Key Games (Feb. 4-9)
Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Mon, Feb 4, 2013, at 12:22 AM:

First of all, let me say congratulations to my beloved Baltimore Ravens, Super Bowl 47 Champions!

Now back to our regularly scheduled Key Games thread. As we wind down the regular season, we have a full slate of big conference match-ups, rivalry games, and conference tournaments this week.

The Ozark Foothills Conference Tournament (OFCT) continues this week after kicking off last Saturday at Neelyville High School. The finals will be played at Three Rivers Community College on Friday night.

The Tri-County Conference Tournament tips off Monday night at Delta C-7 High School in Deering. #8 Cooter plays #9 Southland for the honor of being #1 Holcomb's sacrificial lamb the next night. Risco is the #2 seed, but Clarkton and Delta C-7 will be looking to pull an upset. I don't have the schedule or times of these games, so if someone could post those, I would be grateful.

The Mineral Area Activities Association (MAAA) Tournament also began last Saturday in Ste. Genevieve. The rest of the tournament will be played at Mineral Area College. Farmington is #1 seed and Park Hills Central is the #2 seed. Those two teams should meet for their rubber match in the finals, but we will keep an eye on things up north and report how it goes later in the week on this thread.

As always, feel free to post any other key games you feel I've overlooked along with scores, predictions, corrections, analysis, etc. I am always amazed at the hundreds of posts this thread continues to attract and thank each one who chooses to read and post their thoughts. BuckMajor will chose some of these Key Games for his weekly PickEm thread and I am grateful to have a role in that also.

All games begin at 6:00 p.m. unless otherwise noted. Now get out and see some of these Key Games!

Update from MAAA tourney:

Potosi over Valle Catholic 71 to 53 (upset)

Arcadia Valley over North Co. 72 to 60

SG over Caledonia 67 to 26

I can't make it to any of the games, have to stay in St. Louis the next couple nights. May see if I can pick up a radio stream somewhere....

Willie is really sick. He wasn't feeling well Friday for the Twin Rivers game, and it's gotten worse over the weekend. I heard he will still try and play tonight. I know he wasn't at school all day today. So we will see how this goes. We also have another JV player sick, and one out with a possible concussion.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Tue, Feb 5, 2013, at 6:45 PM

So since he wasn't at school today, doesn't that mean he can't play tonight?

Just a thought on the last 3 matchups between Holcomb/Hayti/Bernie.

Holcomb 56 Hayti 44 (Holcomb up 20 w 4 to go)

Bernie 60 Holcomb 38

Hayti 58 Bernie 46

Good luck figuring that out.Sadly 2 teams are going to get the short end of a draw of straws at the seed meeting tomorrow.

-- Posted by No sir on Tue, Feb 5, 2013, at 9:16 PM

that is going to be tough trying to figure out the seedings, but if I had to do it, I would give Hayti the 1, Bernie the 2, Holcomb the 3, because Bernie beat Holcomb on their floor, Holcomb beat Hayti on a neutral floor, and Hayti earlier in the season beat Holcomb on Holcomb's floor.

-- Posted by kdjones on Tue, Feb 5, 2013, at 9:20 PM

Hayti is TOUGH at home

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Tue, Feb 5, 2013, at 9:23 PM

I thought Hayti beat Holcomb and what's up with poplar bluff only winning by 1

-- Posted by yaeger on Tue, Feb 5, 2013, at 9:24 PM

Hayti did beat Holcomb earlier in the year but people are only counting when Holcomb beat them in the BCHT apparently. Based off record against District opponents, Hayti deserves the 1 seed.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Tue, Feb 5, 2013, at 9:25 PM

Hayti did beat Holcomb eaier in the season at Holcomb, they lost to Holcomb them in the Bloomfield Tournament

-- Posted by kdjones on Tue, Feb 5, 2013, at 9:26 PM

Hayti beat Holcomb @Hayti..

Lastride67 you missed the first half when Jimmerson got a T, also. Guess Coach Day needs to address the reaction of some of his players, as well.

-- Posted by DW in KenMO on Tue, Feb 5, 2013, at 9:47 PM

It's Jimerson. That's his first T of the year, also the first T for any NMCC player this year.

Sorry about that, Maxpreps on the New Madrid site has it listed as Jimmerson with 2 m's. Guess the coach put one too many on the website by accident. I was just following his lead. I believe that was Cameron Harper's first technical this year. Not a stat I keep up with, though.

