  • impressive

-- Posted by Thot McGee on Mon, Dec 12, 2011, at 8:22 PM
  • Beating ste. Gen is not impressive... Removing them from your schedule would be impressive... District opponent or not, it's a waste of time... As I said earlier Sikeston had practice today & tues vs Perryville... Cupcake city, I bet class 1 SCC can beat those two class 4 gutter teams... I betcha neither of these two schools have never even won their districts before... practice makes perfect!!

Name one team in any sport in the entire nation with no cupcakes on their schedule.

  • So I guess Sikeston playing St. Gen. would be like Charleston playing Kelly?

    -- Posted by mandm96 on Mon, Dec 12, 2011, at 8:52 PM
  • Good analogy MM!

-- Posted by rocketsbro on Mon, Dec 12, 2011, at 9:09 PM
  • Mamba said he went to Arkansas State from 1993 to 1996 to play football, so he knows what it's like to be a whipping boy.

NMCC 7th grade beats Jackson to remain undefeated.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Dec 12, 2011, at 9:32 PM
  • Ste gen, Perryville, Bernie, valley view are cupcakes... Yea Kelly is too, I know our girls play them not sure about our boys... If they do I'm sure that's all we have, teams in superman classic won't be easy or the Perryville shootout... Heck we always play a tough opponent in that shootout: we've played vashon in 04, Memphis east in 05, Borgia in 06, red bud in 07, Webster groves in 08, I mean for class 3 team we dnt duck any class...

-- Posted by BLACK MAMBA24 on Mon, Dec 12, 2011, at 9:34 PM
  • Good for you Mamba! Now put it to use and write some coherent posts on here.

Charleston boys play Kelly. Why else would mandm bring that up?

    -- Posted by yah-yah on Mon, Dec 12, 2011, at 9:39 PM
  • Yes, February 7th at Kelly. Of course, they do have to play Kelly at Kelly. That should even things up a bit...

-- Posted by rocketsbro on Mon, Dec 12, 2011, at 9:42 PM
  • You know playing cupcake city when your playing Ste.Gen & P'ville one night after another... Lmao I mean really who does that? Then know u guys sit back & say "Dogs got back on track" listen guys honestly, I know SCC could easily beat those 2... That's all I'm saying... It's practice...

-- Posted by BLACK MAMBA24 on Mon, Dec 12, 2011, at 10:51 PM

Oh, so playing Meadow Heights followed directly by the winner of Chaffee and Scott City isn't cupcake city? That's your 1st 2 rounds of your Christmas Tournament All I'm saying is...it's practice... Nice try, though.

Buck, I was told by a reliable source that NMCC's 7th grade lost to PB earlier in the season and are therefore, not undefeated. I think that's their only loss. But, PB has a pretty salty group of 7th graders also.

    -- Posted by yah-yah on Tue, Dec 13, 2011, at 8:10 AM
  • *

You are correct yah-yah, NMCC's 7th grade lost to Poplar Bluff early in the season. BuckMajor, both NMCC groups swept Jackson last night.

-- Posted by Sweet Chuck on Tue, Dec 13, 2011, at 8:21 AM
  • Yah yah your point is so weak... I'm speaking about regular season games, you know games that are scheduled, not a tournament!!!! To be honest, St.Dominic tournament is not loaded, please let's be real... Plus we are in the Superman Classic again so, again we seek competition & if we lose we lose but we will challenge our boys... That's why we play in Riverbend & Perryville Shootout & Superman Classic I mean this is not cupcake city... excuse me!!

Glad to see them shooting better and not fouling as much. Belton will get to play in the Xmas Tourney later this month. Cville will be getting deeper

Well it was against South Pem.. I see where we are shooting better though. We have cut down all those foolish fouls to. When Belton gets to play, we will have a scorer and a defender.. He is a great player. Cville will get to have a week or so of straight practice to work on the small things. I see good things for this team

  • kennett beat hayti69-54.

    -- Posted by mule1993 on Tue, Dec 13, 2011, at 9:32 PM
  • Kennett played, well, lets say sloppy. Hayti has a pretty good half court trap, and they forced several turnovers with the full court pressure at the end of the game. Consistency will be a problem all year for kennett. Not that Hayti is not a good team, and they are and very well coached but their depth is just not there. A good team would have took kennett to whipping shed tonight.

