Southeast Missouri State softball coughs up late lead, loses 6-5 to Kansas
Southeast Missouri State softball again coughed up a late lead as Kansas hit a walk-off home run Sunday in a 6-5 loss.
It was SEMO's third straight defeat. In all three of those games, the Redhawks (15-10) have given up lead in the final two innings.
The Jayhawks (17-11) trailed 5-3 entering the seventh before Madison Sykes delivered the three-run, walk-off homer.
Harli Ridling led off the frame with a single. Taylor Dodson continued the rally with an infield single. Sykes then ended the game with her blast over the center field wall.
SEMO took a 2-0 lead in the second as Sarah Messex and Mykaela Arellanes had back-to-back RBI doubles. Southeast tacked on two more runs in the fifth. Kansas then responded with a run in the fifth and another two in the sixth to cut the lead to 4-3.
Madison Harris gave SEMO a little breathing room with a solo homer in the top of the seventh. But Kansas responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning and the win.
Alexis Estes took the loss for Southeast. She gave up four hits and three runs in two-thirds of an inning. Kansas out-hit the Redhawks 13-9.
The Redhawks begin Ohio Valley Conference play Saturday with a doubleheader at Tennessee Tech.
