MISSOURIAN ROUNDUP: Saxony Lutheran girls basketball gets revenge, hands Oran first loss

For a second year in a row, Saxony Lutheran handed the Oran girls basketball team its first loss of the season.

Sophomore Leah Cauble had another strong night with a game-high 31 points for the Eagles, but it was not enough as Oran could not contend with the revenge-hungry Crusaders and suffered and fell, 78-49, on the road in Fruitland, Mo.

Oran had defeated Saxony 64-62 in overtime for the championship of the Delta New Year's Invitational Tournament on January 5.

This time, the Eagles fell behind 42-25 at halftime and never could recover.

Brianna Stause added nine points, all from behind the arc, for Oran (14-1). Jessie Long and Kaylee Payne snagged five rebounds apiece for the Eagles.

Gracie Price finished with 16 points to lead Saxony Lutheran (11-4).

Emma Brune tallied 13 points and four assists while Laurel Mueller tossed in 12 points. Masyn McWilliams notched seven rebounds and six assists, Addi Beussink accumulated six rebounds and three steals and Courtney Kester had four steals for the Crusaders.

The Eagles return to Delta on Thursday for a regular-season Scott-Mississippi Conference matchup while Saxony visits Cape Central on Thursday for a SEMO Conference game.

A JV game was not played because Oran couldn't field enough players due to sickness.

Abbie Reece netted a game-high 20 points as the Tigers used a strong second-half performance to filet the Blue Jays in the win at home.

Corrie Reece sank 18 points for Cape Central (3-9), which held an 11-point lead at the intermission.

The Tigers then outscored the guests by 24 points in the second half to prowl away with the victory.

Yienvi Johnson notched 10 points, six rebounds and four steals for the Tigers while Scarlet Young finished with eight points, eight rebounds and four steals.

Hanna Floyd accumulated 15 points for Jefferson (5-10).

Megan Heisserer scored a game-high 20 points and recorded four steals as the Bulldogs easily disposed of the Indians in the conference road win.

Allie Ziegler tallied 17 rebounds to go along with her nine points for Notre Dame (7-5, 2-0 SEMO Conference). Sam Brennan grabbed six rebounds and had five points for the Bulldogs.

Notre Dame maintained a nine-point lead at halftime and held the hosts to single digits in the second half.

Heidi Shetley finished with nine points to sustain Kennett (7-7, 0-3) in the loss.

Kirsten Stief knocked down a 10-foot game-winner with 3.8 seconds left to lift the host Pirates to a victory over the Warriors.

Stief also grabbed five rebounds for Perryville (5-10), which also received 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists from Kirstin Jannin. Alyssa Stortz finished with 12 points, all from behind the arc, for the Pirates.

Sydni Basler scored a game-high 18 points to pace Valle Catholic (3-12).

Faith Grant bucketed a game-high 19 points to pace Scott City (0-11, 0-3).

William Rogers scored a game-high 15 points to lead the Crusaders to victory over the host Yellow Jackets to capture the championship of the 55th Annual Chester Invitational Tournament across the river in Chester, Illinois.

Corie Williams pitched in 14 points for Saxony Lutheran (16-1), which held a nine-point lead at halftime and outscored the hosts by eight points in the second half to clinch the title.

It was the third time the Crusaders have won the tournament, with their most recent win having come during the 2008-2009 season.

Demontae Martin finished with 13 points and Jack Weir contributed 11 points to pace Chester (12-5).

Garrett Dix recorded 10 points, eight rebounds and eight steals while Chase Brown also added 10 points for the Pirates.

Clayton Eck bucketed 14 points and Dylan Duty scored 11 points to pace Cobden (5-13).

Four players cracked double digits as the Panthers crushed the Tigers in the conference road rout.

Blake Bollinger led all scorers with 20 points for Meadow Heights (12-4, 4-0 Mississippi Valley Conference). Devin Wilfong recorded 16 points and four rebounds.

Lane Baremore tossed in 15 points for the Panthers, who trailed by five points after the first quarter but quickly turned things around and held the Tigers to single digits in the final three frames.

Scott Pohlman finished with 10 points while Trent Liley tallied six assists and six steals to go along with his four points for Meadow Heights.

Austin Cook and Billy Perry had eight points apiece to sustain Marquand-Zion (1-12, 0-2).
