There were two plays that cost Caruthersville the chance for a comeback. With momentum, Monroe put back a shot for a dunk but it got called for offensive goaltending down seven. A few series later, McWilliams got called for a charge driving the lane on a play he could have made. Again, I think they were down seven. If either of these goes, I think the Tigers finish off the comeback. I'm not saying either is a bad call. The Tigers just couldn't catch the breaks and Hayti built a lead and sustained. Also, Caruthersville needs to learn how to shoot a free throw.

WoW!! Talk about your upset special! No excuse about it, Hayti came to play, we didn't! I have been eating a lot of crow on this board this year. I had to eat it with hot sauce tonight though, didn't go down to well plain. Big Congrats to Hayti! Good win! I'll be cheering for you tomorrow night! I will go out on a limb here and say, the Indians will take the BCT..

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Thu, Feb 2, 2012, at 9:43 PM
  • Cheesehead, did Monroe get in foul trouble or just an off night? Also, what happened to Portageville in the 4th qtr? It sounded like a back and forth game until then with Kennett.

For what its worth, we had no bench tonight. All bench players couldn't play. Two of them were involved in an altercation at school, TG is injured so we had our jv as subs. Still no excuse shooting the way we did. You just never know what Cville team will show up. If they play like this in Districts, they will get beat opening round. You can only coach so much, sometimes a player has to want to get better and do things to improve that. Our shooting is just flat out horrible!

Monroe got his 20/10 like usual. I dont know what happen to Cville tonight! Ugly!

Pville tired out in the fourth, lack of depth on the bench. Still played tough though, I give them credit for that.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Thu, Feb 2, 2012, at 9:49 PM
  • Ok, Cheesehead, thanks for the info. Better luck to the Tigers in the future.

Kennett has already beaten Hayti twice pretty handily. I know the Indians are red hot right now, but have they improved enough to beat Kennett?

No one was talking to u sideline....always in something....Im sure cville played hard the better team just won tonight. Thanks cheese for the update on what happen with cville. They are young an will learn whats important as they mature.

Well I wouldn't say the better team won tonight, just the team who played better and came to play. I think Cville looked ahead to tomorrow night! BHC is always tough, you have to come to play every night! And when I said the Indians will win, that meant Kennett also lol. Both teams are Indians so its a win/win prediction lol

If you didn't make a rude and spiteful comment accusing Caruthersville of cheating, I wouldn't have to chime in. I get along with the Caruthersville people so I have their back.

I always said from day one on this site, I support two teams. Caruthersville is my number one team always, but since they lost, Hayti is the only other team I support whole heartily. Nothing against Kennett, I just always have supported both teams. Should be a great night of basketball. Cville still has a chance to take the jv championship so its not a total bummer. Lets go Tigers and lets go Hayti!

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Fri, Feb 3, 2012, at 7:49 AM
  • Cville varsity was missing 5 players in this game and that hurt them bad. As somebody said they had to pull up JV guys just to have a bench for this game. Still Hayti played great and deserved to win.

I guess my question would be, in the BHCT can the same kids be on the jv roster and the varsity roster? I know that the S-MC does not allow that.

I hope Monroe and Johnson get to play in the JV game tonight, it will be fun to watch those two against guys their own age....since they are both 10th graders they should be allowed to play right????!!

-- Posted by wheresthebeef on Fri, Feb 3, 2012, at 2:10 PM
  • They could, but then they would be ineligible to compete in the district tournament due to playing in too many tournaments! :p

I feel for your JV tonight if the players who played last night for us can't play tonight bc they played for Varsity one game. Our two main guards on JV got PT last night on Varsity.

