned) on two hits, walked two batters and had no strikeouts.

Kelsie Long added a double and two RBIs for the Cardinals.

Jaden Francis pitched a whole game to catch the win for Greenville (5-6).

Tristin Porter doubled twice and chipped in two RBIs to pace the Bears at the plate.

Brayden Eftink smacked a double and scored two runs as the Bulldogs used a solid third inning to gather a big five-inning win over the Warriors in the first game of the 7th Annual Notre Dame Showcase.

Will Ferrell pitched a full game to earn the win for Notre Dame (10-4). He recorded six strikeouts and three walks.

Nolan Schwent lasted 2 2/3 innings on the mound to suffer the loss for Valle Catholic (13-4).

The loss ended a six-game winning streak for the Warriors.

Jonathon Tyler pitched six innings to suffer the loss for Kelly (7-7, 2-3). He allowed 10 runs (three earned) on 10 hits and recorded six strikeouts and three walks.

D.J. Lynch shot a five-over-par 40 to place second individually as the Bulldogs edged the Bearcats by three strokes to come away with the win at the Cape Girardeau Country Club.

Spencer Warren carded a three-over-par 38 to earn the medalist honors for Dexter.

Alex Burger dished out 21 assists for Notre Dame (7-7). Tanner Peters notched 10 digs to pace the Bulldogs defensively.

Fort Zumwalt North dropped to 3-14 with the loss.

GIRLS SOCCER

Marquette 2, Jackson 1 (OT)

Ashley Hansen and Allison Sher each netted the goals as the Mustangs downed the Indians in overtime in the first round of the Capital City Shootout at Jefferson City, Missouri.

Goalkeeper Tabby Cacheris snagged 12 saves for Marquette (6-7).

Lauren Welker scored the lone goal for Jackson (9-3), and Taylor Nelson provided the assist.

The Indians resume action against Hillsboro at 11 a.m. Saturday.