    -- Posted by Rocket689 on Fri, Dec 16, 2011, at 8:08 AM
  • Also, hoops.....looks like Sikeston will have to change the banners and t-shirts and anything associated with the state title last year. Looks as if we were only 20-0....according to Buck! You know...we had 3 tourney wins in the St.Dom tournament and 7 tourney wins in the state tournament (3 district, 1 sect, 1 qtr, and 2 at the Final Four). Oh well, 30-0 sounded much better.....but alas...it is no longer! All because one NM fan had to go checking on "things!"

    -- Posted by Rocket689 on Fri, Dec 16, 2011, at 8:13 AM
  • Oops! Actually, it's even worse....I forgot about the conference tourney! No longer 20-0! It is now 17-0! Man, 30-0 sounds MUCH better!

    -- Posted by Rocket689 on Fri, Dec 16, 2011, at 8:14 AM
  • BuckMajor--I understand you are proud of NMCC's JH program and from the way you talk, you should be. But.............undefeated is undefeated. A loss in a tourn. would NOT be finishing the year "undefeated" in anyone's book. Undefeated regular season games=yes. Undefeated for THE season=no. Congrats to NMCC though, future looks promising.

-- Posted by KevinDuBrow on Fri, Dec 16, 2011, at 8:18 AM
  • Yeah, that doesn't quite have the same kind of ring to it does it Rocket? I'm going back trying to figure out how many undefeated junior high teams we have had over the years after disregarding tournament games.

Sikeston played right into ND's hands. They settled on the outside and forces up shots. Very little looking to the inside. ND would do what they do best, capitalize on the fastbreaks and score a bunch of points off turnovers. Someone on Sikeston has to start getting physical in the paint offensively. The past two games, they've played against teams with more size and decent skill and just looked flat. Giving credit to ND, Meystedt played out of his mind tonight and did everything right. The kid has lots of game. Props to them. If this team doesn't work on their inside game, it won't matter how good their shooters are because they will be figured out quick.

  • @Farmboy: I will not respond to your personal attacks but what I will say is that YES I do resent the fact that Notre Dame is allowed to play by a different set of rules than the public schools. They are allowed to recruit from all over the region and they do so routinely. I even had a member of the Notre Dame faculty CONFIRM that there is indeed a tuition slush fund IF you are a good athlete. I have watched or listened to many SCC/Charleston/Sikeston vs. Notre Dame games and they are certainly called differently if the games are played in Cape. Notre Dame fans are arrogant, rude and downright prejudiced.

  • Chaffee doesn't have a scori g threat on their team besides Crowe.. therefore I don't see a consolation run like last season. Tenkhoff or someone has to become an outside scoring threat. we don't don't a post player that you can have post and throw it in to them.. they need the guards to penetrate and drawl their defender and pass for a lay in or get offensive boards and put back.. that's our post scoring thus far..

  • NDalum86: I am immature because I see the situation for what it is? There is no way on a neutral court that Notre Dame beats Sikeston. Notre Dame couldn't even get past New Madrid County Central the other night. Perhaps my "booster money lining the pockets of the refs" was a bit over the top, but you cannot sit there and tell me that Notre Dame has not benefited from home cooking on their home court over the years. As far as fans go, I have sat in the stands and heard all the ugliness directed at players on the opposing teams----coming from ADULT Notre Dame alumni. Don't worry about saying a prayer for me, say one for them.

@Rachel Why is it so hard for the newspaper and others to acknowledge that Notre Dame IS allowed to play by a different set of rules that public schools? When Coach Heeb was at Bell City and moved to SCC, he was crucified with recruiting allegations that probably never really happened. The Missourian was all over THAT story.

It doesn't really break my heart that Notre Dame crushed our biggest rival, one just has to wonder exactly how it happened. I have yet to see a box score with the fouls and/or turnovers listed. If anything, it makes the Notre Dame/Charleston match up on Tuesday night all the more intriguing. I had debated on going, but NOW I wouldn't miss that game for anything. I am sure Notre Dame believes that they already have this game in their back pocket.

