November 12, 2011 TIGERS 29 Maplewood-Richmond Heights 36

A cool, overcast and breezy day at Lindenwood University at St. Charles, MO saw our Tigers fall in Class 2 Quarterfinal play to a tough and speedy Blue Devil team from MRH. Missed opportunities could well be the title of this summary as the Tigers had two chances to recover the ball in the MRH endzone for touchdowns, but instead settled for 2 safeties. The Tiger offense got the ball into the redzone twice in the 1st half and again twice in the 2nd half...coming away with no points. Credit must be given to MRH, but oh boy would it have made a difference if the Tigers could have scored once or twice on those 4 opportunities.

Speaking of opportunities...the Tigers sporting their road white/over red unis kicked off to MRH clad in all black attire. Stephen Rodgers kick resulted in a touchback, giving MRH the ball at their own 20. On their 1st play from scrimmage, the Tigers forced a fumble, giving the Tigers the ball at the MRH17.

Elbie Fonda was stopped for no gain on 1st down. The Tigers then committed a false start penalty. Darrell Monroe carried for 2 yards and then 7 yards, setting up a 4th and 6. MRH dropped Monroe in the backfield for a loss, and the Tiger turned the ball over on downs.

MRH star QB Kahlid Hagens carried for 12 yards on 1st down. But three plays later, the Tigers forced another MRH turnover, giving the Tigers the ball at the MRH37.

The Tigers would not squander this opportunity. Fonda carried for 2. On second down, a Tyler Grissom lateral bounced out of bounds for 5 yard loss, setting the Tigers up with a 3rd and 13 from the 40. Fonda time, as Elbie cut and raced to the house for the 1st score of the day. Steve Rodgers added the PAT and the Tigers were in the lead 7-0.

MRH lost one yard on 1st down, then threw 2 incomplete passes, and punted to the MRH32.

Tyler Cobb was dropped for a loss of 4 on 1st down. Fonda time again...this time 36 yards to the "crib". The PAT failed, but the Tigers increased their lead to 13-0.

The Tigers 2nd score awakened the MRH offense. Karon Thomas carried for 16 yards, Wes Williams carried for 16 yards, and Elijah Keely got the Blue Devils on the board with a 22 yard run. John Barron added the PAT. TIGERS 13 MRH 7

The Tigers next possession saw 3 Fonda carries for a total of 4 yards. Tiger punter Colt Callens faked the punt (from the Tigers own 27...gutsy move), and raced 17 yards for the 1st down. Fonda then broke off a 28 yard gain setting the Tigers up at the MRH 29. Then, the usually sure handed Monroe was stripped of the ball, and MRH took over at the MRH 29.

The Monroe fumble definitely lit a fire under him...on MRH's 2nd play, Monroe blew threw the 295 blocker and forced Hagens to fumble...the fumble bounced and bounced as numerous players from each team attempted to recover the ball. MRH finally fell on the ball in the endzone, giving Monroe a safety and the Tigers 2 points. TIGERS 15 MRH 7

On the ensuing MRH kickoff, Fonda raced to the left, then cut back to the right for an amazing 65 yard KOR for a TD. Fonda was the beneficiary of several big blocks, including a Hunter Dickey block, which cleared the way to the endzone. The PAT was blocked, but the Tigers increased their lead to 21-7.

MRH would answer in their next possession, going 66 yards in 8 plays...primarily on Hagens' runs. Hagens gained 46 yards on 3 carries during the drive. Wes Williams punched it in from 1. Barron added the PAT, cutting the Tigers lead to 21-14

The Tigers next possession would go nowhere, as the MRH defense stifled the Tiger running game, holding the Tigers to 4 yards on 3 plays. The Tigers, punting into a stiff breeze would give MRH excellent field position on the Tiger 37.

MRH tied the game quickly with Hagens finding Cortland Brooks with a 37 yard TD pass. Barron added the PAT. 21-21 Momentum MRH.

