So great to see that the best team in SEMO history is being inducted into the Hall of Fame! And yes, best team in SEMO history! Much tougher to win 24 games and make the NCAA Tourney then to win a D-2 championship. That team's starting lineup was so complete: excellent PG in Michael Stokes (was he the last non-white point guard SEMO has had, lol), hard-nosed SG in Antonio Short, and a great front-line in Branson, Johnson, and Bunche. I still think that if they beat LSU, they beat an overrated Texas squad in the next round (a team LSU dominated in the next game). Gary Garner and those assistants put together one heck of a squad that deserves a much bigger presence (team picture and bigger banner) then they currently have at the Show Me Center. This team brought out the students too! I remember seeing 5,000+ for a meaningless game against Eastern Illinois back then, whereas they'll be lucky to get 3,000 this year, even for the Hall of Fame game. Miss those days! I will be on my feet when they announce this team for sure, just like I was 13 years ago.
Fully agree with adding in a big team picture and a much better banner inside the SMC for this team. I'm sure some locals may disagree with the "best team ever" remark, as many old-timers are still very pro-Shumate and the 80's teams. I have to admit, it's sad that the students don't show up more like they used to. Maybe Nutt needs to go around to all the fraternities and sororities and get them to come out or something. SEMO marketing really needs to do a better job on campus is my guess.
Agreed. What a sorry crowd for tonight's game. School spirit needs raised, and why would any recruit want to play in a gym that's 25% full? Also, seeing the players from that 99-00 team brought back great memories! Even the bench was incredible. Tim Scheer was one of the best high school players in Missouri high school history, and McCuthison was such a great all-around player as well. Wasn't Derek Winans on that bench too?
I thought it was a shame that they didn't announce the players in attendance. Just embarrassing on SEMO's part. Brought back great memories. Ran into them all down at the casino after. They were a joy to talk to and were more than willing to share a few words with you.
Those three years were truly fun to watch. Bud Eley started it. Went both years to Nashville. The year Aubrey Reece broke are hearts, to Mike Legg calling out it's the Indians turn to dance. What memories. Still remember the play Bunche had a 17 footer i believe down the stretch that just missed. I agree i was trying to put names with faces. INDIAN FEVER>
NOTHING BETTER HAS A LOCAL KID SEEING THE DOMINOES DECIMAL METER HIT OVER 100 AT THE GYM EVERY NIGHT. I THINK IT WAS THE SOUND OF THE OLD DOUBLE DRIBBLE FROM NES. BOY LOVED ME SOME SEMO HOOPS THEN.
