2009-10 Ellington Boys Basketball Preview

Coach: Armand Spurgin, 1st year

District: Class 2 District 4 at Van Buren (Bismarck, East Carter, South Iron, Valley, Viburnum, Winona)

Key Returners: Derek Emery, Riley George, Drew Morrison

Overview: The Whippets are back under the direction of Spurgin after he last coached there in the 2006-07 season. The Whippets will be without Michael Brawley and Brad Baysinger who graduated but Emery is back as the point guard from last season.

The team will be relying on Emery as well as fellow seniors Drew Morrison and Riley George.

"They will be our team leaders and our go-to guys," Spurgin said.

Emery has had three years on varsity and should provide stability while Morrison has a solid shot that should help the Whippets. George, at 5-10 should be solid in the post on a team that's tallest player is Zach Fox at 6-1.

Juniors that should contribute are Holden Henry and Tanner McNail. Spurgin said keeping off the injured list is important.

"Staying healthy is a big for us," Spurgin said. "Also, those younger guys getting experience."

Quote: "We talked about goals, finishing strong in our conference. Even though we have (just) three leaders, our biggest goal is to get better every game." -- Armand Spurgin
