MISSOURIAN ROUNDUP: Jackson baseball team splits two

The Jackson baseball team split a pair of games in pool play of the Midwest Classic on Monday at St. John Vianney High School in St. Louis.

The Indians dropped a 7-0 decision against Vianney in the first game before knocking off Fort Zumwalt West 8-4 in the second game.

Vianney's Luke Mann earned the win on the mound and helped himself at the plate with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. Mann pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings and allowed just one hit. He struck out nine batters and walked two.

Cole Welker was the losing pitcher for the Indians, who committed four errors and mustered only two hits at the plate. Welker gave up six runs (four earned) on two hits, finishing with one strikeout and five walks.

Anthony Altobella added a double for the Golden Griffins, who improved to 7-1 on the season.

In the second game, Jarrett Newell threw a complete game and had a pair of doubles to lead the way for Jackson (6-2).

Newell allowed four runs -- two earned -- on five hits and recorded three strikeouts and four walks.

Justice Crosnoe went 3-for-4 with four RBIs for the Indians, including a double and a triple, while Cole Welker finished 3-for-3 with a double. Jackson's Braeden Dobbs contributed three RBIs on pair of hits, one of which was a double.

Clarke Davenport got the pitching start for FZW (5-3) but lasted only two innings. He gave up seven earned runs on seven hits, finishing with one strikeout and two walks.

Michael Cessna finished 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Jaguars at the plate.