The refs who did the ktown nmcc game needs to be fired by

The state ray Charles could of called that game better im a Kennett fan but nmcc also got bad calls to.. my advice to them is to stick with little league basketball

-- Posted by Fathead73 on Tue, Feb 5, 2013, at 10:00 PM

It's okay, can't always trust Maxpreps.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Tue, Feb 5, 2013, at 10:03 PM

NOBODY has better control of their team than Coach Day. He is a class act and his teams play hard. Jimerson is a great kid and will learn a lesson from his mistake. He wasn't disrespectful and may have chirped a bit to long, but it wasn't anything big. Refs didn't decide this game. Fact is, NMCC was the tougher team and it wasn't even close. They killed Kennett on the boards and deserved the win, PERIOD.

Eminence beats South Iron on a buzzer beater 58-56!St.louis University scout at the game looking at keeling for Eminence but was more impressed with 6'3 sophmore from south iron great class one game these two teams are ready for districts!

-- Posted by porchswing on Tue, Feb 5, 2013, at 10:10 PM

Both teams played hard, good game

-- Posted by ktown 5150 on Tue, Feb 5, 2013, at 10:11 PM

indianchief, you have good hearing aids. I couldn't hear what he did or didn't say, just know he got a T. And yes, the Eagles did out rebound the Indians.

-- Posted by DW in KenMO on Tue, Feb 5, 2013, at 10:11 PM

Bernie couldnt hit shots, Hayti did. Its that simple.

-- Posted by BBfanatic on Tue, Feb 5, 2013, at 10:18 PM

DW in KenMo,

Why the smart remark? I just wanted to make the point that Coach Day is a class act and his players carry themselves well. To act as though the refs decided this game takes away from a great effort by NMCC on the road. One more letter Jimerson did get was a W.

-- Posted by indianchief on Tue, Feb 5, 2013, at 10:21 PM

Haha good one indianchief. Your a class act man, and so is coach vaugh. He is a heck of a coach, and Kennett always plays very tough games. Good luck in districts!

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Tue, Feb 5, 2013, at 10:27 PM

I didn't say the refs decided this game. What have you been reading? I didn't say it, maybe somebody else did, but not me. As far as the smart remark, it was a joke. I'm not the one who saw the need to capitalize certain words. You have such a love for New Madrid, your name should be Big Bird instead of indianchief. I would've liked to have seen Kennett win, but it was a great game, regardless.

DW in KenMo,

I was referring to several comments I read on here not just yours. Let's be clear, I'm a Kennett Indian fan and NOBODY supports them more me. With that said, I just wanted to clear the air and state that NMCC was deserving of their victory.

-- Posted by indianchief on Tue, Feb 5, 2013, at 10:38 PM

Well, not mine period. I never once stated anything about the officiating contributing to the loss. I went back and read my previous posts just to see if my bad memory had kicked in or something. I'm glad you are an Indian supporter. NMCC has a very good team and they deserved this win. Every run Kennett put on them, they countered. I think Jimerson is probably the best guard in Semo. And to think he's just a sophomore. If he's not, he is very close.

-- Posted by DW in KenMO on Tue, Feb 5, 2013, at 10:43 PM

Wow,sounds like a great night of basketball you can tell districts are upon us emotions are running high we all love highscool basketball thats why we come to this site!

T-CCT Semi-Finals, Thursday, Feb. 7, at Delta C-7 High School (Deering, MO):

1. #1 Holcomb vs. #5 North Pemiscot, 7:00 p.m.

2. #2 Risco vs. #3 Clarkton, 8:30 p.m.

Holcomb shouldn't have much trouble with North Pem, but the Risco-Clarkton game intrigues me. The Tigers have already rolled arch-rival Clarkton twice, but Risco struggled with Campbell tonight. I like Risco to win the game, but they better come ready to play.

OFCT Championship: #1 Clearwater vs. #3 Doniphan, Friday, Jan. 8 at TRCC, 8:30 p.m. This will be a re-match of last year's finals. I like Clearwater as they've already beat the Dons this season and are on quite a roll right now, but should be a close game.

PHC beat Potosi 53 to 43, setting up another re-match between the Blackcats and Rebels Friday.

the kennett/new madrid game was just like the super bowl or a heavyweight fight. great effort by both teams, Jimerson is a great player, but I think Kevonte Mitchell was the best player in that game, and I think he is the better guard right now, just my opinion. he proved to those who said he did not have a good outside shot wrong. kennett players were just as well behaved as the new madrid player, both teams played hard and wanted the win, no refs decided the game, that 12-0 run to start the game, the mistake of letting a minute run off the clock before fouling at the end of the game, and kennett's inability to crash the boards decided this game.

