High School Basketball Forum: Big Day Today

Posted by sideline starter on Thu, Mar 14, 2013, at 7:08 AM:

Good luck to the Sikeston Bulldogs and Dexter Lady Bearcats as they both face quality competition at the Final Four today. Both teams and communities have represented well for SEMO throughout their chase for state titles and could use the support. If you cannot make it to Columbia, the Fox Sports Midwest Prep Zone as well as Prepcasts will each be doing broadcasts of the game online. Safe travels to all those driving to Columbia today and I will see you all up there.

  • Any predictions Sideline?

I think (maybe just hope) Sikeston wins a competitive game against Normandy and that Dexter fights hard but falls to Incarnate Word.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Thu, Mar 14, 2013, at 7:34 AM
  • I agree Sideline, I pick Sikeston, mainly due to SEMO pride, but the Dexter girls have a tough task with Incarnate, but I still hope they pull it out.

Yes, I'm rooting for Sikeston and Dexter!! I think Sikeston can win their game, but Dexter girls do have a tall task. This INCARNATE WORD played Jackson girls a couple of seasons ago and shut down the Lady Indians. Incarnate was ranked high in the nation that year.

  • Pull them through Sideline...can't make it up today , but Mrs Headhunt and my Ole Miss daughter are heading up as we speak....

Gonna be a tuff one.....gonna go with experience and playoff seasoning........Go Dogs....!!!!

  • Should be a good ballgame, and the other boys game should be very good.

-- Posted by Pchgrad on Thu, Mar 14, 2013, at 1:02 PM
  • This could be a product of me not following basketball as closely around the state as I usually do...but it seems to me like there are no big-name players in the Final Four this year. Usually there is at least one or two guys who are potential big-time players at the next level, particularly in the Class 5 games.

Nolan Berry for DeSmet is committed to Butler and I believe there is at least one other on that team who will go high D-1.

  • ^^^ Not to get us too far off topic, but I was thinking just yesterday...Missouri high school basketball fans have been incredibly fortunate the past several years. We've had the opportunity to watch:

    - 2 Big East POY's

    - 1 National POY

    - 1 potential #1 Draft Pick

    - SEVERAL notable college players

-- Posted by Bunk on Thu, Mar 14, 2013, at 2:54 PM

, then going back to starters....free throws and fouls on important folks will rule this one

  • 72-72 with 29 seconds left, Normandy ball.

    -- Posted by FarmBoy06 on Thu, Mar 14, 2013, at 5:11 PM
  • White of Normandy shooting FT's. Made them both to take a 3 point lead. But Sikeston ties it with a trey! Time-out Sikeston with :29 left!

  • Normandy shooting free throws with 6 seconds left. Makes the first.

  • Normandy up 2 with 6 seconds left. Sikeston ball. Another miracle maybe?

    -- Posted by FarmBoy06 on Thu, Mar 14, 2013, at 5:13 PM
  • Bad foul by Sikeston sends White back to the line. Makes both. Bulldog time-out with 6 seconds to play. Time for Hollifield to pull another rabbit out of his hat!

That was a great game.SHS fought hard.Normandy free throw shooting oh my GOD horrble.SHS TO and point shotting got them. Great GAME on both sides just when Normandy was looking they were running away SHS fought back.Chris Scott played a heck of a game and RAY had about 15 rebounds.

That didnt matter preach because SHS out scored them in the fourth. Normandy messed up when they were up by 12 and started to stall and SHS defense picked up nad created alot of turnovers.

    -- Posted by stlfan38 on Thu, Mar 14, 2013, at 5:23 PM
  • JT Jones only played 16 minutes today due to foul trouble and still scored 16 points. If he could've stayed out of foul trouble, no doubt Sikeston wins the game.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Thu, Mar 14, 2013, at 5:23 PM
  • Of course it mattered stlfan38. Had the Bulldogs shot better in the 3rd qtr., they likely win the game.

Normandy clutch free throws won that game by all means.LESS than 50% all day and hit them when they count.Almost a exact replay of SHS and IMagine Prep last year.Worst free throw shooters were hitting theirs. 25 TO is a season high for SHS.

    -- Posted by stlfan38 on Thu, Mar 14, 2013, at 5:25 PM

Makes no differance now its over. They will take that momemtum and take the energy to the court.CONGRATS to Normandy on a JOB well done taking down the number one team.LIKE Corey said they were coming in with a chip on their shouldewr to prove they belong and they do.One thing i must say The refs didnt let the game get out of hand. called some really close calls. Charges and blocks could have went either way

    -- Posted by stlfan38 on Thu, Mar 14, 2013, at 5:30 PM
  • i agree with the JT Jones statement. Hard to think how much better off the whole team would have been if they played better defense... Can someone tell me if Sikeston was actually playing that bad of defense, i only assume by the amount of free throws shot by the other team, I was not at the game

    -- Posted by stlfan38 on Thu, Mar 14, 2013, at 5:36 PM
  • First of all, congrats to Normandy! They played hard and very well. I was very impressed by how they handled themselves. Now to my point! What kind of official makes a call like that with 6 seconds left in OT????? Talk about an official decoding the game!!!!! It was a cheap hand check call 35 feet from the basket and it ultimately decided the game!!!!! I hate for the Dogs to lose a game in that manner! Don't get me wrong, Normandy played very well and made their free throws when they had to, but let the play go and let the PLAYERS decide the game!!!!! Hard to believe a "Final four" ref would make that call in that situation. I use the term "Final four ref" loosely!!! In my opinion, this game was the championship game.

