I'm sure Sikeston and Charleston will be the best in the area. Caruthersville is looking to be really good this year also. I can't wait to see the new gym they built.

What's SCC going to have? I know they lost Otto but don't they have a decent team returning? They should at least be a good class 1 team.
-- Posted by Fatboy1972 on Mon, Jul 18, 2011, at 5:36 AM
SCC will be a very good class 1 team, the thing this year is they won't be unbeatable even by some of the 1A schools.
-- Posted by deervalley on Mon, Jul 18, 2011, at 8:21 AM
Would you guys consider charleston the pre season favorite to win the christmas tournament? That's kind of what I'm thinking at least.
-- Posted by BB-BORE on Mon, Jul 18, 2011, at 11:32 AM
I'd say that Charleston is the clear preseason favorite for the Christmas tourney. It is after that where questions begin. I think you would put Cape Central second and SCC third though that is just speculation. On a similar note, does Sikeston or Charleston get the one seed in the SEMO Conference tournament? I'd put Sikeston since they're coming off an underrated season and are reigning champs but a case could be made for either.
-- Posted by sideline starter on Mon, Jul 18, 2011, at 11:47 AM
Notre Dame will be better than Central and SCC...Sikeston fans are ignorant..Im from Sikeston and yes Sikeston will be really good but Charleston will be better and ND is returning 4 starters and are going to run all over a team like central..just my thoughts..Central has one good player and is weak at gaurd..Centrals gaurds wouldnt even get playing time at a school like sikeston ND or Charleston...I say for the Christmas tourney Notre Dame is easily the number 2 team..SCC isnt going to be good..i dont understand where people are getting that from
-- Posted by superbub on Mon, Jul 18, 2011, at 1:26 PM
I'm sure you are a Sikeston fan, big baller. That's what we Sikeston fans do...say all of us are "ignorant." Give me a break...
-- Posted by Rocket689 on Mon, Jul 18, 2011, at 1:42 PM
Rocket, some of the ND students are having trouble realizing they have a middle of the pack team this season. If anything, the more they talk, the more hilarious their season will be. If they want to think they are still better than everybody even without their all-state leader who was always double and triple teamed to leave their guards wide open, so be it.
-- Posted by sideline starter on Mon, Jul 18, 2011, at 1:56 PM
He might be from sikeston, but he goes to ND obviously.. And cool point about that guards, but whose going to rebound over tisdell? And don't say well sikestons small, because we are about 50 times as athletic team wise
-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Mon, Jul 18, 2011, at 1:56 PM
I agree, sideline.....I agree. I'm pretty sure baller is an ND fan.
Gadget..as you well know...Sikeston was a 30-0 STATE CHAMP team with "undersized" personnel. The program can't measure heart or conditioning. Athleticism is a HUGE part! Besides, Sikeston will be the same 10 deep team again that will just wear teams down....
-- Posted by Rocket689 on Mon, Jul 18, 2011, at 4:28 PM
The teams i think will be good is Charleston Sikeston & SCC they might be losing OTTO , but they have younger kids coming in . SCC have Dominique Porter & Lamaarcus Steward coming back. Plus kis from jv. Now Sikeston will be very good this year . I think another state win for them in the future . Now for Charleston they will be good they have most of their players coming back such as Ryan Parham , Greg Tucker , Jamaul Gray, Aaron Cassel , Krushon Scott, & some excellent younger players coming in . & I also think Charleston will go this yr & next yr. Because the boys that will play nxt yr. When they was in middle school they went undefted both years. So I'm looking at charleston going two years in a row.. Bascially what I'm saying is Boothell Talent is taking it all this year. Bluejays,Bulldogs,&Braves . Big B's !
-- Posted by BlueJay Fan on Mon, Jul 18, 2011, at 4:40 PM
People expect SCC to be great but they will only have Dominique and Lemarcus back. I don't think they will be able to compete with Charelston or Kennett or even ND. They'll be a good class 1 team but I don't see them taking it all again.
-- Posted by dont worry on Mon, Jul 18, 2011, at 4:59 PM
Caruthersville could beat Charleston if their guard play keeps getting better because nobody not even Charleston has an answer for Monroe inside. That kid is a beast and has really got better. Taylor is bigger and stronger too. Caruthersville is really athletic and deep. I'd give the edge in that matchup to Charleston just because of Tucker and Parham and those two are just so good. Not knocking the rest of the Blue Jays but I think Caruthersville can line up man for man with anybody. Sikeston is going to be very good but it will be interesting to see how they replace those 4 seniors. All 4 played a key role and were very unselfish players. Sikeston won't be 10-11 deep this year, more like 8-9 deep. That is plenty of bodies to keep running as long as they play as unselfish as last years team did. I agree with whoever said SCC is not going to be very good. They didn't just lose Porter they lost about 10 seniors on that team. You've got to remember that 4 of those kids started their junior and senior year. They have a bunch of kids who have never played varsity. So if they aren't that good it won't be a shock to me. I think Kennett will also suffer from this. They lost a couple real good players but more importantly they lost a ton of seniors who all played two years of varsity. There are only two kids who return with any varsity experience at all and they were role players. I do think Kennett will win 15 or so games this year because they play Senath and South Pem and some other weaker teams. But this will be a rebuilding year for them. Look for them to be really good again in a couple years but this year will be a step back. Overall I think there will be a lot of average teams in the area that beat each other up. In my opinion the two with real playoff hopes are Sikeston and Charleston. I'd put Caruthersville in there but they are in the same district as Charleston and the Blue Jays are just a little bit better.

