High School Basketball Forum: Week of Jan. 15 Top Ten

Posted by Bogey Man on Thu, Jan 14, 2016, at 9:35 AM:

Ok folks, midway thru the season and time for polls to start taking shape. Getting late in season to keep predicting "potential". More credence needs to go to actual records. You can always make an argument about caliber of competition and "good losses", but time to start giving credit to wins vs. losses as any poll should. So here goes...

1. Sikeston (12-0)

2. Park Hills Central (12-1)

3. Saxony Luthern (13-1)

4. Cape Central (9-4)

5. Poplar Bluff (7-4)

6. Advance (10-2)

7. Bloomfield (10-1)

8. Jackson (9-6)

9. Charleston (8-6)

10.Woodland (10-3)

  • How does Bloomfield get in? I say pull them and give a nod to either Dexter, Malden, or Kennett.

-- Posted by rootingfortherefs on Thu, Jan 14, 2016, at 9:44 AM
  • Don't believe Dexter (5-8), Malden (11-4), and Kennett (8-7)records warrant Top 10 status. Malden could be on the bubble without any more stumbles.

-- Posted by Bogey Man on Thu, Jan 14, 2016, at 10:06 AM
  • Ok, I'll go with that, but Bloomfield losing twice Dexter and still making 7th? Roll 8-10 up and slide in somebody else new in the 10 slot.

-- Posted by rootingfortherefs on Thu, Jan 14, 2016, at 10:15 AM
  • Saxony is 15-1

    -- Posted by Kdub102002 on Thu, Jan 14, 2016, at 10:27 AM
  • bogey can't understand your thinking about records having anything to do with how good a team is in SEMO area when you are comparing all classes. How many times did Charleston win state championships with 8-10 losses by playing good teams. top 5 ok. bottom 5 my take:

    6 Jackson

    7 Charleston

    8 woodland

    9 Kennett

    10 NMCC

    bubble: dexter, advance, and bloomfield

advance eaked out a 5th in their Christmas tourn. and Jackson lost champ. by 2. makes no sense having them above advance. bloomfields performance against dexter takes them out.

  • Ok Ill take a stab.

    1. Sikeston

    2. Park Hills

    5. Charleston

    6. Saxony

    7. Woodland

    8. Jackson

    9. NMCC

    10. Kennett

Bubble teams ... Advance , Malden ( are playing alot better now ) SCC, Dexter

Courtobserver, didn't Malden just whip NMCC last week? Just wondering how NMCC gets rank ahead of Malden.

  • Just missed that one thanks for straightening me out.

-- Posted by courtobserver on Thu, Jan 14, 2016, at 11:51 AM
  • Good point Truth. I stand corrected. Tough dissecting every teams wins and losses.

Sorry courtobserver, just hard to rank an 8-7 Kennett team over 10-2 Advance and 10-1 Bloomfield.

Gotta give small schools some credit for nice midway season records.

-- Posted by Bogey Man on Thu, Jan 14, 2016, at 12:03 PM
  • I can remember in the good ol days, the DAR used to run small school/large school polls. We could move in that direction and vote on a top 5 for each. ONLY 5! 5A-3A Large & 1A & 2A Small. Thoughts??

  • 1. Sikeston

    2. PHC

    3. Cape Central

    4. Poplar Bluff

    5. Saxony

    6. Jackson

    7. Charleston

    8. Advance

    9. Woodland

    10. Bloomfield

Others that could very well be on list: NMCC, Malden, Dexter, Scott County Central

Take out Valle and enter Woodland. Rearrange the whole thing except the top 2, then your good lol.

    -- Posted by cker23 on Fri, Jan 15, 2016, at 11:57 AM
  • It's just an opinion, but I believe Valle is good enough to beat Bloomfield which has lost twice to Dexter. As I say just an opinion which means very little.

-- Posted by Bearcat Fan on Fri, Jan 15, 2016, at 12:16 PM
  • Valle???????????

    -- Posted by Semoball68 on Fri, Jan 15, 2016, at 12:28 PM

  • I take it you guys are Ste. Gen. fans? All of Valle's loses have come to larger schools. Plus they have beat class 5 Fox with no practice straight out of state football. Some of these other schools on here have lost to schools in lower class. I am just saying with the win/lost records of some of these teams, top 10 is bad period.

-- Posted by Bearcat Fan on Fri, Jan 15, 2016, at 1:40 PM
  • I'm a Valle fan too, just realistic. Its just my opinion that they don't belong in the Top 10 in SE Missouri. I wish them all the best, not a knock to them, Valle Basketball has come a long way in the last few years. SG has beat Valle twice and played some good teams close, does that mean they should be in the top 10? No it does not.

-- Posted by BBUBET on Fri, Jan 15, 2016, at 1:57 PM
  • Valle plays no help defense (None), no size down low, and has one really good guard. All of Valle's wins come from below avg teams Actually i would bet valle hasnt played a team with a winning record yet.

    -- Posted by ESPN05 on Fri, Jan 15, 2016, at 2:16 PM

  • I am tired of seeing a Saxony being ranked in the top 3. Come on guys, They've essentially played no one except Kennett and they lost to them. I don't see how they are in front of Cape Central or PB considering PB beat Kennett and most of you agree that Cape is better than PB. Yes great record, I'll give them top 5 only at this point. Cape plays Saxony on Tuesday. We'll see then.

  • *

AB84AllDay, you seem upset because of what others think! LOL You can't control that, but just for the record Saxony beat 11-4 Malden who just beat NMCC. The game against Kennett was determined in the last few minutes. Saxony simply ran out of gas playing 6 men against the depth Kennett has. We just got back our 7th man from injury so stamina should get better. Saxony also beat South Pemiscott who seemingly was the talk of the south until then. Cape is to come. We'll just have to wait and see what Tuesday brings.

