High School Football Forum: Gridiron Pick'em Week 1

*
Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Aug 18, 2014, at 8:57 AM:

Welcome back to Gridiron Pick'em season 2! I thought last year, the first year for Gridiron Pick'em went really well. I believe we even had over 40 people participate. Cheesehead won the whole competition last year, and I know he is looking forward to defending his title haha. I enjoy doing this pick'em, because it gives us another reason to pay attention to other match-ups and root for other teams and players. It also gives us access to a list of the games that are happening each week, as well as a bit of competition and bragging rights to see who really knows their stuff haha. For those who don't know how the pick'em works, I will take a brief moment to explain. Each week I list a few games, of which you will comment and pick the winners, and you receive points for every game that you get correct. After the games have concluded, I will tally the results and post those on Semoball on their own results thread with a running tally. The person with the most points at the end of the year will recieve a $30 Visa gift card! Please feel free to have football related discussions on these threads as well if you so choose (abiding by Semoball rules). I hope everyone enjoys the Gridiron Pick'em, good luck, and thanks for participating!

One new addition I'm excited about is a BuckMajor Sports Twitter page that launched last night! This will be a great place to talk about Southeast Missouri sports, and general college and professional sports info. It will have items such as games of the week, players of the week, hopefully lots of photos of various games that people attend, and of course tons of area game scores. Also on the twitter page will be Gridiron Pick'em information like when the pick'em goes up, the game of the week, friendly reminders, and each weeks winner and points leader. So go follow that page, or maybe you have kids with Twitter, or a hip 70 year old mom who has Twitter haha. The page is @BuckMajor3 or search BuckMajor Sports!

First a few rules:

The picks have to be in by the time the game starts.

If you pick an upset, and you are the only one that picks that team to win and they win, you will receive a 2 point bonus. If two people pick it you split the bonus.

The winner each week receives a two point bonus

I may introduce other games inside the game each week (such as pick the High School running back that rushes for the most yards this week).

And remember the winner at the end of the year gets a $30 Visa gift card.

So without further ado, here are this week's games:

- Since this is the first week, I've noticed it takes people a bit to get into the swing of things. Therefore there will not be as many games this week, so those that get started late, or miss the first week are not way behind in points. This will be a good week to get everyone into the swing of things.

FRIDAY, AUG 22ND

1. Jackson vs. Battle (1 point)

2. Mt. View-Liberty vs. Caruthersville (1 point)

3. Malden vs. NMCC ( 1 point)

4. Sikeston vs. Charleston (1 point)

GAME OF THE WEEK (Please pick winner and final score for a tiebreaker)

  • Hey Buck, I am changing my pick on the Cville/Mt. View Liberty game due to realizing the game is there. Both teams lost so much from skill players (Grissom/Monroe) and (Acklin/Denton) that I am picking the home team to win.

  • It shows you how solid and deep St Gen is year in an year out as many people continue to pick them Friday night in spite of their key injuries. It should be a good game as I read Dexter has a lot of talent coming back. I look forward to reading the game summery. Bleed, I see you gave Dexter the edge by 8 points. What are your thoughts now that another player is out? One thing is certain about St. Gen, they have depth and will play hard to the final whistle.

-- Posted by cardinalnation on Wed, Aug 20, 2014, at 11:02 AM
  • I believe Ste gem will struggle in the first half this week. they are going to have 4 or 5 players who have never once stepped foot on a jv field more or less a varsity field. Freshman last year did not dress jv. They will have to get use the speed but they do have some athletes. Offensive line is a mystery. If they are able to be productive this team will be a lot better. Wrs are a solid bunch lots of hight. QB can play but he is a sophmore with no jv experience. Lots of questions which we will find out in 3 days.

    -- Posted by ESPN05 on Wed, Aug 20, 2014, at 11:45 AM
  • Since Ste. Gen is apparently down to their 3rd string RB, it would seem that Dexter's biggest challenge on defense will be to contain the Dragons's passing game. If we can do that and force their young QB into some turnovers, Dexter should have success in that game.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Wed, Aug 20, 2014, at 11:49 AM
  • The start time of the Dexter @ Ste. Genevieve football game has been moved back an hour to 8:00 because of the extreme heat.

All joking aside, tomorrow's games remind me of a couple years ago when it was brutal for the opening week. Hope everyone stays hydrated and healthy.

