Twenty-six Southeast Missouri State student-athletes were recognized Wednesday as the Ohio Valley Conference announced its Academic Medal of Honor winners for the 2016-17 academic year.

Awarded to student-athletes who achieve the highest grade point average in each sport, all 221 OVC student-athletes honored carried a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Southeast's 26 winners was second only to Eastern Illinois' 31.

The Redhawks had four multiple sport winners, all from cross country and track and field.

For Southeast, women's track and field boasted the most honorees with six; baseball had five to lead the OVC; women's soccer, softball and volleyball each had three; football and women's tennis each had two; women's basketball and men's track and field had one each.

The 221 recipients is the second-most total individuals recognized in an academic year, following 2015-16's 238. In the past five years, 1,059 OVC student-athletes have been recognized with the Academic Medal of Honor, with soccer boasting the most (33).
