CAMPBELL -- The Portageville Bulldogs baseball team hoisted their first district championship Tuesday afternoon after beating the South Pemiscot Bulldogs 5-2.

Portageville set the tone early against the opposing Bulldogs when senior Jacob Estes stepped to the plate in the top of the first. With two on, Estes delivered with a three-run shot to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead and they never looked back.

"We really capitalized on their mistakes early on," said Portageville coach Lee Wallace. "Jacob (Estes) hit a three-run home run in the first to give us the lead and then Mikey Johnson came in and pitched really well for us."

Johnson went the distance in the Class 2, District 1 finals, allowing three hits while walking five and striking ' out six. South Pemiscot's Caleb Canoy was credited with the loss.

Portageville (11-8) will now take on the winner of the Class 2, District 2 final between Charleston and Scott City next Monday in sectional play.
