Bell City's Cole Nichols takes team-first approach, earns Southeast Missourian Baseball Player of the Year
By Trent Singer ~ Southeast Missourian ~ 07/02/16
The numbers are impressive, but they don't define Cole Nichols. A multi-sport athlete at Bell City, Nichols is more concerned with being represented by his baseball team's accomplishments, and those don't pale in comparison. The Cubs have gone 49-6 during the last two spring seasons, wrapping up their most recent campaign by becoming the first Class 1 school to win back-to-back state championships since the state diverged to more than two classes in 1980, and it was Nichols who turned in the performance of his life in a 7-2 win over New Covenant Academy in the championship game.. ...

By Trent Singer ~ Southeast Missourian ~ 06/01/16

NOTEBOOK: Jesse Smith leads Bell City baseball team's air-tight defense in title game
By Trent Singer ~ Southeast Missourian ~ 06/01/16
O'FALLON, Mo. -- Bell City junior Jesse Smith didn't really expect to be such a factor on defense in the Cubs' 7-2 win over New Covenant Academy in the Class 1 state championship Wednesday at CarShield Field. The starting second baseman also didn't know the Warriors had four left-handed batters in their starting lineup...
Bell City baseball rallies to reach Class 1 state championship game
By Trent Singer ~ Southeast Missourian ~ 05/31/16
O'FALLON, Mo. -- Maybe it was the rain delay, or maybe it was the early-morning start. By the time the final out was recorded, it didn't really matter. In the first half inning Tuesday morning following a 15-hour weather delay that postponed the Class 1 baseball semifinal between Bell City and Silex, the Cubs put themselves in a four-run hole...
Defending state champion Bell City baseball team shows poise in return to final four
By Jeff Breer ~ Southeast Missourian ~ 05/29/16
BELL CITY, Mo. -- Bell City baseball coach Justin Simpher and his players take pride in a large picture that hangs inside the school's gymnasium commemorating the 2105 team as Class 1 state champions. A year ago, the Cubs parlayed their first district title in 25 years into the "Kings of Class 1" with a sparkling 25-3 record...

BELL CITY, Mo. -- There's a lot of winning when the Bell City Cubs and 8-year-old Izaac Pursley get together. Izaac won over the Cubs at the Southeast Missouri Challenger Baseball event they volunteered to help with last weekend in Sikeston, Missouri, after they won the Class 1 District 2 title...

By Dustin Ward ~ Dexter Daily Statesman ~ 05/26/16
BISMARCK, Mo. -- Bell City starting pitcher Austin Hicks felt like he had his good stuff from the get-go for a second straight playoff start Wednesday afternoon in a Class 1 quarterfinal against Bismarck. "I felt great," Hicks said. "Like I said last week, I felt like I could throw any pitch at anytime and get hitters out."...
Defending state baseball champion Bell City clobbers Gideon
By DUSTIN WARD ~ Daily Statesman ~ 05/24/16
BELL CITY, Mo. -- Bell City coach Justin Simpher wanted his baseball team to take full advantage of the opportunity of being the visiting team on the scoreboard in a Class 1 sectional against Gideon on Monday. "We had to be the visiting team today," said Simpher, whose Cubs were playing on their home field. "So the message was to take advantage of the chance to swing it first, put some runs up early and set the tone for the rest of the game."...

Southeast Missourian ~ 05/22/16
Maurice Davis has done it again. The Kelly senior successfully defended his state title in the 100-meter dash, finishing the race in 10.87 seconds at the Class 2 state track and field championships Saturday in Jefferson City, Missouri. Davis also added a second-place finish in the 200 (22.50), an event in which he placed fifth a year ago, and a seventh-place finish in the triple jump (41 feet, 2 inches). Skyline's Madison Davis took first in the 200, edging Maurice Davis by .09 seconds...