Thanks for the props boothellhooper! I agree with you , but i still think scc will be good.

Terry Jamison
Kilron Coleman
Eldridge Gipson
Keldon warfield
Caleb McGee
Vashawn Ruffin
Chord sushi
Tyler Anderson if he plays
Connie landers if he plays he's like 6 6 and pretty good
Markieth bratcher
Reese porter
Jt jones
All could probably be varsity and play for most teams in the semo

Big baller, you guys said that last year. As for gaurd play, no we don't have great gaurds. But the only time they might struggle wil be against teams like charleston and sikeston. We do have 1 gaurd, not sure if he's going to play yet, but he willonly be a junior and is extremely skilled and can be 1 of the better gaurds in the area. Got some playing time at point down in New madrid Kony's senior year when they were good.

I really like Charleston's chances of advancing at least to the state final four and perhaps winning the state title.
-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Tue, Jul 19, 2011, at 2:31 AM
In the above discussions, it sounds like all the teams have talent. Probably what will make the difference is the mind set of the players. Someone mentioned how unselfish last years Sikeston team was. That alone probably means more than most people think. Otto seemed to be unselfish last year. A great player knows how to make the other four better.
-- Posted by deervalley on Tue, Jul 19, 2011, at 8:43 AM
If any Class 1 team around here lost a couple of great athletes that were 6'2 and 6'4 and they also lost a really quick point guard they would be in trouble. Well that is what SCC lost with the two Johnson kids and Calvin Porter. That is a ton to lose right there by itself. Now you throw in the fact they lost a 6'9 All American once in a lifetime type of player along with that and how can people honestly say they will still be good? Hey they play a tough schedule and I'm sure their young kids have talent. They will get better but they will have to rebuild a little this year.
-- Posted by bootheelhooper on Tue, Jul 19, 2011, at 9:07 AM
ND won't even be close to Sikeston and Charleston in my opinion. They lose Tolbert and don't have a whole lot coming up from JV that I'm aware of.
SCC will still be good enough to compete for a Class 1 state title, although it won't be as easy as the past couple years.
-- Posted by FarmBoy06 on Tue, Jul 19, 2011, at 10:14 AM
I don't see any class 1 from around here knocking off SCC. Class 2 is Bernie's to lose. Charleston will be good in class 3 and sounds like Sikeston should have no problem in class 4. On a side note since we're all dying to know, Notre Dame might possibly break double digits this year in the win column. Just my thoughts.
-- Posted by Uncle Charlie on Tue, Jul 19, 2011, at 10:30 AM
I'm just sayin don't over look Risco this year in class one.

I wouldn't go crowning anyone champion yet. The season is still a few months away and things can change from now til then.
-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Tue, Jul 19, 2011, at 12:32 PM
SCC will be competitive for sure, and if you don't think so you must not know about basketball, yes they lost Otto and the johnsons, but they still have lamarcus and the younger porter, and they won every game by a blow out, which I'd say they'll make a run for sure

