SD ROUNDUP: NMCC holds off SCC for Pre-Turkey Classic title

CHARLESTON, Mo. – Three players scored in double figures for the Scott County Central Bravettes basketball team, but it wasn't enough to hold off third-seeded New Madrid County Central in the finale of the Pre-Turkey Classic.

The Eagles (3-0) outpaced SCC 19-14 in the fourth quarter to get by the fourth seed 64-56 to claim a championship in the second annual tournament at Charleston High School.

Scott Central (2-1) was led by Samantha Coffee's 16 points and 10 rebounds. It's the second double-double for the sophomore, who's averaging 15 points and 11 boards in the first three games.

Hailey Kesler added 12 points and five assists, while Trinity Thomas chipped in 10 points and two steals.

The Bravettes will host Oran tonight at 6 p.m., while NMCC is off until Nov. 27, when they travel to Hayti.

MALDEN, Mo. (SMNS) – The Eagles picked up right where they left off a year ago, as they rolled to a dominating season-opening win over the Green Wave.

Leah Cauble led all scorers with 32 points along with five rebounds and six steals, while Jessie Long added 18 points and five rebounds for Oran (1-0). Kaylee Payne contributed 13 points, four assists and four steals in the win.

The Eagles scored 81 points without hitting a 3-pointer, going 0 of 5 from long range. They out-rebounded Malden (0-1) 20-5.

Junior High Basketball

SIKESTON -- The Sikeston seventh and eighth grade basketball teams split with Jackson on Monday at the Sikeston Junior High.

The Sikeston seventh graders won 45-37 while the Sikeston eighth grade team lost 51-46.

Sikeston's seventh graders improved to 3-1 on the season while the eighth grade team fell to 2-2. Both teams will be in action next Monday at Jackson.
