New Madrid was Owls at the time period you are asking about. I like owls better than Eagles.
...don't know if they're all right. Just what I heard.
My mother was in the first graduating class of Kelly High School in 1958. Before that she attended Diehlstadt and their mascot was the Dragons. They actually had a really good basketball team their back in the day.
I believe I have some of your answers. I've included the current school district in which the nonexistent schools have consolidated.

That's all that I could gather right now. Hope this helps!
I have to agree with you Buck Owls does sound better than Eagles... It's different! Get a petition going!
Yep I totally agree. Its different than everybody else! I doubt that would work haha.
Doe Run Wildcats (consolidated into Farmington)
That's a great list Legend! Where did you find all that out? But just one minor correction: Blodgett was consolidated into the Kelly school district, not SCC.
I wish that Charleston & E. Prairie would consolidate to form Mississippi County High
Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn could be our mascot/logo.
Thanks legend Sure helped us out. Sure there is some more Reason we got to wondering was we were at a Morehouse reunion and they were know as the tigers, but had a bulldog painted in gym since the came into the Sikeston School system. Sikeston gave gym back to city of Morehouse and they couldn't get that bulldog off there wall quick enough
Interesting story I've heard over the years. This is all before my time, but back in the 1960s, Sikeston was given a choice of which school district they wanted to consolidate with Sikeston schools, Morehouse or Scott Central. They chose Morehouse. At least from an extracurricular activities point of view....oops!
Having said that, back in the 40s and 50s, Morehouse was an absolute powerhouse boys basketball team. Like, Puxico good. Unfortunately that has not sustained over the years. In my memory I can't think of any basketball players that have come out of Morehouse. Not one.
I recently heard that Jackson's original colors were blue or purple and their mascot was not an Indian. Is that true? Can anyone help me out?
Here's more mascots and some questions
Cobb Blue Jays and St Vincent's Seminary Spartans
Patton was the Rangers in the 1940's before they were the Panthers.
Catron Red Tide
Was Lilbourn East(b4 Howardville)the Spotlights?
Was Mine La Motte the Golden Eagles(in 1958-59?
Was Ellsinore the Red Birds(b4 East Carter)?
Any mascot information on Millersville, Commerce or Rombauer?
What website is everyone going to get this information?
Bluff was the Yellow Jackets before the Mules
No web site just sitting around one night and started to see how many we knew and people just kept adding on. The Legend came up with the most names.
@dadscatfood, after some research Jackson's first football teams were from the Jackson Military Academy and their colors were purple and gold, but have not heard of a mascot, probably cadets. The Jackson Military Building was sold in 1909 to use as high school. It sat where the math and science building sits now on the high school campus. The jackson heritage association has some good pics online of the 1906 Jackson Military football team in their retro uniforms and padding.
Legend has all those mascots correct. I did research and have every record and coach for all semo teams. Hayti central was never anything but tigers but I did see recently an article listing bears but I have a school annual to prove they were tigers all 20 years as a high school. Howardville was erred as east limbo urn in 65 and before high school was built at howardville they were at catron and did not regular uniforms but did wear hand me down jerseys that had brad and jolly on them and coach William Jackson told me before he passed he was lured from frenchmens baou to catron by Travis Howard with a promise of building a new school at howardville and this was the reason he came. He never said anything about red tide for mascot but said they did not have a mascot and he was the one who told me about those jerseys
Another interesting fact is Marquand now tigers has had four mascots, having been cowboys in the beginning (27-29) then bears (30-44) eagles and in 1950 changed to tigers, Rimbaud was wildcats, Kennett was originally redskins and school colors were navy and gold and was changed in 1918 to Indians and school colors due to screw up in uniforms for football coming in as black and gold so navy was changed
Skeeter Kell even screwing up orders in 1918!!! Joking.
Skeeter kell did not exist prior to 1955. Athletic apparel was bought from either cape or out of area. I am thinking almost all schools ordered direct from mfg before distributors came around
Wanted to explain the information I found on Central(Hayti). I looked at 4 yearbooks, The Centorian(1950,1952,1953 and 1955).1950 was online, said colors were maroon and white, also was member of SEMNIAA,no mascot mentioned;1952 was online,no mascot mentioned,1953 I purchased on EBAY,showed 2 individual players with uniforms showing the name bears, however the team picture had uniforms showing Hayti,no mention of bears or tigers in the yearbook(sent this yearbook to the Pemiscot His Soc in Caruthersville last year when I was finished with it).1955 yearbook had a tiger embossed on the cover,no mention of tigers in the yearbook.
Catron red tide I found in the Sikeston daily Standard(dont know the year) only saw it mentioned once(maybe it was because their uniforms at the time were red?)Have no idea.I researched MSHSAA handbooks which showed Catron was a member 1953-54 to 1957-58. I have purchased a 1959 Beacon yearbook for Lilbourn East,T B Howard was the principal,in the athletics section it shows the A team and coach WM Jackson in bold letters is the word SPOT the next page it show the B team and in bold letters is the word Lights. Does that mean the mascot was the Spot Lights? Cant tell what the colors were. Lilbourn East was in MSHSAA 1958-59 to 1963-64(the building then became Howardville HS)both were in the Lilbourn R-IV school dist. The school was listed with MSHSAA as East Lilbourn.
Anyone know when Blodgett changed from the Bears to the Indians or vice versa?
Gotta love the purple pups!
Did miner at any point have a school?
West Miner = Bulldogs
Sorry, couldn't resist!!
Clarkton used to be the stags before becoming the reindeer
The New Madrid Owls became the New Madrid Indians around 1960 when they absorbed Kewanee, who had Indians as their mascot. Later New Madrid became part of New Madrid County r-1.
You forgot the Tanner Tigers and Crowder Cotton Bolls.
Chaffee was the Bulldogs before becoming the Red Devils.
This is one of the most interesting and informative threads ever posted! Great job, everyone!
Excuse me! O’Bannon