Most interesting game tonight could be Oran/SCC. I believe SCC finds a way to win tonight on their home floor. This win, if they succeed in getting it could propel them going into district. They have been a roller coaster but don't think for a second they can't get hot and win that district on their home floor. If they lose tonight, season may be over.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 10:20 AM

Hey Preach, who ya got in the OFC final C'water or Doniphan? C'water has won 9 in a row including last Friday's win over the Dons. MSHSAA has C'water at 18-3, IMO they will be 19-3 after tonight! Any idea when the Class 3 District 2 seedings will be out? I seen that Class 3 District 1 and 3 are out already.

-- Posted by tooldogging on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 10:43 AM

Tooldogging, I like Clearwater to win in a close one. Doniphan has Patterson, but just not enough guard play. Plus your Tigers are just hot right now. I don't know when the C3D2 seedings come out, but surely Clearwater will get the #1 seed.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 10:52 AM

I don't understand why people are still doubting Oran against SCC. Oran won the first two games against SCC by 30 and 26, the second time being at SCC. Why would it be all that different in the third game?

-- Posted by sideline starter on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 1:22 PM

I was thinking the same thing sideline. Oran is just flat out better than SCC this year.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 2:39 PM

Because sideline, you're talking about 14-18 year old kids. That's why. We will see i guess.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 2:52 PM

Seems like a weak reasoning.

Class 3 District 2 seeds on Saturday, tooldogging

I'll be posting updates tonight from the OFC championship: www.twitter.com/darsports

-- Posted by DARsports on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 3:30 PM

haha, well sideline, you obviously don't know nearly as much about 14-18 year old kids as you do about basketball.

But there's more to it as far as my reasoning goes.

1-They have already played 3 times. No one can argue that it's tough to defeat a team 3 times in 1 season. Yes Oran has defeated SCC soundly. Yes Oran has clearly been the better team.

2-It's the second time SCC will have played Oran at SCC.

3-SCC has been up and down. But the talent level is still high enough for them to get hot and play well. They played Holcomb to 10 points last week and Oran is no better than Holcomb.

4-Oran won by 4 to a good Bloomfield squad earlier this week. SCC is every bit as good as Bloomfield.

That being said, if Oran plays up to their capabilities, they, more than likely will win this 3rd match up. But, maybe, just maybe sideline, SCC plays up to their capability. Again, we will see.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 3:35 PM

How do you know Oran is no better than Holcomb? Again, seems like you are investing in creating a narrative and picking with gut instead of head. SCC has lost to Holcomb as well as Chaffee (who Oran has defeated multiple times in recent weeks), Oran has proven to be much more consistent over the course of the season, and has already handily defeated SCC twice. I don't see how one could reasonably say they think SCC should win. Can they? Yes. It is possible but I wouldn't count on it. Oran is built in a way that puts them at an advantage against a team like SCC. And saying that it is 14-18 year olds playing isn't a reason for anything. If so, you could justify Bell City over Sikeston with that reasoning but that doesn't make it any more likely.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 3:46 PM

Is Banks playing agian for SCC?

-- Posted by deervalley on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 3:51 PM

I think SCC could defeat the Eagles tonight, but the real question is: If Oran wins, will SCC run to the locker room to avoid shaking hands, like the conference tournament when they wouldn't stay to accept the second place trophy on their home floor?

-- Posted by gostlrams on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 3:54 PM

If Oran was south of Dexter this conversation would not exist.

-- Posted by Uncle Charlie on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 4:11 PM

I don't agree with that Charlie. Oran is every bit as good as the southern class 2 schools. My opinion would be the same if Holcomb or Hayti were in the same position as Oran is tonight.

Sideline you're disappointing me. First of all. I have nowhere stated that SCC SHOULD win tonight. In fact, we have both agreed that Oran should win. Read everything I say and you will see that.

Secondly, the age has nothing to do with the talent level of a team. My reference to age has more to do with motivation, or lack thereof, focus and other intangibles.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 4:19 PM

You act as if I'm being totally disrespectful to Oran sideline. I can offer up different viewpoints that, just because they may not have your stamp of approval, doesn't mean they don't make sense.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 4:25 PM

You seem like you are trying to write a narrative before a game has happened.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 4:29 PM

And the season won't be over for SCC if they lose tonight. This game matters very little for either school outside of being a good test before districts. It won't kill or make anyone's season.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 4:34 PM

You have, yourself written many "narratives" on Semoball. Which, by the way, I enjoy reading. But you need to be careful not to think you're the only one on here with a little knowledge.

I said it "MAY" be over if they lose.

