BRIEFS: Morrill on podium again at national meet, SEMO soccer players win title
Notre Dame girls track and field standout Claire Morrill wrapped up her stint at the USA Track & Field National Junior Olympic Championships with a seventh-place finish in the 1,500-meter run (17-18 division) on Sunday in Lawrence, Kansas.
Morrill, who reached the podium in three other events at the national meet (800, steeplechase and 4x800 relay), ran a personal-best time of 4 minutes, 52.58 seconds in the event.
A rising senior for the Bulldogs, Morrill was one of five finalists for the Girls Track and Field award earlier this month at the 2017 Semoball Awards.
A pair of Southeast Missouri State women's soccer players lifted a national championship trophy on Sunday, as senior Kindra Lierz and junior Lauren Kaempfe helped St. Louis-area club Fire and Ice SC to victory in the Women's Premier Soccer League Championship.
FISC, with Lierz in goal, defeated Gulf Coast Texans 2-1 in the WPSL finale Sunday, getting a pair of goals from Kelsey Dinges.
Fire and Ice defeated the San Diego Sea Lions 2-1 in a semifinal on Saturday.
The WPSL is an amateur summer league that features more than 100 teams across the country.
SEMO begins practice Wednesday and will face Central Arkansas in an exhibition contest at Houck Stadium on Aug. 11. The regular-season opener is at Evansville on Aug. 18.
