Top seeds at Lady Royals Christmas Classic open with tune-ups

2017 LADY ROYALS CHRISTMAS CLASSIC BRACKET

BROSELEY, Mo. -- The top two seeds in the Lady Royals Christmas Classic used their first-round matchup to fine-tune their fundamentals Saturday.

Top-seeded Dexter welcomed back all-stater Chaylea Mosby in a 104-21 rout of No. 16 East Carter, and second-seeded Neelyville worked on all aspects of its game in a 76-21 win over No. 15 Campbell.

The Bearcats will meet Kennett in the championship quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Ninth-seeded Kennett beat No. 8 Portageville 43-34 Saturday morning.

Neelyville will face Doniphan at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Mosby, who missed three games because of a minor head injury, erupted for 33 points for the Bearcats who improved to 7-2.

The junior also missed more than two weeks of practice before being cleared to play Friday.

"It killed me not being able to go out and help my team," Mosby said. "So it's really great to be back."

Mosby's return made the team around her better.

"(She) and Hannah (Thurmon) really worked well together today in the game," Dexter coach Chad Allen said. "I thought they both looked really good and looked for each other. They played great together."

Thurmon finished with 17 points.

Maycie Martin scored nine of her 15 points in the first quarter, and the Bearcats closed the period with a 20-0 run to take a 31-4 lead into the second.

Mosby scored 15 second-quarter points, including two 3-pointers, to extend Dexter's lead to 61-14 by halftime.

Natalie Sitze scored all of her 10 points in the third quarter, and the Bearcats' lead grew to 87-17.

Rylee Allen was the fifth Bearcat to score in double figures with 10 points.

Makenna Moore paced East Carter with nine points.

Neelyville coach Becky Hale said that her team worked on a number of things in the win such as "staying intense, blocking out, rebounding, taking care of the ball (and) making good decisions."

The Tigers scored the majority of their first-quarter points off turnovers or second-chance opportunities.

Autumn Dodd scored 12 of her game-high 28 points in the first quarter. In one stretch, she scored 10 straight points to give the Tigers a 20-2 lead with 4:24 to go in the period. She made two of her six 3-pointers during her run.

J'Kayla Fowler scored 10 of her 14 points in the opening quarter, and Jentri Worley tallied seven of her 16 as the Tigers took a 36-4 lead into the second quarter.

Neelyville led 51-10 at halftime and 64-13 after three quarters.

Claire Parker paced Campbell with 10 points.

CHAFFEE 61, CLEARWATER 39

The No. 12 seeded Tigers came out hot and gave fifth-seeded Chaffee a stiff challenge early.

Halle Gooch scored eight of her 10 points in the first quarter as the Tigers stayed close.

Rachel Rowold opened the scoring with a pair of putbacks, giving Clearwater a 4-0 lead. Mattison Cline's 3-pointer gave the Red Devils their first lead at 9-8 with a 3-pointer. She finished with 10 points.

The teams were tied at 16-all with less than 2 minutes to play before Chaffee went on a 13-0 run.

Madeline Hendrix's jumper and Kylie Wilhite's driving layup gave the Red Devils a 20-16 lead after one quarter.

Wilhite scored seven of her 14 points in the first quarter.

Chaffee's lead grew to 29-16 before Grace Peppers' free throw with 3:12 remaining in the quarter snapped the run.

The Red Devils scored the final five points of the quarter to lead 34-17 at halftime. Their lead could have been larger at the break, but they made only 6 of 14 free throws.

The Tigers climbed to within 10 points in the third behind a 9-0 run capped by a 3-pointer by Cheyenne Burton that cut Chaffee's lead to 38-28.

Chaffee closed the quarter with an 11-0 run to take a commanding 49-28 advantage into the fourth.

Katie Glueck scored nine of her game-high 15 points in the third for the Red Devils, who extended their lead to as many as 27 points in the fourth.

KENNETT 43, PORTAGEVILLE 34

The ninth-seeded Kennett Indians overcame a slow start to beat eighth-seeded Portageville.

Portageville took a 7-1 lead in a low-scoring first quarter, but the Indians rallied to tie score at 7 on a steal and a layup by Dekayla Duckworth near the end of the quarter.

Dasmine Johnson and Zarria Taylor opened the second quarter with a putback each for Portageville, but the Indians closed the half with an 11-0 run capped by a 3-pointer by Duckworth. Duckworth's fast-break basket gave the Indians their first lead of the game (13-11), and they never trailed again.

Kennett led 18-11 at halfime and 33-23 after three quarters.

Duckworth finished with a game-high 17 points. Kayton Harris added 12.

Selinah Taylor paced Portageville with nine points.