However, in the interest of discussion, I will debate with you your last point. I believe that, possibly, if the SCC loses tonight it could be the "straw that breaks the camel's back", so to speak. Remember, I said possibly. With the district being at SCC, they have a shot regardless of what happens.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 4:44 PM

-- Posted by birdfan on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 9:06 PM

What was the final score, localfan?

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 9:06 PM

Nd just beat PB 51 to 50. ND missed 5 free throws in the last 2 minutes.

-- Posted by thunderstick on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 9:07 PM

53-51 Jackson

-- Posted by localfan on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 9:08 PM

Tough loss for the Eagles localfan. But the real problem seems to me that NMCC spotted Jackson a 16 point halftime lead.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 9:18 PM

Garan evans didnt play for cape tonite, anyone know the scoop?

-- Posted by cirithungol17 on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 9:37 PM

Coach's decision, cirithungol. Not sure the details but I figured that's all we need to know anyway.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 9:39 PM

Oak Ridge over Chaffee 52-45.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 9:41 PM

Anyone know who SEMO is interested in since their coach was there?

-- Posted by TFA on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 9:45 PM

Vashawn Ruffin would be my guess TFA.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 9:51 PM

That would be a good guess. However, Nutt is really good friends with Coach Holifield and watches Sikeston on any free nights he can. He and his team were at the Sikeston vs. Charleston game, also.

Any final score on SCC-Oran game?

-- Posted by catfish_162001 on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 10:03 PM

Oran defeats SCC 92-83.

-- Posted by Larry Doby on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 10:05 PM

Clearwater defeated Doniphan 55-46 to win the OFCT. Congrats to the Fightin' Tigers!

Boy them charleston boys can flat out play!! New Madrid ain't gotta chance...

-- Posted by Realbootheelbasketball on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 10:14 PM

Kennett is a good team. Dexter played a great game tonight. Very proud of our Bearcats. D.J. Dowdy had 21 points and 3 charges tonight. Jordan Miller played well as did Brad Potts. Chandler Young is developing into a great player. Myles Urhahn came in and mixed things up a little. Hold your heads high Bearcats!

-- Posted by CatDad on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 10:18 PM

Evans is a huge part of that team, they will be a force in distrix with him in lineup. Much respect for tigers. And bluedawgz and indians for that matter.

Final score of C-ville / Cairo game ?

-- Posted by bballfan71 on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 10:23 PM

Also, anybody know the final of the PHC/Fredericktown game in the MAAACT tonight?

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 10:27 PM

FYI, SCC has moved up several of their better JV players and they are a better team than they were a month ago. I don't know if they will be able to beat Leopold but it should be a better game than it would have been, IMO

-- Posted by Larry Doby on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 10:29 PM

Congratulations to Risco Jr Jordon Pavy on reaching the 1,000 career point mark tonight against Holcomb.

-- Posted by jpaawhite on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 10:32 PM

Oak Ridge 59

Chaffee 50

Don't know where above score came from. Crazy game, 4 int fouls called and I'm not sure any of them were actually intentinal fouls.

-- Posted by OAKRIDGEBLUJAYS on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 10:34 PM

Well done Oran. Tough to beat a team 3 times during the same season. Even tougher when you play the team 2 times on their home floor.

Oran is a legit contender in their district and beyond.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 10:35 PM

Caruthersville won 89-74

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 10:42 PM

PHC over Fredericktown 53-42. So, as predicted, Farmington and PHC will meet for their rubber match in the MAAACT tomorrow at Mineral Area College. Does anybody know when tip-time is?

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 10:44 PM

Congrats to Gabe Bohnert of Saxony for scoring his much deserved 1,000 point of his career!! Saxony won against meadow heights 53-34 in their homecoming

-- Posted by crusader on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 10:44 PM

Hey Larry: Do you think SCC has ever been beaten 3 times in one season by the same team?

yahyah - Semo is recruiting Ruffin, and Jones even though he's only a Jr. That's why Coach Nutt is at so many of their games.

-- Posted by PatK on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 11:04 PM

Tip time for PHC and Farmington is 8:30 pm

-- Posted by hardwork on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 11:08 PM

Nutt was at the Jackson/Cape game Tuesday with Hollifield

-- Posted by semo501 on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 11:10 PM

I can see SEMO recruiting Ruffin.

J.T. Jones? Can't see it.

-- Posted by birdfan on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 11:16 PM

C'water beats Doniphan 55-46 to win OFC title, avenged the one point lost to Doniphan in last years final. Patterson kept the Dons close, even when C'water pushed the lead to 15, but he had no help and the Tigers played aggressive D and used their quickness to wear down Doniphans' bigs. Good win for Tigers to continue their great season. They are now 19-3 with games left at Van Buren Monday and at Naylor on Tuesday. Congrats Tigers!

