Notre Dame girls golf standout Sarah Bell in control after opening round of Class 1 tourney

Sarah Bell is well on the way toward defending her state title.

The senior on the Notre Dame girls golf team carded a 2-under par 69 on Monday, opening up a five-stroke lead over teammate Allison Bray in the Class 1 state tournament at Columbia Country Club in Columbia, Missouri.

Bray, also a senior, shot a 74 and is currently tied in second place with Pembroke Hill's India Gaume.

In the team standings, the Bulldogs have a comfortable first-place lead after finishing the opening round with a team score of 319. Pembroke Hill (355) is in second place, followed by John Burroughs (358) in third.

Notre Dame sophomore Taryn Overstreet fired an 83 and is tied for fifth place.

Olvia Williams shot a 93, while Haley Taylor carded a 94 to round out the Bulldogs' team scores.

The second round will begin at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, with Bell scheduled to tee off at 10:09 a.m.