There was some ticky tack both ways at times which lead to all the fouls but not really complaining its bit what cost us the game. If we had hit one of five or six open threes we had in the third or second quarters this game is over on that spectacular play in the fourth

  • what I fail to see out of any of you St. Louis basketball geniuses is an admission that it was a BS call. Yes, Sikeston turned the ball over way too much and yes they missed too many shots. The fact remains that it was a tie game with 6 seconds to go and a referee made an awful call to decide the game. You St. Louis guys, namely stlscott, said Sikeston wasn't very good and would lose big to Normandy. Once again you were proved wrong!

-- Posted by Brownbomber on Thu, Mar 14, 2013, at 5:57 PM

-- Posted by Brownbomber on Thu, Mar 14, 2013, at 6:45 PM
  • My argument is that they called it that way the whole game, did they not? I'm not trying to take sides here, but it's easier to blame the refs than to fess up to simply losing. A lot of other things like being cold from the outside, stopping Normandy's penetration and transition game and Jones in foul trouble made more of an impact to me. I may be wrong...

    -- Posted by StatChecker00 on Thu, Mar 14, 2013, at 6:46 PM
  • How did Republic win? They were down last time I checked. Take the lead and hold it, or score in the last few seconds?

I personally didn't think the call needed to be made. It was soft like Yah-Yah said. I am also obviously biased so I probably won't be swaying many people with my opinion. It was called and the game is over now. Can't dwell on it. I think it is a little petty to just bad mouth all of the teams still playing. They earned their spot playing today and that can't be taken away from them. Sikeston played their hearts and fell two points short. They can bounce back tomorrow, go home with a third place trophy, and the town and area will continue to be immensely proud of them as well as their accomplishments.

Their guards turned it over only 2 times but we still tried to guard them 60 feet from the basket. They drove in for lay up after lay up and we never stopped it.

    That's on us.

Nobody's fault we just got beat.

They earned it. But to make a call on a questionable touch foul that far away from the basket with 6 seconds to go in a tie game , in OT no less, is ridiculous.

  • Preacher I think you may be the ignorant one, semo fans are poor losers, did you really think you would make any noise? Face facts, outside of semo you are irrelevant basketball wise this year.

  • I think our bench did very well. Chris Scott looked good. I think that it was an exciting game and loved every minute of it except the losing part. Normandy guys did not play dirty and they were fast. I hope they win tomorrow.

  • Eminence wins a state championship, Sikeston and Oran make it to the final four, as well as the Dexter girls. Yeah, Pchgrad that's real irrelevant, my twice-banned, know-it-all friend. How could I have ever been ignorant enough to debate with your all-knowing self?

  • Dean, while I agree with most of your post, I must disagree with some of it. Yes it was called a foul. Yes the kid had to make the free throws. I've already given the kid credit for his clutch shooting at the line. I officiated high school basketball for 10 years and ill tell you that, as an official, you don't make a call like that in that situation. Period!!! Secondly, the process of which officials make it to the final four is a joke in and of itself. The system is flawed. The "best" officials aren't there every year. If that were the case, most of the same guys would be there every year. You wouldn't see different faces every year. Don't take this in any way to mean that the officials cost Sineston the game. I'm not saying that. Turnovers ayes a huge part in it. I'm just saying a "GOOD" official knows the situation of the game and would never make a call like that to decide the game.

  • Preach:

Love the scripture, we need more of that on here!

Dustin Ward's earlier post this year about the difference in the way games are ref'd in the north and west came too be noticed with the hand check call.. Actually it's called better in the north and west then down here in the southeast. they have let it get out of control down here so when are teams get to Columbia they can have trouble adjusting and they only have like half a game to adjust. Sikeston did not lose for that reason though. turnovers, missed shots, foul trouble beat them and a good Normandy team.

-- Posted by BBfanatic on Fri, Mar 15, 2013, at 8:34 AM
  • So Brownbomber, you hold the opinion that the rules change in the last minute of a game? If so, I wouldn't want you calling our games. The crew yesterday called the game closer to the rule book than I've seen most of the year. They called the same fouls the entire game. You could tell the players weren't used to that. But that's they way it should be all the time.

I say a "GOOD" official doesn't care what the situation of the game is. He calls ALL the violations ALL the time. If he doesn't then he in fact IS deciding the game by allowing rules to be broken.

-- Posted by oldroundballer on Fri, Mar 15, 2013, at 8:41 AM
  • I just wish the foul had been sooner so we could have had a better look at the end

-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Fri, Mar 15, 2013, at 8:44 AM
  • They never gave up and they had an opportunity to win the game, you can't ask for a whole lot more. When do they play next?