-- Posted by porchswing on Fri, Jan 15, 2016, at 10:19 PM
  • West county has lost to hillsboro and liberty

Liberty has beat and lost to thayer once

And west county has beaten fredtown, av twice, potosi and St gen twice once in overtime so its easy to say that they could probably compete down here. Now saying they wouldn't be 10-2 with a class 3 schedule from around this area like ctown or nmcc is a lot more likely

-- Posted by superunbiased on Fri, Jan 15, 2016, at 10:44 PM
  • They play cape on the 20th also so we will see how good they really are

Superunbiased,I here you i just think they can play down here with alot of schools.I know Saxony is doing well and they beat st.gen by 17 and West county beat them by 15 so at least imo they are in the same zip code.I have watched West county play a couple of times have a 5'9 senior guard who takes alley oops and slams them also very balanced team and really tough minded bunch!

Cker23, how do you justify not even mentioning Malden? They've beat 3 teams you mention on your bubble. Just for the record Charleston isn't better than Saxony this year.

-- Posted by JustSpeakingTheTruth on Sat, Jan 16, 2016, at 10:42 AM

    OK. Its an opinion.

    -- Posted by cker23 on Sat, Jan 16, 2016, at 11:00 AM

LOL!! Is it also your opinion that Bloomfield, SCC, and Oran are better than Malden when they've beat all 3 of them??

-- Posted by JustSpeakingTheTruth on Sat, Jan 16, 2016, at 11:27 AM

    -- Posted by cker23 on Sat, Jan 16, 2016, at 11:34 AM
  • Truth that's a bold statement about Saxony being better than Charleston. What are you basing it off of? The records? If that's the case, what would Saxony record ne after playing Vashon, Sikeston twice, jackson, Covington TN, ND all class 4 or bigger? O know their one common opponent was Kennett who beat Saxony. Charleston beat them by 16 easily! I watched Saxony play Kennett, the pressure bothered them and I'm sure Charleston will be bring that pressure D. We shall see

    Woodlawn has the dominant player

    Saxony has the young team

    And Charleston has the tradition

    Interesting district matchups

Will there be any regular season games between the 3?

-- Posted by superunbiased on Sat, Jan 16, 2016, at 3:19 PM
  • *

No. The only district teams that Woodland plays in the regular schedule is Kelly and Clearwater.

    -- Posted by cker23 on Sat, Jan 16, 2016, at 4:00 PM
  • *

DA, no I'm not basing it off records. I'm basing it off what I know man for man. I know your players very well. That's all I'll say about that. Regarding your statement about pressure defense, Saxony wasn't beat by that. That game was evenly matched until the last few minutes. Saxony just ran out of gas playing 6 kids that night and lost by 7. Saxony will handle Charleston's pressure just fine. I like the Charleston team so don't look at me as someone bashing. Saxony plays 5 long range shooters at a time. Any given night either of the 5 could be hot! Shut down one and another will rise up.

-- Posted by JustSpeakingTheTruth on Sat, Jan 16, 2016, at 4:27 PM
  • Also, next Friday Jackson at Poplar Bluff. Will be a nice matchup to see who's got the early upper hand in the district.

Nope boys. Perryville is a good team. Saxony has beat them once this year and lost to them. Perryville also is one of the 3 teams that has defeated Woodland. The Pirates have a solid team. No doubt.

    -- Posted by cker23 on Sat, Jan 16, 2016, at 8:52 PM
  • Woodland lost to Perryville in O.T. at Woodland invitational second game of the year. If you remember cker, way too many turnovers by Woodland. They have handled the ball so much better since.

-- Posted by woodland alumni 1979 on Sat, Jan 16, 2016, at 9:53 PM

Yes over 20 turnovers if I can remember right. We were a step better than them in the forth quarter but in OT we scored 1 point to their 7.

cker23,Perryville did win the Woodland tourney and now the Chester tourney over Woodland and now Saxony. But didn't even come close to winning the Bob Sechrest christmas tourney in which another class 3 team won rather easy!Might want to keep your eyes open on PHC!

-- Posted by porchswing on Sun, Jan 17, 2016, at 12:37 AM
  • The best PHC team is the Girls team.

-- Posted by jayrod on Sun, Jan 17, 2016, at 7:34 AM
  • jayrod....I tend to agree, however, I haven't seen their boys play. I saw their girls play the Sikeston girls yesterday and I was thoroughly impressed. I don't think they missed a shot in the first 6 minutes of the first quarter and that was essentially the difference in the game. The Lady Dogs cut it to single digits in the third, but couldn't get closer than 7 (I think). Sikeston played with them pretty well after the first quarter, but PHC was too much. They have a very good team. And the emphasis is on team...they make the extra pass and look for the open shooter...regardless of who it is. #22,

I think her name is Skaggs, is a player and so is #33. Both played really well yesterday.

    -- Posted by Rocket689 on Sun, Jan 17, 2016, at 9:02 AM
  • Rocket689, totally agree PHC is the real deal. If you watched their game did you by chance see the Dexter-Miller game and if so, how do they match up together. You know they play next Monday night at Dexter.

-- Posted by courtobserver on Sun, Jan 17, 2016, at 9:17 AM
  • Perryville is 12-3. They beat woodland earlier this year at woodland. Beat dexter at dexter by 18. And just beat saxony last night by 8

Not really any size but can beat you by quickness, mid-range and Long-range shooting. They play pretty good D.

IndianPride,I concur with cker23"s scouting report about 8 deep don't really lose to much when they sub IMO Stark kid makes them go when he gets rolling they seem to feed off of him!

PHC is really good. They can flat shoot it.