I had heard the 6'10" kid from Richland is moving somewhere else. Has anyone haeard about that?
-- Posted by deervalley on Tue, Jul 19, 2011, at 1:31 PM
I heard he was considering Sikeston for a chance to play in the larger class to get noticed... I think he should come to Cape and we would be unstoppable!
The other thing about this kid from Richland is he could move to Sikeston and play for either Sikeston or SCC! Kids who live in Sikeston play for SCC all the time!
-- Posted by HoopsFan59 on Tue, Jul 19, 2011, at 2:44 PM
Ok, my sources haven't registered anything on this. Who is this kid? How good is he? And wouldn't he have to sit a year if he transferred pretty much anywhere but ND maybe?
-- Posted by sideline starter on Tue, Jul 19, 2011, at 2:49 PM
I believe his name is Richard Forshee and he can make a difference but has a hard time getting up and down the floor for to long due to size.
-- Posted by BBfanatic on Tue, Jul 19, 2011, at 3:29 PM
It's like the old saying:
Just because they make them tall doesn't mean they can play ball.
I have a feeling this is just a crazy rumor. Kid would get more exposure at Richland.
-- Posted by I.P. Freely on Tue, Jul 19, 2011, at 3:42 PM
Cirithungol, my phone has both in it's dictionary and because of alphabetical order gaurd comes up before guard and when I'm typing something longer i don't think about correcting it.
Is this kid from richland the same one who was being discussed during last season?
-- Posted by BB-BORE on Tue, Jul 19, 2011, at 5:09 PM
SemoSports, I think you are thinking of Ryan Kleffer. He got a lot of positive buzz last season.
-- Posted by sideline starter on Tue, Jul 19, 2011, at 5:16 PM
He couldnt transfer and be able to play at ND unless he actually moved into another school district..i think thats the rule at least
-- Posted by superbub on Tue, Jul 19, 2011, at 7:18 PM
The kid everybody is talking about was a 6'9 freshman two years ago who was very uncoordinated. Last year he grew a little and is 6'10 now and is a much better player. If anybody remembers Skylar from Bell City this kid is pretty similar. He is big slow and has a hard time running but he does a pretty good job scoring when he does get the ball around the goal. Didn't he move to Richland because his mother was a teacher and got a job there? Prior to Richland he was at Malden.

What about perryville? 8 returning seniors to a 19 win team that lost 1 former senior
-- Posted by baseball_bum on Thu, Jul 21, 2011, at 12:24 AM
baseball_bum
I think there are several people that think that Perryville could be a dark horse this year. Unfortunately, they play in Sikeston's district. I think they could very well be in a district final matchup against Sikeston. Good luck to them....just not against the Dogs! LOL!
-- Posted by Rocket689 on Thu, Jul 21, 2011, at 8:13 AM
No offense to kid from Richland but he could not play in Sikeston system. They are small and quick, he couldn't get up and down the floor at Bloomfield tournament, he for sure can't run the fieldhouse. Ask Cape Tigers?
-- Posted by tlks2much on Thu, Jul 21, 2011, at 10:45 AM
I think if you have a 6'10" kid that can score around the basket, you figure out how to use him. Bell City did a good job with the Blacklear (sp?) kid a few years ago.
-- Posted by deadred on Thu, Jul 21, 2011, at 11:12 AM
To draw an analogy from baseball... coaches are slow to give up on a left-handed pitcher (at least he's "left-handed" every night), the same holds true for a 6-10 player ----- he might be a bit slow, etc. but at least he's "6-10" every night, and can still cause problems inside!
-- Posted by semo7178 on Thu, Jul 21, 2011, at 4:51 PM
Well take a 6 10 sophomore anyday, he wouldn't start, but a fresh 6 10 guy coming off the bench against a winded defense is going to hold his own, unless he runs like a 10.5 forty time
-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Thu, Jul 21, 2011, at 8:24 PM
Here was his averages last year, 10th grade,:
ppg 13.28, rebounds 8.44, blocks 4.28, and assists 1.88. He had a 30 pt game against Zalma, seven double-doubles and a triple double. He is now 6ft 10.75 inches tall. And he is one heck of a student.
-- Posted by catfish_162001 on Thu, Jul 21, 2011, at 10:16 PM
Im guessing he's kinda like Borgia's big man
-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Fri, Jul 22, 2011, at 12:07 AM
Is there a early Christmas Tour. meeting this time of year where they make pre season picks?
-- Posted by deervalley on Fri, Jul 22, 2011, at 8:20 AM
With those numbers he must be getting up and down the court well enough! But then again they must have fed him the ball lie every possession for that 30 point game.
-- Posted by BB-BORE on Fri, Jul 22, 2011, at 11:07 AM
He is a little like Will Bogan who played for Bell City, he can play when he wants to.
-- Posted by deervalley on Fri, Jul 22, 2011, at 12:50 PM
Why don't all of you come watch him? He is playing in Dexter today and tomorrow, for Richland.

