MISSOURIAN ROUNDUP: Perryville volleyball team rallies past Jackson

Camryn Baer hammered seven kills as Perryville rebounded after a loss in the first set to defeat host Jackson in a three-set thriller in high school volleyball action Tuesday.

Taylor Weber dished out 11 assists for Perryville (10-9-4), which won 20-25, 25-18, 25-23.

Maci Hotop added eight digs and six kills for the Pirates.

Hannah Hunt had a double-double with 15 digs and 12 kills to lead Jackson (14-5-1). Olivia Hallet banged out 13 kills and Olivia Wendel contributed three kills for the Indians. Lainey Broussard and Malary Burger each tallied 14 assists and 10 digs apiece. Nicole Lawson also had 10 digs and Hannah Wilson accumulated 24 digs to pace the Indians' defensive effort.

Saxony Lutheran 25 25, Cape Central 15 9

Allie Sprink nailed eight kills and dished out eight assists as the Crusaders easily disposed of the Tigers on the road.

Lexie Barnes recorded 10 digs and nine assists for Saxony Lutheran (12-6-1). Ashley Fritsche added seven kills and five blocks for the Crusaders.

Cape Girardeau Central fell to 3-11-1.

Jackie Verseman accumulated 12 kills, seven digs and two blocks to lead the Indians in the easy conference sweep of the visiting Black Cats.

Kara Kassel put up three blocks for St. Vincent (7-14-1, 4-0 JCAA Conference-Small Schools Division). Jenna Winkler dished out 12 assists while Peyton Triller notched six digs and Kaiti Schnurbusch tallied five digs to pace the Indians.

Herculaneum fell to 14-2 overall and dropped to 3-2 in the conference.

Dexter 25 25, Leopold 15 7

Freshman Kyla Beel nailed eight kills, notched five digs and put up two blocks but it was not enough as the Wildcats were crushed by the Class 3 powerhouse Bearcats on the road.

Patience VanderMierden recorded 11 assists and four digs for Leopold (9-7-2). Shelby Schreckenburg added six digs for the Wildcats.

Krysten Garrison finished with 11 kills and seven digs to lead Dexter (13-4-2). Addie Kruse added five kills while Megan Trout notched six digs. Bailee Williams dished out 12 assists and had five digs for the Bearcats.

Scott City 25 25, Charleston 18 16

Madison Thomas finished with four kills as the host Rams clinched their first conference victory in the straight-set win over the Blue Jays.

Emma Cundiff served five aces and contributed five assists for Scott City (4-13, 1-5 SEMO Conference).

Charleston lowered its overall record to 1-13 and 0-4 in conference play.

The Eagles came close to winning the first set but fell just a few points short to suffer their first conference loss of the season on the road.

Zaria Blissett recorded six kills to lead Sikeston (8-7, 4-2 SEMO Conference). Morgan Merrill and Morgan Poindexter hammered five kills each while Olivia Nash added four kills. Annie Ensor dished out 15 assists for the Bulldogs.

Oran dropped its overall record to 4-8-1 and fell to 3-1 in the conference.

Meadow Heights 25 8 25, Zalma 18 25 19

The Panthers were crushed in the second set by the host Bulldogs after winning the first set but made up for it in the third set to get the conference win.

Meadow Heights improved to 4-11-2 overall and 1-1 in the Mississippi Valley Conference. Zalma dropped to 2-11-3 and finished 0-3 in the conference.

Eagle Ridge 25 25, St. Paul Lutheran 23 15

Jessie Gartman nailed 12 kills as the undefeated Eagles managed to fly away with the win over the winless Giants after a close first set.

Jasmine Brown recorded seven assists and four aces for Eagle Ridge (12-0). Noel Friedrich tallied seven digs and four aces for the Eagles.

St. Paul Lutheran (Farmington) fell to 0-8.

SOFTBALL

Jackson 8, Windsor (Imperial) 7

Sophie Wunderlich drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Indians in their come-from-behind victory over the Owls at Jackson City Park.

Wunderlich also doubled and had two RBIs to lead Jackson (9-4). She also picked up the win in the circle where she pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up three earned runs on five hits. She had two strikeouts and no walks.

Camryn Clark was the losing pitcher and also doubled to pace Windsor (6-8). She allowed five earned runs and recorded three strikeouts and three walks.

Jessica Veselske batted in two runs for the Owls.

Londyn Lorenz hit a double and drove in three runs but it wasn't enough as the host Crusaders bowed to the Eagles.

Zoie Roth went the distance in the circle to sustain the loss for Saxony Lutheran (2-15). She allowed nine earned runs and recorded eight strikeouts and nine walks.

Grace Sutton pitched a complete game to lead East Prairie to its first win of the season. She gave up five earned runs, struck out five and walked two.

Chanie Moreland doubled twice and tallied two RBIs for the Eagles (1-8).