Oldroundballer, if you thought that was good officiating the entire game, then old is the appropriate word to describe you. This isn't 1950 anymore. If they called it the way you wanted it, there would be a whistle on every possession. We got a glimpse of your brand of basketball in the LN-Republic game. SNOOZER!!! Seriously, I've seen paint drying with more action than that.

The game is changing and the officials need to adjust to the pace and physicality of the game. We don't need one hand on a player that doesn't affect the player's movement being called fouls EVER. We don't need blocking fouls called when the offensive player creates the contact when the defensive player is trying to avoid contact EVER. There needs to be a lot more no calls because the game is better when the kids are allowed to determine the game. If the call is questionable, then it should be a no call. If the ref can't decide if it's a block or charge, then it's a no call.

  • Amen!!! ^^^^^^^^^^^^

-- Posted by Brownbomber on Fri, Mar 15, 2013, at 9:18 AM
  • If the outcome had been different, I doubt we'd be discussing officiating styles.

    -- Posted by FarmBoy06 on Fri, Mar 15, 2013, at 9:26 AM
  • I agree with you besides the block charge call if there is enough contact then make the call one way or the other, might not agree with it but with that much contact i think something has to be called.

The officiating was poor in all three games that I saw. The refs determined the outcome of the LN-Republic game as well on a terrible call.

"The officiating was poor in all three games that I saw."

    Of course it was.

-- Posted by Captain Awesome on Fri, Mar 15, 2013, at 9:37 AM
  • I will be the first one to admit but I don't know usually what they call unless its something simple like a walk or very obvious foul other than that I'm clueless I always ask my son but I do know on Dexter they called a foul on them the girl no where near fouled her but it wouldn't of helped Dexter anyway. So my post is pointless!! Lol

-- Posted by TFA on Fri, Mar 15, 2013, at 9:41 AM
  • Like I said before, if the kid drives to the basket and scores, you tip your hat and say good game. But the fact remains, the ref make a VERY questionable call at a pivotal point in the game. I'm done discussing it now. Lets take care of Liberty North today! Go Dogs!

-- Posted by Brownbomber on Fri, Mar 15, 2013, at 9:47 AM
  • Norman, I don't disagree with a lot of what you said. And I don't know anything about the 1950s but I can tell you a lot about the exciting high scoring up and down games of the 70s, 80s, and 90s. I think the game is ugly now and needs to be cleaned up. The reason a whistle could be blown every play is because the current group of players have been allowed to play rough their entire lives and that's all they know. Younger players could be taught to play cleaner and eventually the games would become more enjoyable to watch again.

I personally don't like watching ball handlers get mugged and shooters get hit and rebounders get jumped on top of. I like watching good quick ball movement. Good legal screens with quick cuts. Good rebound positioning with quick outlet passes and fast breaks. I also like good smart defense with your feet and not hands. It's become more a battle of strength and jumping ability than skill and intelligence. I'd like to see the latter have more meaning again.

If everyone wants more contact to be allowed we need to change the rules because the current rules don't allow for a lot of what goes on now.

And I'll always say the rules, whatever they are, should always be enforced equally throughout the entire game. The "situation" or "who the player is" should have no bearing. This crap of the officials deciding the game is bogus. The only way the officials decide a game is if they DON'T enforce the rules equally and consistently. If the do so then the players do actually get to decide it.

Farmboy is right on again. Officiating never seems to come up when the desired outcome happens. :)

Have a great day and good luck to both SEMO teams today.

  • Sounds like it was Sikeston's own fault they lost , cant expect to win with so many turnovers and fouls. Overall maybe they were just too aggressive in defense this year. I've seen JT Jones battle foul trouble in many important games this year, along with others. I never took a charge in high school but the guys around were so good at defense that I never had to.

Also, I don't appreciate all the hate that is delivered toward Sikeston from this area. They were down 12 with about 6 minutes left and the posters had already started celebrating, ON SEMOBALL, which is where I happened to get updates from.(Thanks btw Farm)

It sucks that Sikeston had to lose because after that comeback, I'm sure those same posters looked stupid during the OT. But Sikeston lost... so those posters got what they wanted in the end, I know I'm kicking a dead horse but please negative posters, lighten up, regardless of whatever Sikeston has done to you to force gloating at our losses.

More than anything, Im happy that Sikeston hadn't lost pride in who they are. Didn't play great, or even good but when their backs were against the wall, they responded as well as any team in the state could have, being down 12 wit 6 minutes left.

Tough loss, still good knowing that the seniors are leaving with a ring.

Just saw a classy post from Normandy guard Kevin McLemore on Twitter wishing Vashawn good luck and saying he was coming to watch Sikeston play today. "@Humb1e_Hungry10: Fenna go eat then go watch bro play Goodluck @VashawnMr573" Also, I thought Normandy's coach's comments were very classy and respectful in the Standard Democrat article.

I thought the game was called fairly, but you can't expect to win with so many turnovers. I'VE ALSO WANT TO SAY THAT POST CAN BE TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT... @HEADHUNT....If you could've heard me say."Normandy is moving on" you would've realized that my tone was full of dissapointment like I felt when Charleston loss toi Madison, I was rooting for Sikeston man!
