Cardinals get ninth-inning win over Washington, lose Gregerson

Luke Gregerson

The St. Louis Cardinals found some offense late, scoring two runs in the eighth and then getting the go-ahead score in the bottom of the ninth to edge the Washington Nationals 4-3 in an exhibition game Wednesday in Jupiter, Florida.

The win pushed the Cardinals to 5-6 in spring training.

Greg Garcia got the start at third base for St. Louis, going 2-for-3 with a two-out solo home run off Washington starting pitcher Max Scherzer in the second inning.

Former first-round draft pick Patrick Wisdom was 1-for-4 with a double while playing first and third base.

Adam Wainwright got the start on the hill for St. Louis, allowing just one run on three hits in 3 2/3 innings of work with four strikeouts and two walks.

Connor Greene got credit for a blown save after the Cards took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't hold it, as the Nationals tied things up in the top of the ninth.

Matt Bowman earned the pitching win with 1 1/3 innings of work.

Scherzer allowed just one run on one hit with four strikeouts and a walk in four innings.

The Cardinals face Miami today at 12:05 p.m. in Jupiter.

Gregerson injury

St. Louis closer Luke Gregerson is expected to be sidelined for at least several days with tightness in his oblique.

Gregerson signed an $11 million, two-year contract. The 33-year-old right-hander has appeared in one exhibition game, striking out two in a hitless inning Saturday.

Gregerson first began feeling the tightness in the days that followed that appearance. He was scheduled to throw again on Monday but instead met with the trainers.
