Malden’s Lana Reed (pictured) scored a game-high 16 points during the Lady Green Wave’s 58-37 victory over South Pemiscot Thursday night.

The win came in the second of a five-game home stretch for the Lady Green Wave, serving as a boost ahead of upcoming Bootheel Conference clashes before tournament play begins.

“We’ve had a nice couple of weeks,” said Malden coach Josh Herring after the game, “And it really shows when you play tough teams early in the year. Those tough teams just make you better.”

Malden darted out to a 17-9 lead in the first quarter, which was capped off by a three-pointer at the buzzer by Lana Reed, who went on to score a game-high 16-points. Reed was helped offensively by 11 points from Alyexus Lashay, 10 points from Jada Criglar and nine points by Madison Saulsbery.

“They played a really good ball game,” Herring added. “It was slow, but they really handled everything tonight. I was really impressed with my bench tonight. They really stepped up tonight and were able to be more composed and solid.”

South Pemiscot fought throughout the second quarter and early in the third quarter. Lakeyia Brown scored 12 points — a team high — while Aliya Taylor scored eight. Still, Malden’s strength in depth helped the Lady Green Wave extend their lead later in the game.

Now, the Lady Wave look forward to two more Bootheel Conference home games. First, they’ll host Caruthersville on Tuesday, Jan. 16 before hosting Portageville Jan. 18.

“They can play,” Herring said of Portageville, “And we’re going to have to step up our game to be able to win against them. Kellye (Fowler) does a great job with that program. That’s a good, competitive program, and if we’re going to beat them, we’ve got to step up our game a little bit.”

South Pemiscot is back in action Tuesday when it hosts Hayti.
