SEMO ROUNDUP: Cape Central product grabs win to lead Southeast Missouri State track and field

Former Cape Girardeau Central standout Chris Martin took home a first-place finish to lead Southeast Missouri State track and field as it competed at the Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays at Mississippi State in Starkville, Mississippi.

Martin took the stop spot in the men’s triple jump, posting a mark of 51 feet, 4 1/4 inches in the final round of the event, setting a new season best. That distance currently sits third in the regional rankings.

Griffin Bailey was also a winner for the Redhawks, taking the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:30.40.

Marc Maton landed in second in the 1500-meter run with a 3:49.91 for SEMO.

Logan Blomquist earned a pair of third-place results in throwing events, throwing a 185-9.50 in the hammer throw and a 54-8.25 in the shot put.

Fellow Redhawks Jonathan Engelking and Tanner Teigen grabbed fourth-place finishes in the javelin and pole vault, respectively.

For the Southeast women, a quartet of competitors landed in fourth in their respective events to pace the quad.

Madison McPeak reached a personal best mark of 11-5.75 in the pole vault, while, on the track, Kendall Long ran 1:02.48 in the 400 hurdles. Jezel Martin finished the 200-meter dash in 24.43 seconds — the seventh-best time in the region this season — and Angie Summer went through the 3000 steeplechase in 11:35.61.

SEMO is back in action hosting the Drury Hotels Joey Haines Invite on Friday and Saturday at the Abe Stuber Track and Field Complex.

The Redhawks could not maintain momentum from a Friday win, as they fell to Belmont 5-2 on Saturday at the indoor Ensworth High School Tennis Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

Southeast (4-8 overall, 1-2 Ohio Valley Conference) earned singles victories from Kseniya Zonova and Maja Lundell vs. the Bruins (5-11, 1-3).

Zonova won a second straight singles matchup as she dropped Belmont’s Drew Hankings 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 2 battle.

Lundell snapped a personal four-match losing streak to snag her second win of the season, dropping Nikki Christiansen 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 6 spot.

The rest of the singles matches went to three sets, but Southeast came out on the wrong end, including a defeat for Oleksandra Doroshenko to end her five-match winning streak.

The Redhawks will host a pair of conference meetings next weekend, taking on Austin Peay at 2 p.m. Friday and Murray State at noon Saturday at the Redhawks Tennis Complex.
