Southeast Missouri State softball goes 1-3 in competitive Kentucky John Cropp Classic

The Southeast Missouri State softball team wrapped up action at the Kentucky John Cropp Classic on Sunday with a pair of losses in Lexington, Kentucky.

The Redhawks fell to Ohio and No. 22 Kentucky 5-1 and 11-2, respectively, to go 1-3 at the two-day event.

In the first contest, the Bobcats did their damage with two outs, getting three two-out hits in the third inning, capped by a two-run single by Katie Yun to take a 2-0 edge.

Ohio then got a two-out, three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to go up 5-0.

Southeast (8-7) got on the board thanks to an RBI double by Darby Pruett in the top of the seventh.

Haley Thogmartin (1-3) took the pitching loss for SEMO, giving up two runs on six hits with two strikeouts and a walk in three innings of work.

The Redhawks stranded 12 base runners -- going 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position -- but got a bright performance from Mykaela Arellanes, who was 2-for-3.

The top-25 Wildcats simply powered through Southeast in the second game, hitting three home runs, including three-run blasts by Abbey Cheek and Mallory Peyton.

Southeast kept hope alive early on when Sarah Messex rapped a two-run triple to cut the gap to 3-2 in the third inning, but Kentucky pulled away after that.

Madeline Krumrey suffered the loss in the pitcher's circle vs. the Wildcats, giving up seven runs on eight hits with two walks and a strikeout in four innings.

Ashley Ellis had a pair of hits for the Redhawks.

Saturday's action

SEMO split a pair of games on the Classic's first day, defeating Ohio 2-1 before falling to Kentucky 4-2.

It was a complete-game victory for Krumrey in the opener, as she allowed just one run on five hits. It was the 32nd complete game of her career.

Southeast scored on a sacrifice fly by Abby Tillotson in the third inning and a solo homo run by Addison Barnouski in the bottom of the sixth.

Things got dicey for the Redhawks in the top of the seventh, as Ohio loaded the bases and pushed one run in on a hit batter, but Krumrey worked out of the jam to preserve the win.

In the nightcap, Southeast built a 2-0 lead on the host Wildcats thanks to an RBI hit by Tillotson and a home run by Ellis, but Kentucky responded, tying things at 2-all in the fourth inning and then adding runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Arellanes was 2-for-2 with a run scored and two walks for SEMO. Thogmartin took the loss in relief, allowing two runs on four hits with a strikeout.

Next up for the Redhawks is a three-game series at Creighton, starting with a noon doubleheader Friday in Omaha, Nebraska.