Bottom line for Caruthersville is that they have ZERO depth. We have decent guys who can play but have a hard time staying eligible. Either its grades, attendance, or getting in trouble. Wish these guys would embrace the TEAM concept. So much talent at Cville but it just goes to waste.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Fri, Feb 3, 2012, at 2:26 PM
  • *

I thought a player could get PT in three tournaments a year combined JV and Varsity not including the state tournament. Like some Sikeston players get time in the ND JV tourney, SEMO Conference tourney, and St. Dom tourney. Cheese, have you all been in any tourneys other than Dyersburg and this one? If not, your players MAY be ok to play.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Fri, Feb 3, 2012, at 2:31 PM
  • If I understand the rules correctly, you are allowed to play in a maximum of three tournaments per year in the regular season and then the district tournament. So technically, yes Cville's kids could also play in the JV tournament, but would not be eligible for the district in that case. (Now two tournaments in the same week may be a whole other ball of wax...not sure of the rule on that). In Sikeston's case, the varsity plays in two regular season tournaments. So therefore, the kids that played in the Notre Dame JV tournament can only play in one other tournament for the varsity (either the SEMO Conference Tourney or the St. Dominic), but they couldn't play in both. That is, unless they had no intention of dressing out for the district tournament.

Remember back in '05-'06....Michael Porter played in the ND JV tournament and then played in the SEMO Conference tourney, but he could not compete in the Superman Classic because that would have been his third tournament and would have made him ineligible for the postseason.

Hard to follow, but it all depends on how many tournaments your varsity plays in.

-- Posted by semohoops on Fri, Feb 3, 2012, at 2:38 PM
  • *

Semohoops, Charleston plays in the SEMO Conference tourney, Christmas tourney, and Superman Classic this year. How would they do districts? I really think it is three tourneys not including the district/state tourney. I don't know if there are special rules for two in a week. I know JV/Varsity rules for quarters in a night are still in effect but I think you can play in three tourneys.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Fri, Feb 3, 2012, at 2:45 PM
  • It's confusing. Let me try to be more clear. You are allowed a maximum of three tournaments, that is true. However, Sikeston only plays in two, so therefore Sikeston can't have a kid play in the JV tourney AS WELL AS the two varsity tourneys. Yes, that would only be three tournaments, but Sikeston's VARSITY only plays in two, so two is all the kid would be eligible to play in.

The same rule would apply to schools with three tourneys. A kid couldn't play in the three varsity tourneys and ALSO play in a separate JV tourney.

-- Posted by semohoops on Fri, Feb 3, 2012, at 2:50 PM
  • Cheese the whole team makes good grades. No F's on the entire team. They are also pretty good guys who stay out of trouble. It's just that at Cville "trouble" could mean that your shirt was untucked or something silly like that. It's sad that people are going to talk bad about these guys now like they are criminals because none of these guys have been in trouble all year and from what I heard from one of the players this situation wasn't even a big deal. I do feel sorry for Elbie and Darrell and the guys who did play because they tried hard. The subs who did play also played hard and did their best. It's just like you said you have some JV guys and a few more varsity guys that haven't played a lot this year so that made it really hard. Then Hayti comes out and plays great so Cville takes the loss. Great job Hayti. Tigers hold your head up because you did your best in the middle of a big distraction.

-- Posted by gocvilletigers on Fri, Feb 3, 2012, at 2:53 PM
  • *

It is confusing. I thought it was three total. Varsity, JV, freshman. Doesn't matter. One player gets three tourneys during the regular season. But you could be right too. MSHSAA is complicated.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Fri, Feb 3, 2012, at 2:56 PM
  • The way I understand it, however many your varsity has scheduled, is how many you can play and still be deemed eligible for districts.

-- Posted by semohoops on Fri, Feb 3, 2012, at 3:00 PM
  • *

I wasn't talking about this year. I mean Cville through the years. I know when I was in school, we had so many kids who couldn't play because of grades and staying in trouble. Cville could have fielded some great teams on the court and on the field. I agree with you, some of the rules at the school now are a little crazy but people have to adapt to them. Its just we have had guys not eligible this year until after the break, a guy who couldn't even play this year, and guys missing games left and right this year. Not sure what's causing it but it has affected this team negatively. Just wish things would get worked out with everyone because Caruthersville has the potential to compete for state the next couple years and would hate to see it go to waste. Not saying these guys are criminals by any means but something isn't right.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Fri, Feb 3, 2012, at 3:01 PM
  • It has to do with scheduling. 16 regular season games and 3 tournaments, 18 regular season games and 2 tournaments, or 20 regular season games and 1 tournaments are the options available to max out the basketball schedule. Students may participate in a max of 3 tourneys per year, depending upon the district schedule.

