High School Basketball Forum: Week of Jan. 4 Basketball Scores

Posted by drawmules on Sun, Jan 3, 2010, at 1:17 PM:

There are several intriguing games this week. I plan on attending the Bernie/Twin Rivers game Tuesday, the Bernie/Advance game Thursday, and the Kennett/Poplar Bluff game Friday. If I receive a schedule for the Tiger Shootout I will be at Cape Central on Saturday. Does anyone have a schedule?

One game I will be unable to attend this week due to scheduling conflicts is the Richland / North Pemiscot game. This game features the second and third best Class 1 teams in Southeast Missouri. It might very well be the game of the week. I'll take Richland in this game. But North Pemiscot has already proven they know how to silence the critics this season. It should be interesting to see what happens Tuesday at Richland.

I hope to see scores posted as the week progresses. I might post one or two on this forum before the week is over!

  • Note: I just read a Special Weather Statement from the National Weather Service. Early projections indicate we could see four inches of snow Wednesday or Thursday. It should be interesting to see how this impacts games scheduled for Thursday and Friday. Here is the link to the Special Weather Statement http://www.weather.com/weather/alerts/localalerts/63822?phenomena=TSL&significan...

  • Tiger Shootout Schedule for this Saturday at Cape Central:

    Noon - Saxony vs. Advance

    1:30 p.m. - Notre Dame vs. Berkeley

    3 p.m. - Jackson vs. Parkway South

    4:30 p.m. - Cape Central vs. Seckman

    $5 to get in

The high school basketball action really picks back up Tuesday night, so be sure to check out the scoreboard and TeamTracker reports in addition of the this thread.

  • Note: The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch. I think the weather could have a significant impact on the Bernie / Advance game and the Dexter / Notre Dame game Thursday. I hope one of the games gets cancelled because I would really like to go to both of these games. Dexter plays their first game in their new facility Thursday. I would really like to see it. But I won't miss there Bernie / Advance game. Read more about the Winter Storm Watch at this link http://www.weather.com/weather/alerts/localalerts/63822?phenomena=WS&significanc...

South Pem beat Scott City by around 13. I think it was 90-77 and was a 26 point game with 2:40 left when Scott City put the subs in.

Gideon is not 3-1. I see maxpreps has Gideon listed as 3-1. Maxpreps also the score of the Bernie / Gideon game listed as 73-65. This is incorrect. Bernie defeated Gideon 73-25 and was ahead 22-2 at the end of the first quarter. I know Gideon has a win against South Pemiscot and Cooter. They also have losses to Clarkton, Senath, Malden, Gosnell and Bernie.

  • Several games scheduled for Friday have been postponed. Most of these cancellations are posted on the main page. Here is a list of the games postponed:

    Dexter at Woodland

    Fredericktown at St. Genevieve

    Poplar Bluff at Kennett

    Scott City at Chaffee

    South Iron at Van Buren

The Bernie / Advance has been rescheduled for February 11.

I have adjusted my schedule accordingly. The only big games left to go see tonight are Charleston at Sikeston and Portageville at Scott County Central. Could someone please verify Charleston will play at Sikeston tonight? I plan on traveling to Sikeston tonight to watch one of the biggest rivalries in Southeast Missouri. It will be my first opportunity to experience the rivalry.

  • I just read the article that Sikeston will play Blytheville, Ark. on Wednesday and Henry County, Tenn. on Saturday afternoon next week. I have two questions. 1. Where are the games going to be played at next week? 2. What time does the Henry County game start?

  • According to sbulldog4life, Sikeston has not lost a home game since 2007. This streak could be tested in the next week. Thanks for the information regarding the Sikeston games. I plan on attending the Sikeston games against Charleston, Blytheville and Henry County.

Does anyone have a suggestion regarding a motel in Sikeston just incase it keeps snowing. I know the Thrifty Inn has good rates. Has anyone stayed at the Thrifty Inn?