Pb girls should be pretty good again this year, don't know if it's true or not but heard they have a girl that moved here that is a senior and is around 6'3 or so. Like i said don't know that for a fact just what i heard.
-- Posted by BIGELW on Mon, Jul 25, 2011, at 2:33 PM
Well i think charleston girls will be good also. & Sikeston & Scott City!
-- Posted by BlueJay Fan on Mon, Jul 25, 2011, at 3:12 PM
The sikeston girls should be a contender this year, they've put in a lot of time this summer and the coaches are doing a great job rebuilding this program, I'm sure they want to try to show up the boys team..
I've seen where sikeston is playin Arkansas state champ Clarksville this season, that will be a good test, I've heard about some tournament of champions in Arkansas too, could anyone shed any light? I'd like us to get into that Borgia tournament
-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Thu, Jul 28, 2011, at 1:43 PM
Gadget,
I understand that we are playing the Clarksville team as well. We are playing in the St. Dominic tournament again as well as playing Maplewood in the Tiger Shootout in Cape. Our schedule will be somewhat tougher than last year. It will be very exciting once again in Bulldog land.
-- Posted by Rocket689 on Thu, Jul 28, 2011, at 1:58 PM
I think the team from Puxico is a team to watch. I believe they are a 1A team. They should match up good against Risco. They looked real good at the Dexter shootout. They lost to Farmington by 4 and Notre Dame by 6 or 8 points. They caught my eye when they beat Neelyville like 84 to 34 in a summer game. I actually made a point to watch them play Van Buren and they beat them 75 to 30 something. Somebody told me they beat Scott City as well. They actually get the ball up the court faster than any team around including Risco. They press the entire game with pressure. I don't know much about them or their coach, but I do know they get after it. One of the parents told me that they were 25 wins and 9 losses for the summer.
-- Posted by iluvbasketball on Thu, Jul 28, 2011, at 3:55 PM
Did anybody else see Puxico play this summer? I may have seen them on a good day. lol They for sure give everything they got for that coach. It not the same old Puxico team as in the past. Thats for sure.
-- Posted by iluvbasketball on Thu, Jul 28, 2011, at 3:58 PM
Scott City beat them by 25. It was something like 66-41. And Notre Dame beat them by 30. It was something like 55-25. I watched almost all the games at the Shootout and these two games were blow outs. They did play Farmington tough. Ended up losing by 10.
-- Posted by Golden_One on Thu, Jul 28, 2011, at 4:17 PM
they are also class 2.
-- Posted by BBfanatic on Thu, Jul 28, 2011, at 4:52 PM
Your scores are way off. I watch those two games. My kid plays for ND. Trust me.
Did you see them play Van Buren and Neelyville? What did you think about their team in those two games?
-- Posted by iluvbasketball on Thu, Jul 28, 2011, at 7:52 PM
No they aren't way off. I watched both games and those were the scores. I dont know about the all the other games that puxico played but I watched both of these games and the scores were almost identical to what I previously posted. Puxico played the first game on Friday on the middle court at 9 against SC and got beat badly. They played later on the court to the far left as you entered the gym and ND beat them badly also. They then played Farmington on Saturday on the middle court and they lost by 10 or so. Close game but that ended up being the result.
-- Posted by Golden_One on Thu, Jul 28, 2011, at 10:07 PM
I'm pretty sure you're not an ND parent. An ND parent would probably have been seen on here before at some point discussing ND. You sure you're not a Puxico student? But more importantly, there were rumblings of Puxico being good last season that fizzled into nothing. I really don't see that changing this season.
-- Posted by sideline starter on Thu, Jul 28, 2011, at 10:22 PM
Sideline starter, I couldn't agree more. Why would a ND parent be so defensive of Puxico?
-- Posted by Golden_One on Thu, Jul 28, 2011, at 11:33 PM
To the sikeston fans, in the few past years maplewood has been very athletic with 1 or 2 really good players but they would turn the ball over like crazy. If it's the same this year than you will have no problem with them.
-- Posted by BB-BORE on Fri, Jul 29, 2011, at 10:49 AM
That's a good game for us, there's only a couple teams we usually play a year that are as athletic as us, well need that if we run into a team like soldan or imagine prep
-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Fri, Jul 29, 2011, at 11:22 AM
Yeah, Maplewood is just a quality team with a classy coach. If we could play them every year, I would be all for it. Coach Frazier grew up on bootheel ball and runs that style of program so it should be a great matchup.
-- Posted by sideline starter on Fri, Jul 29, 2011, at 12:14 PM