    -- Posted by bluejay_fan_natic20 on Sat, Dec 17, 2011, at 5:15 AM

Sikeston just has to work on the inside game both on offense and defense. They have very good guards but they do not utilize their forwards nearly as well as they should. Also, the offense needs some more practice. They will be fine. The break will give them a chance to put the needed work in and get this team up to snuff. Anyone who thinks "Sikeston isn't that good" just wants to bash them while they have an opportunity to. Losses happen to teams. ND played better last night because Sikeston let them dictate the tempo and play their type of game, as I stated last night. The team will be fine though.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Sat, Dec 17, 2011, at 1:34 PM
  • If Sikeston is going to play better they have to get the ball inside for layups instead of settling for 3's which they don't shoot that well. JT is a good player. There is no reason they shouldn't get the ball to him more

It was a tough game.ND played Sikeston couldnt hit.I still question this zone defense.Every coach knows that H is not changing his zone.He needs to stop living on last years win and change the defense.New Madrid played man im sure C town will play man.Come on H this zone is killing you. Times change u have to change your style to get with modern times.Maybe in the past u played zone to protect slow players from getting beat off the dribble. You dont have that problem GET OUT THE ZONE.I dont care anymore who says what U look at ND last night they got up 6 an stalled.S-town looked crazy running from side to side wearing your shooters legs out.GET with it.U are not 10 deep this year JONES an JAMISON are playing seemingly the best right now.RUFFIN seems to be in a slump.IM sorry but besides JONES the post men cant even catch the ball.Terrible hands. So S town is goin to be in a dog fight each and every night unless there are some adjustments made in this 1980's zone defense.COME ON MAN.The players got to develop a winning attitude.Yesterday is done u work hard an get better.I know some idiot will be on here talkin bout the coaching staff know what they are doing.I say its more to coaching than saying forget what people say im staying with this.At least try U might be surprised in the outcome.

That's exactly what NMCC did Tuesday. They were playing zone for the first three quarters, and we're losing by 14 going into the fourth. They switched to man for the fourth quarter, because the zone was failing. Needless to say our guards took over, got steals, and one of our guards out scored their entire team in the 4th, and we won the game. Sometimes adjustments have to be made.

GSP its obvious u r either the coach, his wife, his son, father n law, daddy, are something..If u cant take the blinders off and see the two games they loss came with the stall tactic after being up a few points then u are just plain ignorant.Check this smartie read ND coachs comment. He said what we cant run with Sikeston so we had to slow the pace down and have them play our game.Check this he did just that. The pace slowed down the ball went from corner to corner and our guys did what stayed in the freakin zone an looked like kids at the sports complex playing in the field runninh all over the place accomplishing NOTHING.If he wants to embarrass himself because he so arrogant in thinkin zone wins,Think again. If the SHS fans are yellin get out the zone.1000 people cant be wrong. REALLY come.Id rather be smart and try a change than look DUMB sticking to the same routine.SHS is to predictable when it comes to other opponents making a game plan against them. They know what SHS will play. They need to give the guys a chance at winning.SHS is not 10 deep no way no how.If u have a kid like Jamison playing all but 1 minute of a game an he is vomiting from exhaustion your not 10 deep if u Jones plays all but 3 minutes u are not 10 deep.I never claimed to have a cure for cancer but I have a cure for the stall game. PLAY MAN TO MAN.I was coached by the best no i wasnt the high scorer but I played my role rebounds and defense my put backs got me jus as many points as any other.I had to work but thats what u do.My coach always put us in a postion to win by making the neccesary adjustments. TEN 4 OVER AND OUT.

Im sure sideline but can we reason for a second.U tell me why we are stuck in zone.Mabe you can help me understand.Thats all im saying. Its doesnt say that coaches are always right. If they were then we wouldnt have them getting fired all across the board.Sometimes differant players need a differant aspect.Im not suckin on a lemon.I will take the SHS team of 2000 I believe. The same losing team a year before FRED J came.FRED came with a differant approach these guys went to state. The year may be wrong just making a point. The prior coach did the same thing year in year out and it just wasnt working am I right.RIGHT. Are u take Mcferren in New Madrid same losing team before he came and what he change the plan to defense first and they won state.Everybosy gets all mad when u make a point and ask a question.Thats all im saying. So if sideline r GSP can help me then please do instead of getting an attitude with me.I say if u had 10 like last year where everybody came in fresh and could hold a entire game of non stop press then sure.We dont have that this year thats all im saying.C town an ND blew right thru the press because by the time u get to the 3rd quarter SHS is tired and not as pure as the first 21 quarters.Just my observation.

