Girls Basketball Preview: Campbell looks to increase win total
The Campbell Camels varsity girls basketball program enters the 2017-18 season with one returning starter off of last season’s squad that finished 4-19.
Guard Madison Burns in the lone returning starter and only senior on a roster that also features four juniors, three sophomores and three freshmen.
“This squad plays hard and they are physical,” Campbell coach Chelsea Bledsoe said. “They don’t mind to dive on the floor and bang around.”
Campbell hosts Greenville in its home opener Dec. 4.
The Camels will compete in the Bootheel Conference with defending champion Malden, last year’s runner-up Portageville, a first-year Holcomb program, Hayti, Caruthersville, Senath-Hornersville and South Pemiscot.
“There is a lot of talent in the Bootheel Conference,” Bledsoe said. “We are young and just going to take it one game at a time and see what happens.”
Campbell will compete in Class 2, District 1 at Bernie with defending champion Puxico, Senath-Hornersville, Holcomb, Bloomfield, South Pemiscot and Hayti at the end of the season.
“Just like the Bootheel Conference it’s a tough bracket to fall into and we are going to do our best to compete and see what happens,” Bledsoe said. “There are a lot of teams returning players. We are young but excited and can’t wait to see what this year has in store for us.”