Also, check MSHSAA bylaw 3.21.3 under basketball regulations. Deals with individuals not being allowed to play in 2 basketball tournaments in the same week, except during winter break. Even mentions that it cannot be varsity one day and JV the other day.

  • smo723, the earlier post was a prediction that Gideon would beat North Pem by 18. Check the time on that post and you will see that. But it looks like the Mustangs pulled it out!

  • Well this is a set back for both kennett and cvill. Hayti played two very good games in a row. Our chances of an upset in the district tnmt are looking less likely now. If there was a chance

  • A few surprises. I didn't expect ND to blow out Bernie like that, nor did I expect SCC to handily beat NMCC

  • Good win for SCC and Hayti tonight !

  • While some may call it an upset, Coach Taylor has gotten Hayti playing some really good ball late in the season. They have won 7 in a row. They could be a favorite in their district, especially with it being held in Hayti.

  • I believe Dexter could beat Jackson if they played at the BEC, they lost in their previous meeting by 6 points, Dexter is much improved I was at the Game vs Advance and Lee and Miller took over the game.

  • Tri-County Tournament seeding all come down to the Holcomb and North Pem game now ! If North Pem pulls out what I would call an upset then we have a 3 way tie for 1st . If Holcomb wins then seeds should go as follows

    1. Holcomb

    2. Risco

    3. North Pemiscot

    4. Gideon

    5. Clarkton

    6. Campbell

    7. Southland

    8. Delta C-7

    9. Cooter

  • Hayti has a lot of talent and in my opinion they are playing their best ball because Taylor is finally playing his best players. They Hayti senior class has always been a strong group so early in the year they were starting all those seniors. The problem is their best point guard is a junior and they best scorer/rebounder is a sophomore. So now they they have shuffled that lineup to put 23 in there as point guard and 35 in there as another post player they are playing excellent basketball. Hayti has about 8-9 good, athletic kids and their size is just incredible. Now that they kind of have that rotation figured out I expect them to make it to state in Class 2. They played great this week.

  • Bootheelhooper, who is the Hayti sophomore you mentioned?

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Sat, Feb 4, 2012, at 11:43 AM
  • It will be interesting to see Hayti play a team who wants to keep the game in the half-court, and force them to execute. They struggled badly with this in the 2 games against Holcomb earlier in the year.

Holcomb already beat them twice this year, the first game by 7 and the second game by 6. Kennett also beat them twice this year, the first game by 15 and the second by 9. Caruthersville played them once and beat them by 14. This is a totally different Hayti team. They just beat two really good teams in Kennett and Caruthersville. They played a great half court game in both games against Cville and Kennett. I have a feeling Hayti will just fine against Holcomb this 3rd time around. Like I said, they are really hot right now, playing as a team and they have confidence, that is a very scary thing with this team.

  • hayti was not real interested in playing holcomb or really anybody else for that matter early on. chances are if holcomb plays hayti again that it would be holcomb who struggles with the tempo. its all according to which hayti team shows up.

-- Posted by GSP on Sat, Feb 4, 2012, at 3:27 PM
  • Holcomb has an outstanding point guard in Aaron Reeves who really does a good job of controlling the tempo. I know they have some size, but I still don't think they have anybody who can slow down Massey. But no doubt, the way they are playing right now I wouldn't past anything past Hayti

Is that game over Scott? Pretty sure Coach may have just tweeted during the game. Very unorthodox.

@sideline: looks like maybe he got T'ed up last game. Or Teched up (Binacki reference). Earlier tweets make it sound that way.

Yeah. I just noticed that Larry. That's what my selective reading when Twitter scrolling does to me. Hah.

  • Anyone know who won Cape/Festus game today?

-- Posted by The Fan on Sat, Feb 4, 2012, at 7:54 PM
  • Cape Central 62, Festus 30

    -- Posted by country-dude on Sat, Feb 4, 2012, at 11:03 PM
  • Thanks, country-dude. Kind of a surprise lopsided score since Festus beat Perryville last night. I guess that's why they play the games.
