WBB,good game tonight but i respectfully disagree i think Eminence and South Iron you played earlier in the year were better teams IMO!congrats bernie on a good season baker was very very good tonight.

-- Posted by porchswing on Wed, Feb 27, 2013, at 10:19 PM
  • First off, I want to say congrats to Coach Joe Shoemaker. The way he managed tonight's game given the cicrumstances of your two leading scorers playing virtually only half the game like Terry Hicks said it truly remarkable. Coach of the year IMO. The way Oran's underclassmen stepped up was huge tonight. If you would have told me before the season started that Oran won a playoff game when Moore fouled out, I would have laughed.

Secondly, it's not even the first of March and not even one team is still playing in the almighty bootheel.

Uncle i understand you didn't say anything about Winona and i am only useing Winona as a point to say the shot you took at bootheel basketball as a whole can only have any merit if Oran beats the team that knocked out the last bootheel team if you lose to them than you just had the good fortune as to play them after the bootheel team!

-- Posted by porchswing on Wed, Feb 27, 2013, at 11:03 PM

-- Posted by BBfanatic on Wed, Feb 27, 2013, at 10:46

@WBB, i'm not saying this isn't true but our friend BBfanactic and the rest of his southern comrades have been making irrational comments toward Oran's team all year when they haven't even seem them play once and we all know they'll be on the couch Saturday afternoon while Oran's still playing so take this all for what it's worth.

On the other hand, you seem to be a pretty sane/rational guy that enjoys high school basketball as much as I do. With that said, good luck Saturday and may the best team win.

-- Posted by Uncle Charlie on Thu, Feb 28, 2013, at 3:34 AM
  • My perspective on Winona is they have a complete team with a true center, star forward, good 3-point shooter and great defense with an outstanding trap. It will be interesting to see how Winona plays against a team that has a center of similiar size in Oran. Winona looked like a team that could win it all in Class 2 to me, but I hear there are some very good teams in other regions of the state in Class 2 this season. I am confident Salisbury is pretty good. I don't know much about West Platte, but have heard good things.

  • Pierce City boys defeated Crane 37-35 in Class 2 sectional Wednesday night.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Thu, Feb 28, 2013, at 4:47 AM
  • It seems Heyring would guard the 6'8 kid so that would leave Schlosser on the 6'4 kid, maybe this height disadvantage will send Oran into a zone. At the same time however, Advance had 2 6'4 or 6'5 kids and Oran dealt with them just fine.. I can't imagine the Winona kid being better than Barr other than height

-- Posted by Thot McGee on Thu, Feb 28, 2013, at 8:09 AM
  • I am pretty sure that had the roles been reversed and Bernie had won and Oran had lost, BBfanatic would not have come on and made a dig at Oran like the one Uncle Charlie directed at Bernie. Other fans, even a couple from Bernie, might have, but I don't see BBfanatic doing so.

I'm proud of Bernie's season. I enjoyed watching the boys play this year. All three seniors came through for us when needed. David Baker has developed into a great player. I was also impressed with the improvements that Joey Walker and B.J. Jennings showed this year. Very good season for the Mules this year, and I expect us to be back in the hunt next year as well.

    -- Posted by bluemules89 on Thu, Feb 28, 2013, at 9:01 AM
  • Uncle:

If you will look at my post above that one you will see that I congrats Oran. It was your dig on the southern teams that fires me up. Just because some may post and make you mad doesnt mean you take it out on all southern teams. I have never stated Oran was not good because they are and we would have loved to play them because thats how we roll @ Bernie. Be a graceful winner. the tung is as that of a 2 edged sword says God. Wish you all the best. prepare for the big man and a good zone def and maybe you will make the Big Trip that we all long for!

Uncle,I understand the debate that has been going back and forth all year i just think your shot was a little premature. The class one's were put out by the state champion the class three was put out by the state champion the class two was put out by Winona wich you get the chance to play saturday if you blow them out then that will make a statement if you lose or win a close one than the debate will continue.I don't know what is going to happen and i am not taking sides just trying to follow the debate logically!

-- Posted by porchswing on Thu, Feb 28, 2013, at 10:46 AM
  • @porchswing, thank you for your obvious facts into how the playoff system in Missouri works.

@Bluemules, true but this is how the cookie crumbles this year.

@BBfanactic, I understand yaeger and whoever else comes out of the woodwork for Bernie when the going is good is obviously gone now and your taking much of the wrath. None of which was directed at you specifically until you made the bold comment you will beat an Oran team that you haven't seen play. That aggrevates me not because I think Oran will win by no means but because you haven't even seen them play once this year.

-- Posted by Uncle Charlie on Thu, Feb 28, 2013, at 12:51 PM
  • Oran is a very good team and play very hard. I have never seen Winona play. I have heard they are a tough team but what team wouldnt be at this time of year. I will say i watched Bernie play a couple of times this year and i really like their energy and confidence. They have a great team and they have a great coach. Too bad it wasnt Oran vs Bernie because that would be a good matchup. I wish the best luck to the eagles they have a tough game ahead.

    -- Posted by gomizzou05 on Thu, Feb 28, 2013, at 12:54 PM
  • I think Oran will matchup better with Winona than Bernie did simply because Oran has taller players than Bernie. One of the reasons Winona may have a loss to Doniphan is because Doniphan has several tall players and matched up with Winona well.