-- Posted by tooldogging on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 11:17 PM

In addition to the Bloomfield vs. Gideon game at TRCC tomorrow, Caruthersville plays South Iron at 3 p.m.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 11:17 PM

birdfan - following his potential. Definitely wanting Ruffin, but if they get a feel that Jones could play the perimeter, then he'll get more looks.

semo501 - they are following Cox, King and Reynolds. Don't know how serious on them, but they are tracking them for now.

Lots of schools are going to be recruiting Reynolds pretty soon.

-- Posted by PatK on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 11:31 PM

Clearwater has a real nice season going only losses to South Iron twice and Eminence once!I thought they were in control of doniphan tonight Patterson had 24.

-- Posted by porchswing on Fri, Feb 8, 2013, at 11:55 PM

Blake Reynolds is honestly the best talent in Southeast Missouri as a post player, much better than Cox in my opinion. No doubt Dickie was there to watch him and Karson King.

-- Posted by semobball8 on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 12:38 AM

Glad Semo looking at area talent.

-- Posted by TFA on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 8:07 AM

Semo already has local talent and you see how that's going. They need to get rid of Nutt and get someone else in there he has proven he's not a coach over his career. He has already signed Payne and now if he really is looking at Ruffin and Jones well that answers my question 3 6"1 guys all for pretty much the same postion and that's to go along with White who is already there.

-- Posted by BIGELW on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 8:39 AM

Got to say I agree with you on that one BIGELW. We can either have a local all-star team or we can have a team that actually contends in the OVC. I can think of maybe 10 players over the past few years who would have made any kind of significant impact at SEMO...and at least 3 of them would have been absolutely wasting their talent by playing there.

-- Posted by FarmBoy06 on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 9:15 AM

Dickey Nutt has restored credibility to SEMO's program. What were they like before he got there? Besides, we're all just speculating who he was watching or possibly recruiting.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 9:50 AM

You and the others might be speculating...

-- Posted by PatK on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 10:29 AM

YHC tv announcer said the name of a smaller school that was looking at primer from kennett last night. Not sure for what position but its cool that he might get to play somewhere. He's got good moves around the rim and can handle the ball and shoot outside pretty descent.

-- Posted by ktown 5150 on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 10:33 AM

Think they said Truman state

-- Posted by ktown 5150 on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 10:47 AM

Ok PatK, who are your sources?

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 10:58 AM

I agree Ktown i like primer really skilled has a chance but do u think he needs to be slimmed down some to really increase his game!

-- Posted by porchswing on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 11:01 AM

Anybody know what time gideon and bloomfield play today!

-- Posted by porchswing on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 11:04 AM

Ruffin would be an upgrade over some of the guards that Semo currently has. You can't fault them for recruiting a kid that would be an upgrade over the current players, especially when that kid is a local player.

-- Posted by PatK on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 11:07 AM

I guess it's that time of year seems like a lot of scouts are out at these games right now!

-- Posted by porchswing on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 11:08 AM

I think it's hilarious they'd recruit Karson King but not Kyle Stroder.. Stroder is a much better shooter but King is better inside.. Maybe he wants a more physical 3 man

-- Posted by Thot McGee on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 11:09 AM

I hope Nutt is taking a look at Stroder as well as Doniphan's Brian Patterson and Holcomb's Jamie Massey.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 11:13 AM

I think SEMO should be after Reynolds, Jimerson, and Mitchell and that's it.

-- Posted by Thot McGee on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 11:16 AM

I want to see Patterson play.. does he ever play a game close to a cape/sikeston school?

-- Posted by Thot McGee on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 11:18 AM

Usually not sportsnerd. The BCT is about as close as Doniphan gets to Sikeston.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 11:22 AM

what schools are recruiting him?

-- Posted by Thot McGee on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 11:24 AM

Sportsnerd to really see patterson's skill set you need to see him with some good guards watched him last night again really frustrated had to play point guard again last night.

-- Posted by porchswing on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 11:26 AM

No idea sportsnerd. Anybody else know if anyone is recruiting Patterson? Maybe TRCC?

