ROUNDUP: Greenville holds off Bell City 2-1 in baseball

The Greenville Bears picked up a pair of runs in the first inning and held on for a 2-1 road win Tuesday at Bell City.

Leadoff man Nick Wren reached on an error to start the and came around to score game on a double by Robert Abernathy. Jacob Wood then drove Abernathy home with a single.

The Bears had opportunities to add to their lead but could not capitalize getting runners on base but not turning those plays into runs.

"We had baserunners on throughout the game, but we made silly baserunning mistakes," Bears coach Jason Hill said.

Tyler Dougherty pitched 5 1/3 innings to get the win for the Bears, allowing an unearned run on three hits. He struck out one and walked four. Joey Morey picked up the

going 1 2/3 innings with four strikeouts and a walk.

Ellington 10, East Carter 7

The Redbirds had the bases loaded when the final out of the game was recorded.

"Their pitcher got a little wild, and we were pretty disciplined, so we were able to get a few," East Carter coach Brock Crowley said.

After playing the Whippets to a 2-2 tie after the first inning Crowley's team allowed three runs in the third and four in the fifth as the Whippets built a 10-3 lead. Ryan Brawley led the Whippets, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run.

Derek Miller went 2-for-2 to lead the Redbirds. He also allowed seven runs in five innings on the mound to take the loss.

Brandon Huffman allowed three runs in four innings to pick up the win for Ellington.

Clarkton 8, Holcomb 5, 8 innings

Jake LaMunion hit a go-ahead single to left-center field to drive in Tolby Richardson and lead the Reindeer to a win in their season Richardson opener. led off the inning with a single and stole second to put himself in scoring position.

"They are our senior leaders and we kind of expect that from them " Clarkton coach Scott Blackburn said.

Campbell 10, East Prairie 1

The Camels took advantage of eight East Prairie errors in a home win Tuesday afternoon.

"We didn't hit the ball well but took advantage of their mistakes " Campbell coach Jeff Boner said.

Joe Campbell threw three innings to earn the win and Dylan Lynn finished the game for the Camels by throwing the last four innings.

"Both pitchers seemed to work the strike zone really well," Boner said. "Lynn threw a lot of strikes and got ahead of the batter which is what we are always talking about."

Cote Harralston led the Camels as he had one hit and two RBIs in the win.

South Pemiscot 17, Malden 13

Craig Jones went 4-for-5 with six RBIs and Sean Merritt was 3-for-5 and drove in four for the Green Wave, who collapsed defensively late in the game.

Malden allowed 11 runs over the final two innings. Kaleb Canoy led South Pemiscot, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs.

"We outhit them, we just didn't outpitch them," Malden coach Tim Harmon said. "Our pitchers gave up too many walks."

SOFTBALL

Doniphan 17, Alton 0, 5 innings

Marybeth Cosgrove allowed three hits in five innings of work and struck out six as the Donettes dominated Alton. Cassey Hart went 2-for-3 with a 3-run home run and drove in a total of six runs to lead the Doniphan offense.

Corning 6, Naylor 2 The Lady Eagles led 2-1 entering the fifth inning but allowed two hits and committed a pair of errors in that inning in taking the loss. Hailee Deckard went 1-for-2 while Chelsea Lane struck out seven in the loss.
