Football capsule: Kennett vs. Greene County Tech (district standings included)

The Kennett Indians football program enters Week 5 in search of its third straight victory against Greene County Tech of Paragould, Arkansas. Kennett beat Greene County Tech 33-21 in 2016 and 60-27 in 2015. Greene County Tech’s last victory against Kennett was a 39-15 decision in 2014.

Kennett enters the road affair with a 3-1 record. Kennett averages 42 points per game and allows 22 points per game. Kennett beat Fredericktown 50-14 in Week 1, lost to Sikeston 27-20 in overtime in Week 2, beat Carnahan 52-16 in Week 3 and beat Caruthersville 42-22 in Week 4.

Greene County Tech, which starts its season two weeks later, currently supports a record of 0-2 and is in search of its first varsity win since Sept. 11, 2015. Greene County Tech lost to Vilonia 29-18 in Week 1 and lost to Newport 47-15 in Week 2.

Greene County Tech has moved the ball 88 times on the ground for 498 yards and completed nine of 20 passes for 87 yards in its first two games. Greene County Tech senior Kobe Brown has recorded all four of his team’s touchdowns moving the ball on the ground. Brown has 54 carries for 393 yards. Three Greene County Tech players have completed a pass. Brown has completed one of two passes for 16 yards, senior Garrett Stovall has completed four of 12 passes for 66 yards and senior Eli Mason has completed four of six passes for five yards and has two receptions for a team-high 17 yards.

Kennett has presented itself as a run-first team with the ability to put the ball in the air. Kennett has 158 carries for 966 yards and has completed 33 passes for 562 yards in its first four games. Senior quarterback Patrick Maddox has anchored Kennett’s offense. Maddox has completed 33 of 53 passes for 560 yards and thrown only one interception. He has rushed the ball 69 times for 393 yards. Maddox has thrown four touchdowns and rushed for eight more. Kennett senior X’Zavier Whitfield has 54 carries for 314 yards and senior Ty Ellis has 17 carries for 105 yards. Ellis has caught 10 passes for 184 yards. Senior Zane Wallace has seven catches for 161 yards and junior Parker McClain has nine catches for 103 yards.

The Kennett defense is coming off a Week 4 contest in which it intercepted four passes and recovered a fumble.