Kylie Wilhite had a good day at the plate, batting in four runs and lasting a full game in the circle as the Red Devils picked up the victory over the district nemeses Bulldogs at Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff.

Wilhite allowed three earned runs, struck out three and walked one batter for Chaffee (8-4).

The Bulldogs attempted to stage a late-game comeback but fell two runs short in the final inning.

Summer Shockley pitched a whole game to take the loss for Van Buren (6-3). She gave up two earned runs, struck out six and walked two. She also recorded two RBIs for the Bulldogs.

Cole Nichols smacked a home run and a triple to lead the unbeaten Cubs in the five-inning rout of the visiting Pharaohs of Tamms, Illinois.

Taylor Ogden was the winning pitcher and also doubled with two RBIs for Bell City (12-0). He threw a complete game and gave up one earned run while striking out seven and walking three.

Bobby Wright added a home run and two RBIs for the Cubs.

Poplar Bluff 7, Cape Central 1

Jeffry Hardin scored six times, setting a team record for goals in a game, to lead the host Mules to their third victory this season over the Tigers.

Cole Knight scored the lone goal for Cape Girardeau Central in the 76th minute on a loose ball in front of the net off a corner. John Grammer got the initial header on the corner that was deflected to Knight who got a foot on the ball in traffic.

Goalkeeper Spencer Kidd made eight saves for the Tigers (5-10).

Hardin scored a pair of goals on penalty kicks, one in the 21st minute and another in the 73rd minute. The senior forward put the Mules ahead in the 15th minute on a breakaway goal and made it 2-0 just 2 minutes, 24 seconds later.

Nick Rowland's goal on a rebound put Poplar Bluff up 4-0 and Hardin followed just 22 seconds later with another goal. Hardin's fifth goal came in the 58th minute after Kidd made a save on Adam Vincent's shot. Vincent had a pair of assists for Poplar Bluff (5-7).

Jackson 7, Sikeston 0

Justice Crosnoe scored three goals and had one assist as the host Indians blanked the Bulldogs to get their 10th win of the season.

Josh Scholl tallied two goals and one assist while Eion Vaughn added one goal and one assist for Jackson (10-1). Desmond Morriss had the other goal while Drew Brown, Hunter Crowden, Liam Gray and Colton Seyer each had one assist for the Indians.

Goalkeeper Brayden Emmons had four saves in the shutout.

Sikeston fell to 6-7 with the loss.

Blake Bauwens netted two goals as the host Bulldogs came out on top over the Terriers in the dogfight.

Grayson Mueller and Michael Rosenquist scored one goal apiece for Notre Dame (8-1-1). Austin Dill and Sam Mocherman contributed one assist each for the Bulldogs.

Goalkeeper D.J. Lynch had five saves.

Tanner Burke and James Oberg scored the goals for Carbondale (4-8).

Hunter Pritchard netted two goals for Perryville (10-4, 2-0 JCAA Conference). Austin Hotop added one goal and one assist and Stanley Volansky scored the other goal for the Pirates. Caleb Hadler and Ethan Hadler dished out two assists apiece while Isaac Ellsworth, Lazaro Miranda and Quint Schamburg each contributed one assist for the Pirates.

Goalkeeper Trent Unterreiner had two saves in the shutout.

Shaun Brooks made 18 saves in the post for DeSoto (2-8, 0-2).

Eagle Ridge 3, St. Paul Lutheran 0 (PKs)

Anand Patel recorded one goal and one assist as the Eagles were victorious over the Giants in penalty kicks following a 3-3 tie at the end of regulation.

Hunter Jones and Nemnja Tosic netted one goal apiece for Eagle Ridge (3-5). Michael Roth contributed one assist for the Eagles.

Goalkeeper Andrew Morrison had six saves.

The Tigers shattered the pool record in five events and set state cuts in four events and swept the Indians in every event to win the dual at the Southeast Aquatics Center.

Central junior Brogan Davis broke the pool record in two events with his first-place finish of 1 minute, 44.96 seconds in the 200 freestyle where the original pool record stood at 1:50.06. The two-time reigning Semoball Boys Swimmer of the Year also shattered the pool record in the 500 freestyle with his first-place time of 4:52.69, breaking the original record of 4:57.09. Jacob Bening also broke the pool record in the 50 freestyle (23.28 seconds) with his first-place time of 22.93 seconds and set a state-qualifying time of 56.14 seconds in the 100 backstroke for the Tigers. Sam Hahs accomplished the same feat, breaking the pool record of 1:03.83 (that was originally set by Jackson alum Joey Janisse) in the 100 breaststroke with his first-place time of 1 minute, 1.19 seconds and setting a state cut in the 100 butterfly with his first-place time of 55.01 seconds. Reagan Ragsdale also set a state-qualifying time of 2:04 in the 200 individual medley for the Tigers. The Tigers also broke the pool record of 1:45.02 in the 200 medley relay and set a state cut in the 200 freestyle relay with their first-place finish of 1:33.04.