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 11:30 AM

Yeah he might need to slim down, if that's the case I'm sure they can help him with that. I need too for that matter. Just my opinion but I think Mitchell will be much bigger than SEMO when it's all said and done . Unless he just wants to play close to home

-- Posted by ktown 5150 on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 11:33 AM

Doniphan plays in Charleston on Monday night

-- Posted by birdfan on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 11:34 AM

This is from a very good source his stock has dropped a little because of the season the team is having and the coaching situation hasn't helped! The very close source told me SEMO,TRCC.UMSL,TAKE IT TO THE BANK ON THOSE THREE!

-- Posted by porchswing on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 11:35 AM

To compete at the top of the OVC SEMO must recruit the top players regionally and nationally that get overlooked. Kids like a Ed Daniel or a Tarius Johnson who played in SEMO's backyard last year at 3 rivers, only to go to Eastern Kentucky, I believe.

I have not watched Jackson play this year. So I can't speak about those kids.

Realistically speaking, if they want to consistently be at the top of the OVC they need to recruit kids that are talented, big and athletic. Many of the kids listed here don't meet all 3 of those criteria. Now before everyone blows up at me, I'm not saying they are not good players.

Jimmerson has the skill and quickness to play at the level in 2 years.

I'm not totally sold on Ruffin. He's very good but he's not close to the guards they have now as a hs senior. I'm talking about SEMO's wings. If Ruffin was 6-2 my opinion would be different. Ruffin is not a point guard. He's too small to be a OVC elite 2 guard. Remember, we are talking about taking SEMO to the top of the OVC.

Patterson needs to go the 3 rivers, then he'd possibly be ready for a SEMO. He has skills and 2 years at 3 rivers would propel him. Quickness and speed would need to improve. He could probably make it at SEMO out of high school but would be better prepared after juco.

Stroder and Massey are not Division 1 talents at this time. Good lord please don't take that as a slap in the face. Again, remember. We are talking about taking SEMO to the top of the OVC.

JT Jones could possibly be that guy because of his size and shooting ability. He has a high basketball IQ and with improved wing skills I could see him playing at that level.

Mitchell is a talent. He has great size and could possibly be that type of talent.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 11:37 AM

jwhitlock i may not agree with everything you have said in the last post but i am glad you gave your opinion i agree 3 rivers with bess would not hurt patterson a bit!

-- Posted by porchswing on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 11:46 AM

It's better when we don't all agree. Otherwise semoball would not be as popular.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 11:48 AM

For some reason, SEMO and TRCC don't have a good relationship so most of Coach Bess's talent goes elsewhere. Maybe Coach Nutt can fix that.

Birdfan, thanks for the update. I would've missed that game for my next Key Games thread. Does anybody know if the Caruthersville-Doniphan game will be made up this week too?

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 11:57 AM

I understand other peoples opinion's help keep the mind open!

-- Posted by porchswing on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 11:58 AM

Nick Niemcyck went to SEMO. Not sure I agree with that.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 12:01 PM

Patterson is too slow and not athletic enough to play at Semo. That comes directly from a D2 coach that is recruiting him. I've never seen him play so I have no idea.

I personally don't think Stroder or King is good enough, and I don't mean any disrespect to them, just my opinion.

I think Ruffin could become a point guard, which is what Coach Nutt also thinks I bet. He will need to improve his ball handling, but that's a teachable skill that you can improve on with practice and technique work. He's already good enough to defend point guards, and he can shoot well enough for an OVC point guard, but he'll need to work on ball handling and passing -- and I bet Semo thinks he can improve to become a point guard in time.

-- Posted by PatK on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 12:33 PM

I just don't think we need a point guard that badly.. I'd much rather get Brandon Roberts than Vashawn Ruffin

-- Posted by Thot McGee on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 12:41 PM

PatK of course he would say that if he's competing against SEMO in recruiting Patterson.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 12:48 PM

I agree that Mitchell and Jimerson are prolly the only 2 that have a chance to actually play there and IMO I don't know for sure they can but none of the other guys can. Why wouldnt he use some of those scholarships for some juco guys that have proven they can get it done. IMO he needs to win now because he might not have to many years left if he doesn't.

-- Posted by BIGELW on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 12:50 PM

IMO PatK i have to respectfully disagree you admitt you have never seen patterson play i have seen him put iton very fast very atheltic bigs out of st.louis in some aau games this summer he had a very good point guard with him and they won the tourney!

-- Posted by porchswing on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 12:57 PM

There is no way Massey could play div 1 he couldn't play for sikeston

-- Posted by yaeger on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 1:01 PM

Time will tell yaeger. Massey will definitely be playing somewhere next season IMO.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 1:09 PM

Yaeger I assure you Sikeston would use Massey.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 1:10 PM

This while conversation is pointless. Does everybody really want to see Semo win 5 games next year? C'mon guys, your smarter than that.