Back to the boys discussion, the 6'10 kid from Richland in all honesty looked like he was best for throwing the ball in on an inbounds play. He didn't get up the court on three straight possessions once. I saw him play earlier in the summer and after the second game he simply couldn't take it anymore and sat out for 2 games. I'm not bashing the kid, when he touches the ball in a good spot in the post he has a nice soft touch, the problem is he can only get that touch about 6-7 times per game. Also, any thoughts on Jackson this year? I heard they will be giving sophomores a significant amount of play time.
-- Posted by Master of Disguise on Sat, Jul 30, 2011, at 4:52 PM
Jackson won't be anything special this year. Cape is the only team in Class 5 in this area that could make some noise.
-- Posted by sideline starter on Sat, Jul 30, 2011, at 6:10 PM
The 6ft 10in kid from Richland has been trying to play on a bad foot for most of the summer. For a while he was in a boot, he has slowly increased his playing time and yes he had to sit out for some games....this is summer and it is not worth risking permanent damage.
-- Posted by catfish_162001 on Sat, Jul 30, 2011, at 6:59 PM
The Richland kid can not be stop when he gets the ball at the low blocks. He has a nice shot at that distance. The only problem, he not there much. He seems to play at the elbows and on the perimeter a lot. When he is not taken the ball our on inbound plays, he is normally standing out by the perimeter. Base on some conversations at the shootout, he has not been well coached while at Richland. Last year, Richland had a shooting guard that could light it up and didn't pass much to the big guy and the coach allowed it. If he went to Bernie, the kid would be so much better. He can't run the floor, but I can't see anybody turning him down. I wonder if he is Catholic. Lol He would look good in ND Blue.
-- Posted by iluvbasketball on Sat, Jul 30, 2011, at 9:34 PM
Okay , back to this Scc younger plyers that will help them next year are Larandis Banks , Jaylen Porter , The Johnson Twins , Chris Brown . I've seen these kids play before and they are really good. So Scc should be good again . They wont beat as many teams and run through teams like that , but they'll be good. CHARLESTON will be GREAT . Lol & Sikeston Also
-- Posted by BlueJay Fan on Sun, Jul 31, 2011, at 1:05 PM
scc lost alot of the younger kids also
-- Posted by kmasters on Mon, Aug 1, 2011, at 1:45 PM
SCC lost a ton of seniors, not sure how their younger guys play, Will they pursue a tough schedule this year?
-- Posted by catfish_162001 on Mon, Aug 1, 2011, at 5:01 PM
What young players did SCC lose? Did somebody move? I think they do have some younger players coming through their program but they don't have any size. That is going to hurt them.
-- Posted by bootheelhooper on Tue, Aug 2, 2011, at 6:58 AM
Richard Forshee is the real deal. It's too bad he plays on an inferior team. They will win some in Class 1. He will be a dominant defensive player in the post for Coach Bess in a few years. He will play major D-1 college basketball after Three Rivers. He moves well for his size when healthy. He is tough, has great heart, and serves other people well. He is a humble young man and does the right thing! I do not coach him nor ever have, or ever will.
-- Posted by coachinhoops on Wed, Aug 3, 2011, at 3:38 PM
Coachinhoops-I agree. He does need to improve his speed and movement laterally and his explosiveness. If he can improve in those areas I could easily see him playing some good basketball at the next level.
-- Posted by GSP on Wed, Aug 3, 2011, at 4:03 PM
I agree that Richard is a great kid and does work hard. And although you can't teach 6'10 he does not have the skill or the fitness level to play at the D1 level but if he stays healthy some smaller colleges will take a chance with him and I hope so. Most of the time D1 programs look at athletes that have senior type numbers as a underclassman or playes at a high level class 4 or 5 school with a winning program. Just as an example Richland has had athletes in the past play at three rivers but they had winning records and performed at a high level at a young age. This past year they had the same type of athlete there and he did not go D1. It's a little hard to do than most understand.

Cape is going to be weaker but should still have a good team. Tisdell will be the star player for sure.. he did great last year and im sure will have a lot of pressure on his shoulders this year.
-- Posted by CTalum on Sun, Aug 7, 2011, at 2:40 AM
I think Jackson will be in the top 4 teams in the SEMO Conference.
-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Sun, Aug 7, 2011, at 8:07 AM
richards skill level is very good and can get even better. he would be very effective at any high school in the area. fitness and mobility will improve with work and age. hes much more mobile than skyler blacklear was as a senior. ill say this. if zach house can play at semo anything is possible.
What do you think the teams will look like this year? Give me opinions .