  • Uncle Charlie, I have no problems with you in general and totally understand the aggravation with some comments that have been made. Even as a Bernie fan, I have been irritated by some of the comments made in support of the Mules. I just thought it would have been better to use a comment of one of our more boastful "fans" instead of BBfanatic's. I didn't read his comment that you quoted as a dig at Oran. I read it as a defensive reply to your comment. If it had been a different poster, I might have, and given the history, I can certainly see where you might have taken it differently. Unless I have missed it, I haven't seen BBfanatic post comments that were disrespectful to other teams as some have. That's where I was coming from.

I have not seen Oran, but I have no doubt they are a very good team. I wish Oran the best and hope to see a good game on Saturday.

  • I'll probably make the trip to Dexter to watch Scott County Central-Eminence Saturday at 1 p.m. and then drive to Farmington to watch Winona-Oran at 6 p.m. and the Neelyville-New Haven girls at 7:45 p.m.

  • I think what Uncle Charlie is talking about is all the talk back this year that Oran might be the 6 seed in the Class 2 District 1 tournament. I will admit that I thought the winner of C2D1 would advance to the Final Four but I also want to point out that I've said numerous times that I didn't think we had a great team in that district. There were several very good teams and it was more of a case where teams are all evenly matched. That came true when the 4 lost a close game to the 5 and the 5 beat the 1 and the 5 almost beat the 2. There were 5 good teams in that district but no great team. Oran is still playing. All those teams are at home. So they can brag a little. But I will stick by my earlier comment that we don't have a great team in this area this year and there won't be a team in Southeast Missouri that wins a state title this year. I thought Leopold had the best chance and they didn't even make it out of their district.

Eminence might win a state title in Class 1 if you want to count them as being out of the southeast Missouri region. But I would say there is at least one team favored over Eminence to win Class 1.

  • I believe that Bernie actually overachieved this year. If you look at them, they are not that impressive. Winona was huge. People overlooked them because they are out west and don't play local teams. But they were pretty good.

Best of luck to both teams on saturday.

  • Based on what i witnessed last year I will be somewhat surprised if Drexel doesn't win Class 1. But that's why they play the game.

Cape has three good players but no really a team plan on how to best utilize them. Cox was much better last year when he wasn't the primary focus

Cape has a lot of raw talent, Scott. They are really young also. They will be better next year having most of their guys back other than Evans. I don't want to condemn Church. It isn't my place and I don't keep up with them enough to have an opinion on that sort of matter. I will say that Sikeston has played very smart basketball tonight and exploited Cape on both offense and defense.

It's not that Church can't figure it out I just don't think they ever figured it out this year.

Bobby, they would have been against Sikeston the last two years. They would not have made the Final Four in 2011 and if they got out of District 1, they probably would have lost to Desoto or Imagine.

The part mentioning Desoto and Imagine is about 2012.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Thu, Feb 28, 2013, at 8:59 PM
  • Yeah...beat me to it sideline. I don't recall Cape even being that great in the SEMO area, let alone going to state.

    -- Posted by FarmBoy06 on Thu, Feb 28, 2013, at 9:01 PM
  • Fully aware of that! I believe they beat Sikeston in those yrs correct me if I'm wrong. Who would u rather play Desoto or CBC in sectionals

    -- Posted by BobbyKite22 on Thu, Feb 28, 2013, at 9:02 PM
  • Not sure who Mike Church is. Centrals coach is Drew Church and the kids will not play for him. He has a very stubborn mind and won't adapt to the talent. You can't draft in high school so you have to be able to adapt a system that fits your talent. Just my opinion..

Sikeston went undefeated in 2011 Bobby and Cape did beat Sikeston by two I believe in 2012 at Cape. No guarantee they beat them in a rematch at the Field House. And just because Desoto isn't CBC doesn't mean that Cape could have beat them.

Not matter what anyone says about officials costing the team a game( I know it shoulda stupid and it usually is) but that Sikeston Cape game last year was the worst home cooking I have ever seen. I'm not saying it was fixed, but I'm saying they call the whole game tight and then the last five minutes when Sikeston is coming back the line they didn't blow obvious borderline flagrant fouls. Long story short Cape wouldn't have beat Sikeston in 11 or 12.

I did see those Cape teams play. You are choosing to read only what you want to read. Sikeston beat Cape by 21 and 18 in the 2011 season and went undefeated on their way to a state title. Cape was not going to beat them if they were in Class 4. That eliminates one of your two Final Fours. If Cape is in Class 4 last year, they have to play Sikeston at Sikeston to even win districts. There wasn't a large talent disparity between those two teams. Tough to win at Sikeston. I'm just saying I wouldn't pick them to have won. If they did win, Desoto had the size and shooters to pick Cape apart last year. If they get by that, Imagine would have been way too athletic for them. I saw all of those teams play multiple times including Cape. Just providing some informed analysis.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Thu, Feb 28, 2013, at 9:14 PM
  • Rob Kite Cape isnt ever any good, and Sikeston would destroy them in any of the past couple years, its not close, get rid of that coach, he isn't any good period.

    (2) Park Hills Central 78 (6) Potosi 49