The Tiger offense again faltered gaining only 5 yards and being forced to punt. MRH would take over o the MRH49. Hagens carried for 41 yards to the Tiger11. Keely then carried for 10 to the 1, and Hagens would punch it in from there. Barron 21-28

With just about 4 minutes to go in the half, the Tigers tried their best to get the game tied before halftime. Grissom, Fonda, and Monroe all contributing on the ground. But the big play being a Grissom pass that Travis Murray took away from the MRH defender for a 33 yard gain on 3rd and 8, keeping the Tiger drive alive. The drive would come to an end with the ball on the MRH13 as the half expired.

The Tigers would start the 2nd half with excellent field position thanks to Fonda's nice return to the Tigers44. The Tiger offense could only gain 2 yards on three plays and punted to the MRH15.

MRH gained one 1st down, before the Tiger defense stiffened and forced MRH to punt from their own 28. A high snap from center sailed over the punters head, and the ball bounced into the endzone. Several Tigers gave their all to recover the ball, but the ball trickled out of the back of the endzone for the Tigers 2nd safety of the game. TIGER 23 MHR 28

The Tigers almost repeated the 1st half kickoff return for a TD when Tyler Cobb raced to the MRH 15, assisted in part by 2 huge "decleater" blocks by Monroe. However, the Tigers could not capitalize on the great return, only moving the ball 5 yards before turning the ball over on downs.

MRH would move the ball near midfield, when the Tigers forced and recovered another fumble. However, the Tigers returned the favor, fumbling the ball back to MRH on the Tigers 1st play.

The Tiger defense held MRH to 0 yards on 3 plays, and on 4th down the snap again sailed over the punters head. The Tigers may have missed another opportunity here...I sure thought we could have "scooped and scored", but instead the Tigers fell on the ball at the MRH 18.

A Tiger holding penalty on 1st down moved the ball back to the MRH29. Fonda carried for 6 yards, and then for 4. On 3rd down, Grissom threw incomplete. Then on 4th and 11, Grissom carried for 4 yards, turning the ball over on downs.

The Tigers would create another opportunity, forcing MRH to fumble and giving the Tigers the ball at the MRH25.

Fonda carried for 10. Grissom ran for 8. Fonda for 2. Then Grissom scored, diving into the endzone for the 5 yard TD. The 2point run failed, but the Tigers were clinging to a 29-28 lead.

The lead, and the Tigers momentum would not last long, as MRH returned the kickoff all the way to the Tigers44. Williams broke loose for 26, then Hagens carried for 13. Keely would get the eventual game winning TD from 5 yards out. Barron added the PAT, giving MRH the lead: 29-36

It appeared the Tigers were prepared to respond. Starting from their own 17, Fonda carried for 6, and then for 5 and the 1st down. A 15 yard Fonda run was negated by a Tiger holding penalty. The Tigers would fail to convert a 1st down and Callens punted from the Tigers 28 to the MRH 34.

MRH would move the ball to the Tigers 41, but on 4th and 9, Hagens was stopped 5 yards short, giving the Tigers the ball with about 3 minutes left, at the Tigers37.

Fonda carried for 6 yards on 1st down. On 2nd down, Grissom had a nice run, but was hit just as he got to the sideline. The ball popped loose and was recovered by MRH right on the sideline, giving MRH the ball at the Tigers48.

MRH just needed to get one 1st down to run out the clock, but there was no quitting in our Tiger defense. Keely was stopped after 2 yards. Hagens carried for 6. Keely was stopped for a 1 yard gain, setting up 4th and 1. Hagens tried the QB sneak, but the Tigers stuffed the play for no gain, giving the Tigers one last chance from the Tigers39 with 1:06 to play and no timeouts remaining.

Grissom aired out 3 long passes...all of which fell incomplete. On 4th and 10, Grissom hit Fonda with a screen pass, but Fonda was bottled up after gaining only 4 yards.

MRH took 2 snaps and ended the Tigers amazing season.

