High School Basketball Forum: 1000 pts.

Posted by gostlrams on Mon, Feb 11, 2013, at 9:39 AM:

Will someone please explain the significance of scoring 1000 pts. in a high school career? I can understand if it is done during a player's junior and senior years, but with some getting a large amount of playing time as a sophomore, or even a freshman, this doesn't seem to be that much of an accomplishment.

  • It's an accomplishment in itself just to make the varsity team at most schools as a freshman or sophmore. It's quite a milestone.

  • David Baker for Bernie should reach 1000 within the next 3 games and I believe he only scored 2 points his sophmore year. quite an accomplishment.

  • 1,000 points is a pretty good milestone. I bet you'd be surprised at how small the list is at most schools.

  • It's quite an accomplishment but if you notice it's happens more at smaller schools because most of the kids that are good play 4 years of varsity and not just being on varsity but getting alot of minutes as freshman. I think PB has only had 4 guys to reach 1000 or more.

  • Kevonte Mitchell is 17 points shy to getting to 1000 points.

  • BIGELW nailed it...This usually always happens at small schools. Much bigger accomplishment at larger schools where most freshmen and sophmores play JV.

  • I agree it is typically a bigger accomplishment at larger schools; however, it shouldn't be discounted at smaller schools that traditionally have a lot of kids on the basketball teams. At those schools, you see freshmen and sophomores basically playing JV as well.

  • Yah ifya do the math and say 25 games a year thats an avg of 10, 13.3, 20, or 40pts per game based on how many years varsity ya play. I wouldve loved to avg doubledigits ANY of the 2 yrs i made varsity but couldnt quite take it to the next level haha!!

  • It is an accomplishment! The school the I attended in Illinois has the leading scorer in the history of Illinois Basketball. He scored over 1000 pts each in two of his years of high school and finished his career with 3,358 pts for his high school career.

  • Clearwater sophomore Lexis Morris reached 1,000 points in about a season and a half. If she stays healthy her entire career, it'll be interesting to see her total.

  • All i ask is if other kids accross the area score their 1000th point they need to be recognized also

  • I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of these 1,000 point scorers we hear about count their JV points and Varsity points.

  • Yah i cant remember too much fanfare over others doing this in the past. I guess its up to each school's AD to promote it and get it in the paper.

  • A few years ago, Leopold had a scorer reach 2,000 points in his career.

  • That player you are referring to counted JV points as well. Heard it from the coach himself after he did it. He did not score 2000 at the varsity level, he did get well over a 1000 and maybe 1500 though.

However, I would say that none of the players I know have counted JV points when reaching a 1000. Coaches know that u are not supposed to count JV points.

More than anything it shows consistency, big school or small. As for the guys who play a lot as freshman, most of them get their 1000th their Junior year. Not all but most of them do

  • It's really hard to average 20 a game.. To be truly impressive I think a 4 year starter's milestone should be 1500, a 3 year starter about 1200, a 2 year starter 1,000 is very awesome

  • Daniel Presley a 4 year starter at Risco was the schools all time leading scorer with a total of 2078 career points on varsity level! He graduated in 2000. Risco also had two players reach the 1000 point milestone out of the same class with Luke Bixler and Chris Pavy last season.

  • I would say 2000 is quite exceptional, close to 20ppg over 4yrs! I wonder what ricky frazier or otto or tucker or niemczyk etc had. Course ricky had no three pt line back in the day and his shorts were very short!!
