MISSOURIAN ROUNDUP: Notre Dame boys basketball tops Helias for tourney crown

Sunday, January 8, 2017

For three quarters, the Notre Dame boys basketball team didn't have much of an answer for Helias Catholic's Landon Harrison, but with the game on the line, the Bulldogs rose to the occasion.

The 5-foot-11 Harrison finished with a game-high 32 points but scored only four points in the final 12 minutes, as Notre Dame amped up its defense late to edge out a 49-47 overtime victory in the championship game of the Third Annual Houlihan's Fightin' Irish Invitational Tournament on Saturday in Springfield, Missouri.

"I thought we played really good in this tournament," Bulldogs coach Paul Unterreiner said. "We played well, played together."

Blake Bauwens finished with 21 points to lead the way for Notre Dame (9-5), but perhaps even more importantly, he was faced with the tall task of guarding Harrison for most of the game.

Helias Catholic (10-2) scored only two points in the fourth quarter, which allowed the Bulldogs to draw even by the end of regulation.

"The Harrison kid for them is just a tremendous player, and people just kind of want to step up and try to play at that level with him," Unterreiner said. "Blake had an uneblieveable game and was a leader for us tonight. That's what kind of carried us."
