Gutierrez, Pasley earn weekly honors from OVC
Southeast Missouri State track and field athletes Jarred Pasley and Kayla Gutierrez earned Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Athletes of the Week honors, the league announced Wednesday.
Pasley was Male Track Athlete of the Week after finishing second in the 400-meter run with a time of 47.38 seconds at Indiana State's Gibson Invitational, which is billed as the OVC-Missouri Valley Conference Challenge. That time was a season-best for the junior and tops in the conference. It led to his first award of the outdoor season and second this year.
Gutierrez claimed honors for Female Field Athlete of the Week after three top-five finishes at the Gibson Invitational. The senior was first in the hammer throw with a toss of 56.21 meters and third in the discus with a throw of 47.81 meters. Both are conference highs. She was also fourth in the shot put with a toss of 14.06 meters, the fifth-best mark in the OVC. It's Gutierrez's second award of the outdoor season.
"Both have been working hard this season," coach Eric Crumpeck said in a news release. "Jarred has been battling, and it was his first time really running this outdoor season due to injury so to open up big and have the time he did is huge. Kayla has been getting a little better every week, and it shows with having a strong weekend with three season-best marks. Hopefully they both continue to improve."
The Redhawks are back in action this weekend at the Georgia Tech Invitational. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Friday and runs through Saturday.