  • Final score Skeston 87 - Charleston 56. Sikeston played without starter Nuquavios Dixon who was out with a nagging injury. Good game. Four dunks. Maybe the long layoff helped the bulldogs?

No, they're not always like that. It's usually a heated rivalry, but, nothing close to what happened tonight is of the norm. The players and coaches kept it clean and it's a shame a few fans had to start stupid stuff.

    -- Posted by yah-yah on Fri, Jan 8, 2010, at 9:20 PM
  • drawmules, I was there. The rivalry is very intense but typically not this bad. It didn't help that our fans were sitting right above the Charleston ones. That was a night I won't soon forget.

  • I've never seen a fight at the Sikeston Field House. This is a first. But you have to credit Sikeston's administrators and public safety. They took care of the situation and that was the end of it.

-- Posted by semohoops on Fri, Jan 8, 2010, at 9:55 PM
  • Usually not. I recall an incident taking place in Charleston in 2007 during the Sikeston-Charleston game, but it was just a couple folks and the police officers were there in a matter of seconds to keep it from escalating. It didn't stop the game though.

    -- Posted by FarmBoy06 on Fri, Jan 8, 2010, at 10:07 PM

In regard to your comment about the large crowd for the Sikeston-Charleston game....the crowd is always that large. When the game is in Charleston, they normally shut the doors by 5:30 or so. If you are not there by then, you can't even get in the gym. The games are always exciting, but nothing like what happened tonight. It was unfortunate...actually ridiculous.

Also, I'm not sure if anyone answered your question, but the Henry County game starts at 2 with the JV game.

To respond to your question about the layoff for the Bulldogs....in this case, I think it helped. Sikeston went so far in the playoffs during the football season and only had 3 starters in practice until Thanksgiving, that Sikeston didn't really have time to put in many offensive sets or get their "basketball legs." I counted, at least, 5 different offensive sets last night. I think the fact that they didn't have time to work on their half court offense showed in the ND game....I think they went a long way in answering some of those questions tonight. I was glad to see that the layoff didn't hurt them....I'm sure the AD was as well. Kudos to Coach Holifield, Coach James, and Coach Schonhoff for having the Dogs ready to play after such a long layoff!!

Did I see the Bernie coaching staff at the Sikeston game tonight? Were they there watching Sikeston and/or Charleston? Any ideas on what they took from the game?

Wow what a game. The side attraction from the game actually doesn't surprise me. I remember back in the late 90's there was an incident where Charleston fans/students started throwing rocks at the buses carrying the football team, cheerleaders, and marching band members as they were leaving prompting the police to get involved. It's sad that a few overzealous fans can ruin a great game. They picked the wrong city to do that at, Sikeston DPS don't play lol.

I believe the Bernie coaching staff attended the game. I have know idea what they took away from the game. I know what I took away from the game. Sikeston is a Top 5 team in Southeast Missouri. Charleston is not a Top 5 team in Southeast Missouri. After watching last night's game, I believe Sikeston could beat Scott County Central. Sikeston is just that good this season. It's ashame they don't play.

-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Jan 9, 2010, at 12:15 PM
  • Drawmules,

As many games as you attend, I thought you might know the coaches and may talked to them. Anyway...I agree with you regarding Sikeston. They are going to be a handful for any team...IMO. I know that the Sikeston coaching staff knows Bernie can really shoot the ball, especially from the perimeter....not really any insight there because everyone knows that. Sikeston will have to continue to contest each shot, even the perimeter shots...especially from Bernie. I think Sikeston has done that pretty well all year, actually.

  • Rocket689

If I did talk to the coaches I wouldn't write their gameplan for the Sikeston game on semoball.com. I will say this much . . . It is going to take one heck of a gameplan for Bernie to play Sikeston close.

From what I have seen of Bernie they can't handle a lot of pressure. That being said, I'm not sure this game will even be close.