Season summary: GREAT!!! The Tigers end the season 11-2, losing by 1 to a tough Class 3 Dexter team during the regular season, and losing today in the Class 2 Quarterfinals. This is the 4th consecutive year the Tigers have advanced to Class 2 Quarterfinal play!!!

Seniors playing their final game as a Caruthersville Tiger:

#5 Elbie Fonda: sorry guys, but I have to start with Cricket!!! What an amazing season and career Elbie has had for the Tigers. He should be 1st team, All-Conference, All-District, and All-State...and should be the pick for the coveted Carr award!!! His 2011 stats speak for themselves:

206 rushes 2415 yards 33TDs

24 catches 187 yards 1TD

15 returns 523 yards 3TDs

245 touches 3125 yards 37TDs

#2 Travis Murray: Travis picked the biggest game of the season to have his most beautiful catch!!! Great job Travis!

#4 Jamie Middleton: Ok, Jamie didn't play due to his broken elbow, but Jamie did an excellent job at his receiver position until his injury. Hopefully he will be ready for his senior baseball season, as Jamie is an excellent pitcher and catcher.

#20 Phil Lancaster: Excellent receiver and tough on defense. Phil just quietly went about his business, leading by example. Awesome season Phil!

#22 Tyler Cobb: A bunch of INTs, a ton of return yards, and a huge heart...all wrapped up in a little 150 lb body. You were exciting to watch Tyler.

#23 James Johnson: A first year player, who worked hard and got into the endzone for the Tigers this year. Nice job James.

#52 Alphonso Bates: Another first year player...Alphonso did an excellent job filling in on both the offensive and defensive lines. No telling how good you could have been if you had played all 4 years.

#54 Kendric Bradley: A stalwart on the offensive line, and an inside linebacker. Perhaps Brad's biggest claim to fame is his INT return for a TD.

#55 Tony Wooden: Yet another 1st year player. Tony is an excellent drummer for the Tiger marching band, and also helped the Tigers on the field this year.

#63 Lamar Gray: I was present in the lockerroom tonight as the Tiger coaches bragged on Lamar. What a great Tiger career Lamar has had on the offensive and defensive line. Lamar transformed himself into a beast...losing close to 90 lbs, yet gaining strength and learning proper technique which puts him up there with the Tigers all-time greatest linemen. Proud of you Lamar...a great Tiger.

#66 Bob Mehrle: A 4th generation Tiger. Bob's great-grandfather, grandfather and father are all former Tigers. Bob helped the Tigers on the offensive and defensive lines throughout his 4 year career.

#69 Jerry Hudgens: Jerry has worked hard to make himself into a fine center for the Tigers. The offense starts with Jerry! Jerry has handled his duties well. Of course, I must mention...Jerry scored a Tiger playoff TD against Crystal City !!!

#89 Jamar Oliver: I give poor old Jamar so much grief...but now I have to be honest: Jamar is one of the very best linebackers to ever don the Tiger Red and White. I would put him up there with Robert Mitchell, Brian Dodd, Mike Lack, Keith Floyd and other Tiger greats. So very proud of you Jamar...what a great, great Tiger career.

These Seniors have had amazing careers at CHS...just take a look:

2008: 5-8 Class 2 Quarterfinalist

2009: 10-3 Class 2 Quarterfinalist

2010: 12-1 Class 2 Quarterfinalist

2011: 11-2 Class 2 Quarterfinalist

That is 38-14...and the Quarterfinals every year.

Congrats to all of you Seniors...and remember: "Once a TIGER, always a TIGER"!!!!

Also, congratulations to the Tiger coaching staff. Head Coach Nathan Morgan, and coaches, Brad Treece, Stacy Bradshaw, Tyler Fullhart, Jimmy Jackson and Jonathan Hadden. As I told you all tonight...I'll take 11-2 and a quarterfinal game every year!!! A lot of people do not realize the time, effort, energy and patience that it takes to be a coach, especially at a small high school. I may not always agree with every call or decision, but I support you all and wouldn't change you for any staff in Missouri.

GO TIGERS GO!!!!

ALWAYS A TIGER!!!!
