Poplar Bluff girls fall in final to host at Mustang Classic

HOXIE, Ark. -- The defending Arkansas 3A state champs used a second-quarter run to shake the Poplar Bluff girls basketball team Saturday night in the championship game of the Mustang Classic.

Hoxie outscored the Mules 12-4 after the teams played even through the first eight minutes to win their own eight-team tournament 61-37.

"I thought we guarded them well early but just struggled to make shots," Mules coach John David Pattillo said.

Doni Everts scored a team-high 16 points and was named to the all-tournament team along with Kiley Bess, who had the only points in the second quarter among her 14 points. Shelby Sievers scored four points, all in the fourth quarter, while Katie Pattillo (2 points) and Hannah Corcimiglia (1) were the only other Mules to score.

Poplar Bluff (8-4), had a season-high four-game winning streak snapped, was outscored 29-11 in the middle quarters.

Hoxie (10-6) was led by 18 points from Kaitlin Henson and Sydney Gillham. The Mustangs sank 24 of 27 foul shots while Poplar Bluff was 6 for 6 at the line.

"When we tried to press late the game got away from us," Coach Pattillo said. "Hopefully we are getting better and healthier for our conference season coming up."

The Mules travel Thursday to Cape Central to open SEMO Conference play.
