Private schools rule volleyball. 44% and the final 4 teams across the board and I'm guessing 100% will be stAte champs. Im not much on the public v private debate, but there is obvious advantages screaming at us with girls volleyball.
I'm neutral on the whole private school vs. public school advantages in sports debate, but I do see where CoachKen is coming from. I imagine most of these private school teams play with each other year round in the same club/traveling/USAV teams, which increases team cohesion and alertness when it comes to high school season. Yeah, it's really not fair to public schools, but I define best as competing against the best there is. Again, CoachKen makes a good point. MSHSAA should take a look at this issue because you see it raised in other sports as well. I'd be okay with a Public Schools State Tournament and Private Schools State Tournament, but that's just my two cents.
Private schools may sweep the field, but I think New Haven has a shot in Class 1.
I will respectfully disagree with the statement that private schools will sweep the championships. The best volleyball program in the state of Missouri is Lafayette, a public school. 3 of the 4 schools in Class 4 are public. Class 3 has Pleasant Hill who seem to always be in the hunt for the championship. St. Pius should roll in Class 2. As for Class 1, Valle could be the team to beat, but 3 of the 4 schools are public.
As for teams playing together year around, that is not limited to private schools. Any program in any sport that competes at a high level usually plays, and more importantly, trains together. If you look at public school volleyball programs that have been successful in the SEMO Region, almost all of them play and train together year round. Dexter, Advance, Perryville and Farmington are just a few that come to mind.
Lafayette (a public school, as pointed out above) has won Class 4 the last five years. Still in the hunt this year, although many thought they would lose to St. Joe's on Saturday.
unclegrubworm!! What is your opinion of how Lafayette has enjoyed such a successful run as a public in Missouri Class 4...the largest class in volleyball??
I'm pretty sure the Rockwood volleyball club is some how connected with Lafayette high school. They start those kids out really young. Success breeds success. I remember in the late 80s, 90s and early 2000s Borgia was extremely successful. Back then they just happen to have all the best talent right in the Washington area. Those kids see 10 championship banners on the all each year. They strive for that. I know it's different with public/private but Lafayette pulls from a very large area.
