CROSS COUNTRY ROUNDUP: Notre Dame girls win Class 3 District 1 crown

The Notre Dame girls cross country team, running on its home course, had three of the top 10 finishers in winning the Class 3 District 1 meet Saturday.

Junior Alaina Baumgart led the Bulldogs with a fourth-place finish in 20 minutes, 21 seconds. Sophomore Bailey Beussink finished seventh in 20:46, while senior Katie Hanners (20:51) was eighth. Sophomore Claire Fenneweld and senior Alleigh Emmendorfer finished 17th and 18th, respectively, to round out the Bulldogs' winning score of 48.

Herculaneum sophomore Nautica Stricklin (19:57) led a 1-2-3 finish for the Blackcats, who also finished with 48 points. However, Notre Dame won the title on the 21st-place finish of sophomore Kennedy Mcghee, who finished eight spots ahead of Herculaneum's sixth runner.

Only the top two teams and 15 individuals qualified for this weekend's state meet in Jefferson City, Missouri.

On the boys side, Notre Dame finished fourth and did not qualify as a team. However, freshman Blake Morris (11th, 17:05) and sophomore Benton Keran (15th, 17:20) qualified individually for the state meet.

Class 4 Sectional 1

Senior Megan Barnum (20-:34) placed 11th in helping the Jackson girls to a second-place finish at the Class 4 Sectional 1 meet and a berth at the state meet.

Jackson finished with 66 points, three points behind Parkway West in the team standings. The top four teams and 30 individuals qualified for this weekend's state meet. Also making up Jackson's team score were Kaylee Wilson (15th, 20:40), Anna Compton (20th, 21:03), Kennedy Bauer (24th, 21:04) and Courtney Hahs (30th, 21:19).

Washington junior Mikayla Reed won in 19:30 as the host school featured three of the top four finishers in placing third.

On the boys side, Jackson junior Ean Buffington qualified for the state meet for a second time, finishing 17th in 17:23. The Indians placed eighth in the standings and did not qualify as a team.

Class 2 District 1

Woodland and St. Vincent finished first and second, respectively, in the boys competition in Washington, Missouri, as both teams qualified for the state meet.

Saxony Lutheran sophomore Caleb Cornelius won the meet in 17:26 and will compete individually at state. Woodland had four runners finished in the top 10, led by Logan Thomsen (second) and Brandon Sitzes (third). St. Vincent's top finishers were Andrew Lipe (sixth) and Joseph Baer (seventh). The top two teams accounted for 10 of the fastest 25 runners.

St. Vincent and Woodland also advanced on the girls side. St. Vincent won, paced by the top overall finisher Corin Carroll and her time of 22:12. Woodland, which finished second, was led by the senior Cheyenne Wells, who finished second overall. Saxony Lutheran's Katie Richmond qualified individually with a 12th-place finish.

Class 1 District 1

With three top 10 runners, the Oak Ridge boys won the meet at Notre Dame Regional High School.

Zalma will join them at state after finishing second, led by the top two overall finishers. Senior Peyton Ford won with a time of 17:26 and senior Jacob Steinberg was behind him at 17:55.

Drew Kranawetter was Oak Ridge's top finisher in fourth. David Layton (sixth) and Zach LeGrand (seventh) were the two other top 10 scores for the Bluejays. Sylvester Morse (12th) and Jarett Seabaugh (16th) rounded out the winning score.

Advance junior Cade Long ran a 19:21 and finished fifth while Delta senior Charlie Ledbetter was 10th at 19:39. Meadow Heights' Austin Gruenke and Nathan Shrum also qualified individually for state.

The Chaffee girls finished second with five runners placing in the top 20 and edged third-place Valle Catholic by one point. The Red Devils were led by junior Alyssa Lunsford's sixth-place finish in 24:41. Katie Glueck was 10th (25:31), Kari Pepple 14th (26:24), Sarah Burch 17th (27:12) and Regan Swain rounded out the scores with an 18th-place finish (27:24). Oak Ridge sophomore Taylor Seyer, junior Jordan Layton, Zalma freshman Lindsey Umfleet, Leopold sophomore Patience VanderMierden and freshman Kyla Beel all qualified individually with top-15 finishes.