  • Do you think the Bulldogs have a chance to win the state title this season?

Is Thayer really the favorite in Class 2. I still like the winner of the Class 2 district at Hayti to return to state.

  • Sikeston fans.......stay positive. This team is good and still has a chance to make a run....despite what you hear from other Sikeston "fans." The coaching staff has the situation in hand. They will get the kinks ironed out. I have personally witnessed this team's abilities and resolve.....this year's team. Don't lose heart! We are 7-2!!!! We lost to two good teams. When we get those "revenge" games and we take care of business, the opinions will change. Even if they don't, no matter. Let me assure you....the coaching staff will not make changes to the team's strategy based on some "expert" on semoball. Go Dogs!

Changing the defensive scheme isn't going to be the difference in these games. While the team is not ten deep this year, they still know how to wear teams out. The problem in the last two games (and in general) has been either the inability or refusal to work the ball towards the men inside. Jones gets a lot of credit now. Imagine if the team actually worked towards the inside more. Doesn't matter how good of shooters we have if we can't get them open and one of the main ways to do that is work more in-and-out plays as well as to let the opponent know that our inside guys are just as much a threat to score. The offense spends more time standing around watching than it needs to and everyone is trying to score but are not working as a unit, more as five individuals. Fixing these problems over the break will go a lot further towards getting this team improved than trying to overhaul the defense. The gameplan the coaches have implemented led them to a state title last year. While this isn't the same personnel, the system they are in has PROVEN to work with them running it. In no way am I against playing some man defense every now and again, but you make it seem like that would have been the difference in the game, and I guarantee it would not have been. Working the ball inside, drawing some fouls, getting physical, not being afraid of turnovers, and working off of each other. Those are what will make the difference. After the first quarter, the fouls were 6-2 in favor of ND. After the third, it was something like 7-1 ND. This was because they got it to their guys inside or were able to get in position off a turnover inside, and were able to get a layup or draw a foul. Meanwhile, some think it is a foul disparity that can be attributed to the refs but these same numbers have come up in almost every game. It is because of what I described earlier. Other teams are able to establish themselves inside and make things happen while Sikeston hasn't been able to. One thing that helped Sikeston last year was the physicality they displayed on both offense and defense with guys like Corey and Janeil. If this team can start to do that with guys like Keldon and JT, they will be fine. I think the improvement will come over the break. You just have to be patient and trust in what the coaching staff is doing. The team will be set over the next few weeks.

  • Please keep in mind it is extremely difficult to have the Top Class 4 team in the state every season.

It's much easier to dominate over a decade at a Class 1 or Class 2 program.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Sun, Dec 18, 2011, at 12:32 AM
  • Sikeston is not a man to man team. Plain and simple. They are undersized every single night out on the court. They have some quickness, but some guys that aren't quick on outside. Who are they going to guard? When they play teams such as Cape Central or any decent Class 4 or 5 team with 6'5" guys and taller, who will guard them man to man? Come on people, Sikeston will be fine. They just need a little time to work out the kinks. They are 7-2 for Pete's sake. It's not like they are 2-7. Typical for some people to hit the panic button after two losses. That's probably why you aren't coaching. We heard these same things the last few years when Sikeston was playing zone when they were losing to Borgia 50-41 and people went crazy, "why are they playing zone??!?".....umm, we held them to 50 points! 20 or 30 under their average. The problem wasn't defense. It was offense! Bottom line is Sikeston needs better offense to win. ND scored 62 points on Friday in a win, compared to 63 in a loss to Sikeston.

  • Dustin-I have to disagree with the notion its easier to be great for a decade in the smaller schools. I dont think its easy in ANY class. I think it depends on the players you got, and more often then not the larger schools will have more talent(Please don't post about thats because they have more to choose from-that's a give-me). But occasionally some small schools have more talent in their starting 5 then some 5A schools have on their entire team(See last years SEMO Christmas tournament final) . Also it depends on the players, but more importantly the coach since the players are only there for four years(and thats if your playing varsity as a freshman). It seems the word tradition gets used when legacy would be more appropriate. For instance TRADITIONALLY Danny Farmer/Ron Cookson has/had their Charleston/SCC boys ready by February. Otto Porter/Tyler Hansbrough left behind a legacy at their respective schools.