-- Posted by Uncle Charlie on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 2:28 PM

What are you talking about Unc?

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 2:29 PM

I agree Charlie. If SEMO wants to be at the top of the OVC the majority of their roster must be comprised of regional or national talent.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 2:43 PM

Thank you for understanding jwhitlock.

-- Posted by Uncle Charlie on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 3:15 PM

South Iron leads the Caruthersville varsity boys 21-13 at the end of the first quarter.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 3:16 PM

Porchswing - I didn't say anything about Patterson, that's what a coach said, not me.

Preacermanfan - I assure you the coach isn't competing against Semo for Patterson.

-- Posted by PatK on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 3:26 PM

South Iron leads Caruthersville 31-26 at halftime.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 3:32 PM

Yep Preach the MAAA championship game starts at 8:30. But gotta say, was proud of my Blackcats last night, kept a lead until the end of the third and ran out of gas it seems halfway in the fourth ending up 10(?) down at the end. Farmington handled SG by about 20 in the first game. Should be a good match up tonight. Probably will be the same teams battling it out for the District 2 crown in a few days.

The girls championship game is at 7:00 with Fredericktown vs PHC. Go at it Lady Cats and bring home a win!

-- Posted by mojo3 on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 3:34 PM

The Gideon varsity boys defeated Bloomfield 58-49.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 3:35 PM

PatK, you said a D2 coach who is recruiting him told you he was too slow for SEMO. That seems to imply he knows they're recruiting him or why mention SEMO? Porchswing seems pretty confident they are recruiting him. I just put your two premises together and drew a logical conclusion.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 3:38 PM

Preach - he said Semo because I asked him. I've never seen Patterson play, so I asked him if he could play at Semo. His answer was he was too slow etc to play at Semo.

And the D2 coach wasn't from UMSL either.

-- Posted by PatK on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 3:42 PM

Patterson isn't ready for SEMO right now. AFter 2 or 3(reshirt?) years at 3 rivers he could very well be ready for SEMO.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 3:49 PM

Good win for Gideon going into districts. Hard to believe Bloomfield lost that game.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 3:49 PM

If he went to 3 rivers that is.

South Iron defeats Caruthersville 71-57.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 4:11 PM

Semo has a player exactly like Patterson in Tolbert and Tolbert was better than him in high school.

-- Posted by BIGELW on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 4:12 PM

I've seen Patterson play four games now, he is a good player, can handle the ball, shoots well, can go inside/out very well, but he is kind of slow. Also, he is very easily frustrated which was highly evident in last nights game with C'water. He was the same way last year too.

-- Posted by tooldogging on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 4:21 PM

Tolbert was no better than Patterson in high school.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 4:28 PM

Gideon is a dangerous team come playoff time.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 5:32 PM

Jackson defeated Poplar Bluff 71-58. The Mules seem to be a sinking ship here at the end of the season. Congrats to Jackson on another big win. They will almost certainly be the #1 seed in their district now.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 6:08 PM

Don't know if I would consider a slightly strained knee as being injury prone. As far as I know he hasn't been hurt before but I get what your saying. I hope all these guys we are talking about have the chance to play somewhere after high school

-- Posted by ktown 5150 on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 8:28 PM

Mitchell from Kennett could play D-1 baseball. Plays third base, has some pop and a very nice arm.

-- Posted by Pete Czeria on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 8:56 PM

Watched the games at TRCC gideon beating bloomfield was a shocker after bloomfield played right with oran! Was not surprised that south iron beat c-ville but was surprised with them beating them on fast breaks repeatedly. And this is got to be one of bess's worst teams!

-- Posted by porchswing on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 10:28 PM

I would say he was better he put up same type numbers but did it against better competion. My point is he's not going to do anything to help Semo.

-- Posted by BIGELW on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 10:51 PM

Dustin was interested in your opinion on those games at trcc is gideon playing that well right now and what about the c-ville game!

-- Posted by porchswing on Sat, Feb 9, 2013, at 10:56 PM

Gideon has a shot. They host the district and have two good guards. Depth could be one of their biggests factors.

Thought on the South Iron-Caruthersville game is one has to wonder how many players on those two teams will be playing at TRCC next year.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Sun, Feb 10, 2013, at 1:01 AM

And the answer may be none. Time will tell.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Sun, Feb 10, 2013, at 1:02 AM

I also think Bloomfield has a shot at making a run in their home gym. I would not have wanted to play Bloomfield in the first round of Class 2, District 1.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Sun, Feb 10, 2013, at 1:17 AM

Bloomfield has wins against Twin Rivers, Puxico and Malden this season. It also played Oran to four points and Bernie to six points.