  • The countdown to one of the most competitive Week 1's in southeast Missouri football in the last decade is less than 48 hours away.

I'm still flipping a coin to try to decide who to pick the NMCC-Malden, Dexter-Ste. Genevieve and Kennett-Fredericktown games.

  • Although Dexter has looked much better this summer compared to last season, I keep hearing that they have around 5 key players out due to injury missed practices. Dexter doesn't seem to have a lot of depth, so the heat could play a huge factor in the game. Ste Gen is a good program and plays good football year in and year out, Pretty sure Stolzer will have them ready.

Heard that Malden is having the game ball brought in by skydivers before the opening kick off. I remember the last time something like this happened to NMCC, they then proceed to hang 48 points on an undefeated Portageville team 2 years ago. It appears Malden is taking NMCC lightly by all of the pre-game shenanigans. I wouldn't look past the Eagles this year. They looked very good in the Jamboree.

Malden better not be looking past NMCC. They only beat them 12-0 last year and NMCC is much improved from what I heard. You can't afford to look past anymore this early in the season.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Thu, Aug 21, 2014, at 11:25 AM
  • Blitzkrieg, to my knowledge, Dexter will have three starters out for Game 1. One is nursing a minor knee injury and the other two don't have enough practices in due to playing in the World Series with the Charleston Fighting Squirrels. But all three of them are starters so that will hurt us some. Hopefully, all three of them will be able to play against Bluff in Week Two.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Thu, Aug 21, 2014, at 12:05 PM
  • Malden has been doing this for years. It is always the first home game of the season. A local bank sponsors it and has tents with hotdogs and stuff. The skydivers are nothing new and have had prior commitments for a couple of years. Good to hear they are coming back.

Well I'm glad to hear that it is at least something that has been done before and not something new.

Always loved Malden's first game of the year activites. They do a great job and really bring out a crowd, some of the most people I have seen at a regular season game (parking sucks though)! I wish we could do something like that and get more fan support.

  • Just looking on Dexter's roster on Maxprep, they seem to have some veterans on the team, but a lot of young kids are filling up that roster. I think Ste Gen has the edge, Dexter's only chance is to be strong up front and play more physical. They won't win by out finessing anybody, when they have been good in Bearcat Country that's how they have done it and need do it.

  • I haven't looked at Maxpreps, Blitzkrieg, but Dexter has a lot juniors and seniors on the roster this year, so experience won't be an issue for the Bearcats this season.

Also, I can understand most people picking Ste. Gen over Dexter. We've won three games the last two seasons, haven't come close to beating the Dragons in that time, and you're playing a storied program at home led by one of the best coaching staffs in Semo. I do think Dexter will surprise some people and win the game, but I understand the skepticism. The Bearcats have a lot to prove.

  • I was hoping that our time of game would move a little later but was told that an hour wasn't going to make a difference in the temp. So hopefully everyone playing will have no problem tomorrow night. Charleston players will be playing a lot since I heard they have a small team and will be playing both sides. Stay safe everyone.

  • The dragons will be tough to beat at home tomorrow night even with injuries and and the younger players. The opposing team's defense will have to play very smart and recognize the different formations on the dragons offense. One play the dragons will very likely be in tight end set with two RB and the very next play the dragons could be in a spread formation. With this type of offense attack it could very well keep the defense guessing all night and on their heals. Needless to say a very well coached team.

It is I: 63834/94621...this is the first high school football game of the season that will absorb my faculties; both teams are nationally ranked in various polls. Byrnes (Duncan, SC) at De La Salle (Concord, CA). ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?!

  • Dude, this is a MISSOURI high school football board. Literally no one cares about what you're watching in California.

  • Cardinalnation, so far as I know, Dexter will only be missing one starter tonight due to a minor knee injury. We had no injuries that I am aware of at the Jamboree. We will also have two starters out tonight due to not having enough practices in. They both were playing with the Squirrels at the World Series.

  • Dexter is going to have to play a very physical game to get sg tonight. despite all the injuries sg always shows to be one of the best around. by the end of the year they might be scary..

    -- Posted by #onlytruth on Fri, Aug 22, 2014, at 2:00 PM
  • Agreed #onlytruth. With the heat, conditioning is going to be a huge factor tonight and just might decide the game.