BTW I mean no disrespect in this post Dustin. You do a great job. I just feel the boys get alot of credit(and I know they deserve it) but the coach (just like in any sport), gets all the blame when a "W" wasnt in the cards.

Thanks side like I said befOre its a question. It wasnt like i said play man the whole game. All i ask is why the adjustment couldnt be made when a team changes the pace of the game with stalling.I agree the ball needs to go in to JT more on the other hand Keldon has butter fingers he hasnt caught a pass and held on to it that ive seen.He is more of a rebound put back man.A view is just that a view. There are coaches who take job openings.Doesnt mean they are coaches.Nothing against SHS coachs.LOOK at SHS girls they have a complete turn around since they have a COACH compared to the coach last year who was jus there for the job openeing.Like any team when you are hot you are hot when you struggle you struggle and work on fixing the problem.ONCE again thanks sideline

  • Well I think Oran and Chaffee should be ahead of both Oak Ridge and Delta at this point especially since Oak Ridge doesn't have Light for the tournamemt. Oran has more threats than any of the threats listed. Kinda hard to not say they're not a 9 seed. I don't think Chaffee would be doing as well as Oran if they had Oran's schedule so far.

  • chaffee's record wouldn't be as good but I'm not sure they wouldve lost by 40 twice.. don't get me wrong I think Moore and ressel combined are more on offense than Chaffee has but I think Chaffee is better.. but no coach is going to vote Oran 9 in a Christmas tournament with that record.. there's no argument.. like in football.. Houston was ranked up as high as 9th.. and a team like Georgia wasn't but who's really better.

-- Posted by Thot McGee on Sun, Dec 18, 2011, at 11:11 AM
  • If Oran wouldn't save their 3 best J.V. players for strictly our J.V. who is undefeated they would have more depth off the bench but I agree Chaffee has more depth than Oran right now. Coach Shoemaker is trying to keep them together. Next year with them 3, Moore, Ressel, and Heuring it should be a good year for us. I look for each team to meet up in the Xmas tournament on day 3. Should be a pretty good game,

  • First of all Ill like to start off by stating that I'm so happy that there is such knowledgeable basketball people on here. Especially you stlfan I can't believe Mizzou didn't hire you instead of Frank Haith with all of those AAU National Championships. In all honesty Sikestons problems are not what they are doing as much as how they are doing it. The team is not playing with any heart or tenacity right now and bottom line to be a pressing and trapping team you have to have both of those. They had it last year and thats why they were great. Thats why the Scott Central and Charleston teams of old were so great, yes i realize that Ctown played man but they still played with such incredible tenacity that it didn't matter one way or another. Sikeston will be fine they have lost ten games in four years doing what they are doing so lets not throw it under the bus yet. And on my last note Buckmajor that is the stupidest comment ever that NMCC played in the same environment that Sikeston played in the other night. ND could care less about that game they probably didn't even have a student section there tuesday night where as friday every student and their mother from ND was there friday. Not knocking NMCC but Stown vs ND is a rivalry that everyone from both sides gets fired up for.

Thanks NORM your retired and your star is on the city hall doorsteps.I agree Sikeston has to get hungry and a fire has to start burning in their butts.Winning doesnt come easy.So maybe they will get the molassess out their butts and get it together.Maybe they will get tired of being talked about and go out every night like they have something to prove.Mizzou coach was my asst for 4 years he learned so much from me.LMBO.

  • I agree with what sideline said, I've noticed it also. They need to play more team ball as a unit not an individual game. That's what made last years team so good . This years team will learn and get it together I'm sure. So what if we lose a few, it happens.

Dustin, in the past six years, there have been only six teams to make the state finals, Borgia (4), Sikeston (2), Kearney (2), ND (2), St. Charles West (1), Ruskin (1). Sikeston has been a top five team in Class 4 each of those years essentially (third in '06, top five in '07, top three in '08, second in '09, third in '10, and first in '11). And Borgia has been just as good. I'd say it is perfectly conceivable to be tops in Class 4 or 5 every year if you have the right program.