Teams can be dangerous on their home floor come playoff time.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Sun, Feb 10, 2013, at 1:20 AM

Herd that a baseball scout has already said Mitchell might get drafted out of high school. Person who told me that isn't from kennett but he knows the scout. That being said, just because one scout has that opinion doesn't mean it will happen. I would like to see him playing D-1 BB for four years out of high school but if his best chance is in baseball that will be cool also.

-- Posted by ktown 5150 on Sun, Feb 10, 2013, at 6:31 AM

I think the reason they beat Cville on fast breaks is Cville had a very physical game the night before against Cairo, then had to play South Iron less than 24 hours later. I don't think it would have changed the outcome other than the score being a little closer though.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Sun, Feb 10, 2013, at 8:39 AM

That makes a little sense cheesehead maybe their legs were a little tired because i was surprised that they were fast breaking them that is one thing i did not see coming i thought they would out shoot them having seen both teams a few times.

-- Posted by porchswing on Sun, Feb 10, 2013, at 11:36 AM

Thanks dustin i have not seen gideon in a while seen them early and they were really struggling!

-- Posted by porchswing on Sun, Feb 10, 2013, at 11:38 AM

I've seen Gideon they are absolutely horrible they don't stand a chance at doing anything

-- Posted by yaeger on Sun, Feb 10, 2013, at 12:42 PM

Mitchell should go to TRCC or Mineral Area college first. I still have doubts about his guard playing in college.

-- Posted by jayrod on Sun, Feb 10, 2013, at 2:26 PM

Mitchell is a junior and has another year of high school to develop guard skills. Reminds me a lot of Greg Tucker who getting good minutes as a Frosh at Northern Colorado. Needs to shoot a little better.

-- Posted by tmm224 on Sun, Feb 10, 2013, at 2:41 PM

Certain fans north of kennett on I-55 and I-57 will always have doubts about a player if he's from south of their school and that's ok. He can lead the fast break, handle the ball and dish it to the open player. He also gets several steals and assists per game. 6'4 Jr that might not be finished growing, oh he also leads class 4-A in scoring at 25 ppg. What else does he need to do?

IMO, Mitchel is just as good or even better than Greg Tucker.I know I'll get blasted for saying that but IMO, that's how I see it. There is nothing that kid can't do on the court. You don't see many players that can go to D-1 schools in two sports, and Mitchell is one of them. I have a lot of respect for his game.

You shouldn't get blasted for saying that Cheese. I don't agree that he's as good right now, but Mitchell is just a junior. He might be this time next year comparable to where Tucker was toward the end of his senior year in high school. Once Mitchell learns to consistently keep his emotions in check he could be phenomenal.

Kid's got court awareness/presence. Can i define that? No. But he's got it!!

Cheese those are kind words for mitchell and as a kennett fan I respect those of you for recognizing him. Thats the same respect I have for Monroe and Jimmerson and others. When some kids come through that are special , its good for all of us to give them the praise they earn. One of the positives of the semoball community.

Farmington defeated PHC 61-48 last night to win their 3rd straight MAAA Conference Tournament championship.

I got to see the Cairo game of Cville, but not the South Iron. Cvile played great against Cairo. What I could tell on the radio, just didnt have any fire against South Iron.

New Madrid will be tough! Nice win before District. maybe

Baker for Bernie did have 40 in the game against Malden. Turner had 22.

As far as state championships or final fours go, that takes a team more than one player most of the time. When we play the number one team in the state last year and this year just to get out of the district you can't judge him by that. Tucker was a great player for our area and I think Mitchell is also. Not saying one is better than the other ,both are good. I'm just glad we got another year to watch and see what Mitchell can do. Also hope Monroe gets back for next year. Next question, do you think Mitchell will get ALL STATE this year. I think it would be an easy choice but if kennett doesn't get out of the district, do the voters know enough about him.

Tucker is getting good min. but he's not exactly putting up good numbers 27% FG and 15% from 3 I know he's just a freshman but it just shows how hard it is to compete at the d-1 level. I don't really think no one in this area is d-1 material right now but Mitchell does have another year so if he works on his shooting and ball handling he could get there. Question is does he have time to put in the work necessary over the summer to get to that level with him also playing baseball.

Do you mean that no seniors in this area are D-1 material!?

Big Papi...Kevonte Mitchell have played 2yrs of AAU summer basketball with the Arkansas Wings Elite team from Little Rock so i'm pretty sure that won't stop him from playing baseball he's played both for 2yrs.