Norm, I think there have been much more stupid comments made on here than my comment. 2nd, you said they PROBABLY didn't have a student section, well sir you weren't there, and you don't know for sure. Glad your an expert based off of speculation. 3rd, I was referring to the comments made about how it's hard to win at ND, cause refs favor ND, and that ND boosters pay the refs. Those comments are no longer on here, they have since been deleted. Wasn't even talking about the fans. So get your facts straight before you call me out, and then we will actually be able to have debates about the game.

Me too catfish. I'm glad to see them making improvements, and I think they will also be better after christmas. They have a good freshman class, that are slowly getting varsity playing time. stlfan38....Coach Schonhoff is doing an AMAZING job with the girls. My question is this....what defense is he running???? Hmmm....yep....2-3 zone. Next question....why???? Hmmmm....because the team is undersized. Catch the recurring theme? Kinda sounds like the boys team. Why didn't you say he needed to play man when they lost to Dexter???

Because I wasnt at the game HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM Rocket.I call it how I see it. I was at the C game and at the ND game Check it.Say what you will U dont matter neither does your observation.I will say this till the crow crokes.U have to adjust your game.U sit here like im saying run man a whole game.NOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT but if the circumstances provide that u may have to change a a little then do so.Its not a size thing as i pointed out earlier.SHS had size with PORTER an BEIRD etc they ran zone so that BS about size is a phantum of your imagination. You act like somebody broke in your house stole your Chritmas presents whining like a little elf because I have an opinion about Man D.I dont care if its 1-3-1 do something differant for a change.Im sure any team that has SHS on their schedule says oh no adjustments they only play one DARN defense 2-3.

    -- Posted by stlfan38 on Sun, Dec 18, 2011, at 5:46 PM
  • No whining here. It's just hilarious to hear the "experts" say what the coach should do after losses and less than a year removed from a state title.

Don't change your story now! You said the Dogs need to run some man. Now it's 1-3-1?? Which is it?

By the way...with the team you mentioned, they ran man as well. Just sayin.....

After listening to a few games on radio and reading the articles I see it like this. In the loss to Charleston, Sikeston shot 4-17 from behind the arc and the loss to ND shot 5-27 from behind the arc. If they pass the ball in to the post a little more, take more high percentage shots, they could have won them games. If they shoot better and make better decisions on offense then they'd be 9-0. Zone worked last year so I don't think it's that big of a problem this year. Sure, they may need to switch to man a few times in a game but I don't think it's that big a deal. I think after that Ctown game, their confidence is shaken a little and need to build it back up. They will work it out im sure. No need to panic if your a Sikeston fan

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Sun, Dec 18, 2011, at 6:49 PM
  • They were actually 9-44 in those 2 games that's horrible that's the only reason they lost but that's what happens when you don't have an inside game they are not going to make shots every game.

-- Posted by BIGELW on Sun, Dec 18, 2011, at 7:46 PM
  • Dustin- I do not think your class 1 and 2 theory is correct. If you stay in the modern 4 and 5 class system only SCC and Portageville have more than 5 wins. Vashon has the second most wins (11) and Charleston(10) has the third most. Desmet has as many wins as Portageville and they are the largest school in Mo.

My theory on why small schools can dominate for a period of time is coaching. In a large school the odds of having a D1 player is much greater, just from the number of available players. Even if your not the best coach and have one or two D1 players on the team, the team will be pretty descent.

SCC was good while Cookson was the coach, but did not do much until he came back. Still not sure about Wright, it's not hard to have a good class 1 team with a top 50 D1 player on it.

  • Believe it or not, Sikeston does have other zone defenses that they have had in their arsenal the past few years. It's still early, they are working out the kinks and have not perfected a few things just yet. Give it time. For the record, since Sikeston has become strictly a "zone team" on defense, they have a record of 104-14. Lets give the coaches a little credit. I have a feeling that they know a little more about their team and their personnel than the people posting on this message board. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe the AAU championship coaches on here know more. If that's the case then I wish they would apply for the job and see if we can improve on 104-14 the past four years.
